U.S. president-elect Donald Trump says he told Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky during a Christmas Day visit that he should run for prime minister of Canada. “I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Great One’ as he is known in ice-hockey circles,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform Wednesday afternoon. “I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for prime minister of Canada, soon to be known as the governor of Canada — you would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’ He had no interest,” Trump wrote. His comment about being governor of Canada refers to Trump repeatedly suggesting the country become a U.S. state, which Ottawa insists is a joke. Trump added that it would be “fun to watch” if Canadians launched a movement to get the retired hockey player to seek office. The Canadian Press has tried to contact Gretzky through his agents. Experts have said that Ottawa is rightfully focused on the prospect of damaging tariffs under the looming Trump presidency instead of pushing back on rhetoric about annexing or purchasing Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau leads a minority government that could be toppled by a confidence vote next year, following the surprise resignation of finance minister Chrystia Freeland. Trump also expressed Christmas greetings to Trudeau, again referring to him as a governor and claiming that Canadians would see a tax cut of more than 60 per cent if the country became an American state. “Their businesses would immediately double in size, and they would be militarily protected like no other country anywhere in the world,” Trump wrote in a post that also alluded to his desire to annex Greenland and the Panama Canal. Gretzky has previously backed Conservative politicians, such as former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown during his run for the party leadership. During the 2015 federal election, Conservative leader Stephen Harper interviewed Gretzky in front of hundreds of supporters as the Tories unsuccessfully sought re-election. At the event, Gretzky told Harper he thought he had been an “unreal prime minister” who had been “wonderful to the whole country.” Gretzky later said he always follows a prime minister’s request, regardless of political stripe, noting he had once hosted a lunch for former Liberal prime minister Pierre Trudeau.Think tank stresses private sector role in energy transition

Are you looking for a new fintech name to add to your portfolio? It's certainly an area worth a look. The convergence of these two distinct sectors (finance and technology) is creating some incredible growth opportunities. In fact, it has arguably made for too many options. Take Nu Holdings ( NU -0.34% ) and SoFi Technologies ( SOFI -1.30% ) . Both are great online banks, leading their respective markets. But some investors may only have room for one or the other. The question is, which one? Comparing and contracting Nu Holdings with SoFi Technologies You've likely heard of SoFi. A company launched in 2011 as a platform to help college graduates manage their student loans has since become much more. It's truly a full-blown chartered bank with all the expected offerings -- checking accounts, lending of all types, credit cards, investment services, and even insurance. As of the end of September, it was serving nearly 9.4 million customers, extending a four-year growth streak of uninterrupted quarterly customer growth. Its annual revenue on the order of $2.5 billion produces yearly net income in the ballpark of $200 million. That's fantastic for a young bank without any physical branches. Yes, SoFi is truly a 100% online-only banking option . Nu Holdings is a similar company but with a few important differences. Its Nubank business serves more than 110 million customers, for instance, and is on pace to turn roughly $4 billion worth of revenue into income of $2 billion despite offering fewer services; clearly, those it does have are higher-margin offerings. So why have you heard so little about Nu (presuming you've heard of it at all)? Because it doesn't operate in the United States. It only operates in Brazil, Mexico, and Columbia, where the online banking business itself is quickly growing, and where competition isn't quite as robust ... at least, not yet. It's coming, though. Market research outfit Technavio believes that the banking-as-a-service industry -- aka, online banking -- is poised to grow in Latin America at an annualized pace of 19.5% through 2028. As a market leader, Nu is well positioned to capture at least its fair share of this growth. And the winner is... It's a tough decision to make between these two fintech names. Nu Holdings clearly enjoys better growth prospects by virtue of its bigger addressable and largely underserved market. Latin America is home to 665 million people. However, each Latin American country regulates banking businesses differently, which will add to the complexity as Nu expands its footprint. There's also no denying that several South American countries are experiencing political unrest, which adds to the uncertainty of Nu's foreseeable future. On the other hand, SoFi's growth prospects might not be quite as compelling, but at least it has a somewhat predictable growth path that's easy to keep tabs on from where you (probably) sit. So, if you can only invest in one of these names, SoFi Technologies would probably be the better bet for most investors. That said, if you already have a stake in Nu Holdings, you're hardly doomed. The stock just comes with greater risks to match its potential higher rewards. The online bank's actual growth potential is a bit clouded due to South America's backdrop of uncertainty. That's in contrast with SoFi's future -- it might feature slower growth, but it should also be more predictable, and enjoy a much longer growth runway. The numbers: SoFi's 9.4 million U.S. customers are only a fraction of the country's population of 336 million, the majority of which have or will need banking services of some sort. As a greater share of the adult population becomes digitally native -- in other words, people who have only known a world in which using computers and mobile phones is the norm -- online banking will become more popular while brick-and-mortar banking will become decreasingly important. A recent report from Straits Research forecast that North America's digital banking market will grow at an average yearly pace of 12.7% through 2032. Domestic investors will be able to closely follow SoFi's progress in capitalizing on this opportunity. And it's off to a great start. Analysts expect this year's top-line growth of more than 24% to be followed by revenue growth of 17% in 2025. While its percentage growth rates will likely continue to slow down, its absolute whole-dollar growth may not even start showing signs of decelerating until the 2030s. Different enough If you've just got your heart set on investing in Nu Holdings, that's OK. Again, its shareholders are far from being on a collision course with disaster. Do take a step back and consider how Nu Holdings fits into your portfolio's bigger picture, though. It's seemingly more of a growth stock that happens to be in fintech. You can find similar growth potential in a variety of sectors and industries. That's in contrast with SoFi Technologies, which is arguably more of a focused fintech stock that happens to be in a fast-growing sliver of the financial sector. There are fewer ways to expose your portfolio to that particular industry with this particular risk-versus-reward scenario. Of course, although you don't want to own more stocks than you can effectively manage and monitor, there's a case to be made for owning both Nu and SoFi since both are compelling. You might just want to scale back each position from your normal stake size if that's the route you want to go.Online Therapy Services Market , 42% of Growth to Originate from North America, TechnavioTrade, trains and technology driving China-Europe connections forward

This release was published on openPR.DALLAS — According to a Dallas Police Department report obtained and reviewed by WFAA, tens of thousands of dollars worth of items were stolen from Dak Prescott's fiancé Thursday. The report says Sarah Ramos arrived at a Pilates class Thursday morning, and that she "quickly rushed inside due to the rain." "Due to the haste," the report continues, she "forgot to lock her [vehicle] door." When she returned and entered her vehicle after the class, the report says, several pieces of property had been taken. At this time, the report says, she "was notified that her credit cards were being used at [another] location." The report detailed several pieces of property stolen that amounts to close to $40,000 in estimated worth, including designer handbags and wallets from Chanel, YSL, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Prada, as well as computer software and cash. The incident occurred the day after Christmas. The theft follows a string of burglaries targeting high-profile athletes like Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Luka Dončić . Security expert Doug Deaton said thieves targeting these athletes are professional thieves. "They will often follow [athlete's] family members from stores, from the supermarket, from the mall, follow [the athletes] from the games, follow [them] to and from your work," he explained. "The biggest thing that I would advise [athletes and their families] to do is to assume they are being observed by professionals because they are." Dallas Police Department sources confirmed to WFAA Sunday that Dončić's home was broken into Friday through his back master bedroom, that they rummaged through the bedroom and bathroom, then got away with a necklace worth $4,000 dollars, three earrings worth $14,000 and four rings worth $,5,000. The Dallas Police Department is investigating both cases.Indian stock market: 7 key things that changed for market over weekend - Gift Nifty, Asian markets to US treasury yields
Were you a better-than-average golfer in 2024? This new data will tell youWhat We Know About Luigi Mangione: Suspected CEO Shooter Charged With First-Degree MurderThe government is working to make contact with a number of Australians in Vanuatu in the wake of a devastating earthquake that struck the Pacific nation. The death toll from Tuesday’s mammoth 7.3 magnitude quake has risen to 14, with hundreds of people injured and the main hospital in Port Vila “struggling to cope”. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it’s aware of “a number” of Australians in the region. A number of buildings have been flattened, with a desperate search-and-rescue operation underway to free people trapped beneath rubble. Vital water, power and communications links have been severed, hampering efforts, while the international airport is closed and all flights in and out of Vanuatu cancelled. A number of buildings have sustained significant damage. Picture: AFP A desperate search-and-rescue mission is unfolding. Picture: AFP A landslide at the international shipping terminal in Port Vila has suspended operations. Picture: AP International aid organisations fear the death toll will rise in coming days. Michael Thompson, who runs a business in the capital, described the “chaotic” aftermath as rescuers desperately search for survivors among the destruction. “We understand there are eight people trapped inside and the guys are trying to move slowly to get in,” Mr Thompson told ABC News. “It’s not a good scene.” Later, in a post shared to Facebook, Mr Thompson said three people were pulled from collapsed buildings overnight and rushed to hospital. Hundreds of people have been injured and Clement Chipokolo from World Vision Vanuatu told ABC Radio show The World that the number of causalities has been overwhelming. “There’s quite significant damage that has occurred. We observed as we drove around a number of building that were flattened completely,” Mr Chipokolo said. “We imagine that there are still some people that are under those buildings.” Local authorities have categorised the quake as a “mass casualty event”. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the government has deployed urgent aid to Vanuatu. Picture: Jacquelin Magnay Basic aid, including clean drinking water, are urgently needed, and vital communications and electricity infrastructure has been impacted, hampering rescue co-ordination efforts. Vanuatu’s government has declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew from 6pm to 6am for the next seven days. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia is deploying immediate emergency assistance, including urban search-and-rescue teams and medical personnel. “We are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to provide further assistance to the people of Vanuatu as the extent of damage becomes clear,” Senator Wong said. “Australia and Vanuatu share a deep and enduring partnership. We are family and we will always be there in times of need.” A building that’s home to several diplomatic missions, including the United States, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, has been damaged. New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said two of its local staff are unaccounted for. The US Embassy in Port Vilal has been significantly damaged. Picture: Michael Thompson Vanuatu comprises some 80 islands and has a population of about 320,000 and sits within the so-called ‘Ring of Fire’ seismic zone. “Port Vila, with a population of around 50,000, is the closest major urban area to the epicentre and likely experienced the strongest impacts,” Professor Behzad Fatahi, a civil and earthquake engineering expert at the University of Technology Sydney, said. The epicentre of the quake was about 30 kilometres from the capital city. It registered at a depth of 57 kilometres. “It is expected that this very strong ground motion near Port Vila has caused cracks in masonry walls, foundation instability, and tilting of vulnerable structures, especially in areas with soft soil,” Professor Fatahi said. “Secondary hazards, such as soil liquefaction and landslides, are also concerns, particularly in coastal cliffs and hilly areas west of Port Vila, where ground instability could worsen with aftershocks.” The inside of a building damaged is seen in Port Vila following a powerful earthquake. Picture: Tim Cutler via AP A look inside a damaged business in Port Vila. Picture: Tim Cutler via Getty The magnitude of the earthquake is comparable to the eruption of Mount Saint Helens in 1980, Associate Professor Fabio Capitanio from Monash University’s School of Earth Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University said. “The damage associated to such high energy earthquakes is expectedly large, although this area has a record of low seismic damage,” Dr Capitanio said. The United Nations has reported access to the international airport in Port Vila has been “severely limited due to road damage”. And foreign correspondent Dan McGarry told Associated Press that part of the airport’s runway is also damaged. Retail sales rose 0.7% in November, the Commerce Department said Tuesday, a solid increase and higher than October’s 0.5% gain. The boost in spending underscores that the economy is still growing at a healthy pace even with higher interest rates, a trend that could cause the Federal Reserve to lower borrowing costs more slowly next year than they have previously signaled. Tuesday’s report arrives just a day before the Fed is set to announce its latest rate decision Wednesday. Americans end 2024 with grim economic outlook, but Republicans are optimistic for 2025: AP-NORC poll WASHINGTON (AP) — A new poll finds that Democrats are feeling more pessimistic about the U.S. economy after Donald Trump's victory. Republicans, meanwhile, are still dour about the current state of the economy but hopeful that growth will be stronger next year when Trump returns to the White House as president. The latest survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research suggests that some Americans are evaluating the economy more by who holds political power than on what the underlying trends suggest. This was a persistent challenge for President Joe Biden and raises the possibility that Trump might also struggle to translate his economic ideas into political wins. Energy chief Granholm warns against 'unfettered exports' of liquefied natural gas WASHINGTON (AP) — Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm says the incoming Trump administration should proceed cautiously as it considers proposals for new natural gas export terminals. Granholm warns that “unfettered exports” of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, could raise wholesale domestic prices by more than 30% and increase planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions. Granholm’s statement Tuesday came as the Energy Department released a long-awaited study on the environmental and economic impacts of natural gas exports, which have grown exponentially in the past decade. The analysis found that U.S. LNG shipments drive up domestic prices and could lead to higher global carbon emissions. Biden calls for ban on congressional stock trading WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has endorsed a ban on congressional stock trading in an interview that’s being released this week. It's the first time he's publicly backed the idea. He made the comments to Faiz Shakir, a political adviser for Sen. Bernie Sanders. Shakir interviewed the Democratic president for A More Perfect Union, a pro-labor advocacy and journalism organization. The Associated Press reviewed a video of the interview before its release. A bipartisan proposal to ban trading by members of Congress and their families has dozens of sponsors, but it has not received a vote. What does Big Tech hope to gain from warming up to Trump? NEW YORK (AP) — In a string of visits, dinners, calls, monetary pledges and social media overtures, big tech chiefs have joined a parade of business and world leaders in trying to improve their standing with President-elect Donald Trump before he takes office in January. The tech list includes Apple’s Tim Cook, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos. Meanwhile, the list of what the executives may be hoping for includes an open path toward developing artificial intelligence, easier access to energy for data centers and an easing of antitrust enforcement. Trump sues Des Moines Register, pollster for 'election interference' after inaccurate poll President-elect Donald Trump is accusing the Des Moines Register newspaper and its pollster of “brazen election interference” for publishing a poll the weekend before the election that showed Democrat Kamala Harris was leading by three percentage points in the midwestern state. Pollster J. Ann Selzer's survey was considered a real surprise at the time — and Trump wound up winning Iowa by more than 13 points. The Register called the lawsuit meritless and said it stands by its reporting. It continues a campaign against the media by the president-elect, who this past weekend won a settlement in a defamation lawsuit against ABC. Federal Reserve is likely to slow its rate cuts with inflation pressures still elevated WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans hoping for lower borrowing costs for homes, credit cards and cars may be disappointed after this week’s Federal Reserve meeting. The Fed’s policymakers are likely to signal fewer interest rate cuts next year than were previously expected. The officials are set to reduce their benchmark rate, which affects many consumer and business loans, by a quarter-point to about 4.3% when their meeting ends Wednesday. The problem is that while inflation has dropped far below its peak of 9.1% in mid-2022, it remains stubbornly above the Fed’s 2% target. Why is tech giant SoftBank investing over $100 billion in the US? BANGKOK (AP) — Japanese tycoon Masayoshi Son has joined President-elect Donald Trump in announcing plans by technology and telecoms giant SoftBank Group to invest $100 billion in projects in the United States. Trump said the investments would create 100,000 jobs over four years, twice what Son promised when he pledged $50 billion in U.S. investments in 2016. Son is known for making bold choices, sometimes paying big and sometimes not. SoftBank has investments in dozens of Silicon Valley startups, big companies like semiconductor maker Arm and Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. The stock market rally and craze for AI has boosted the value of its assets, but some question if its investments will create that many jobs. Business owners should not forget anti-money laundering rule currently in legal limbo Small business owners should not forget about a rule that requires them to register with an agency called the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, or FinCEN, by Jan. 1. The registration is part of the Corporate Transparency Act passed in 2021. Registering isn’t difficult, but if a small business owner is unaware of the requirement, they could be slapped with penalties of up to $10,000. For now, the rule is in legal limbo. On Dec. 3 a federal court in Texas issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting enforcement of the rule. Stellantis pledges invest $2.1 million in Italian production in 2025 during talks with government MILAN (AP) — The Stellantis automaker has pledged to invest 2 billion euros or $2.1 billion in Italian production next year and spend another 6 billion euros or $6.3 billion in the supply chain. The head of European operations for the world's fifth-largest carmaker made the pledge during a meeting with Italian ministers, regional officials and unions following the forced resignation of former CEO Carlos Tavares earlier this month. The Italian government was seeking reassurances of Stellantis' commitment to Italy.

Kendrick Lamar surprises with new album 'GNX' LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kendrick Lamar gave music listeners an early holiday present with a new album. The Grammy winner released his sixth studio album “GNX” on Friday. The 12-track project is the rapper’s first release since 2022’s “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.” Lamar’s new album comes just months after his rap battle with Drake. The rap megastar will headline February's Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans. The 37-year-old has experienced massive success since his debut album “good kid, m.A.A.d city” in 2012. Since then, he’s accumulated 17 Grammy wins and became the first non-classical, non-jazz musician to win a Pulitzer Prize. NBA memo to players urges increased vigilance regarding home security following break-ins MIAMI (AP) — The NBA is urging its players to take additional precautions to secure their homes following reports of recent high-profile burglaries of dwellings owned by Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis and Kansas City Chiefs teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. In a memo sent to team officials, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, the NBA revealed that the FBI has connected some burglaries to “transnational South American Theft Groups” that are “reportedly well-organized, sophisticated rings that incorporate advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices.” Ancient meets modern as a new subway in Greece showcases archaeological treasures THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, is opening a new subway system, blending ancient archaeological treasures with modern transit technology like driverless trains and platform screen doors. The project, which began in 2003, uncovered over 300,000 artifacts, including a Roman-era thoroughfare and Byzantine relics, many of which are now displayed in its 13 stations. Despite delays caused by preserving these findings, the inaugural line has been completed, with a second line set to open next year. Conor McGregor must pay $250K to woman who says he raped her, civil jury rules LONDON (AP) — A civil jury in Ireland has awarded more than $250,000 to a woman who says she was raped by mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor in a Dublin hotel penthouse after a night of heavy partying. The jury on Friday awarded Nikita Hand in her lawsuit that claimed McGregor “brutally raped and battered” her in 2018. The same is true with identity, and digital public infrastructure more generally. Foundational identity is the bedrock of any legal or digital ID system, as it serves as the basis on which such systems are built to enable the provision of public services. The World Bank’s Identification for Development (ID4D) initiative foundational identity as a system established principally “to manage identity information for the general population and provide credentials that serve as proof of identity for a wide variety of public and private sector transactions and services.” ID4D goes further to mention that common examples of foundational IDs include civil registries, universal resident or national ID systems, and population registers, depending on the context. In other words, foundational identity has been described by many as a major enabler of “platformification” – a new coinage in the digital transformation lexicon which denotes using digital technology to transform traditional business models into platform-based ecosystems through interconnected services for operational efficiency. In many African countries, foundational ID systems such as civil registries are the basis for legal and digital identification systems which are built as “general purpose” systems, to support the establishment of different components of DPI to facilitate access to a litany of services from government and the private sector. To obtain a national ID card in countries like Cameroon, Burkina Faso, South Africa or Tanzania, one needs to provide a birth certificate as a foundational ID document, which is what attests to the legal recognition and existence of that individual from the time of their birth. Sébastien Gueremy, VP Identification & Verification Solutions at discusses this in detail in an published by in September of 2023. In his write-up, Gueremy makes the case for having solid foundational identity systems, highlighting that they are crucial in establishing legal and digital identity which is critical in enabling citizens enjoy their fundamental rights such as having easy access to healthcare, education, enjoying the right to vote in elections or participation in other democratic processes, as well as the right to legal protection. While it is true that foundational identity systems are crucial in digital transformation efforts of countries, establishing them and ensuring their optimum performance still poses a significant challenge. This is reflected in a World Bank survey in 2021 and 2022 which examined the ownership of government-issued identity documents in 36 African countries. It noted that in many of the countries, over 70 percent of the population did not have access to a government-issued identity document and one of the reasons, as seen , was the lack of foundational identity documents like birth certificates. The United Nations estimates that about 850 million people around the world still do not have a legal identity, and therefore are cut out from enjoying some of the fundamental rights they normally should enjoy. That is why it is recommended that for countries to effectively handle situations like this and make legal ID more accessible for their citizens, major efforts must be deployed to put in place the right conditions for building foundational identity systems which can go a long way in closing the yawning digital identity gap in the world. So, in order to build robust, inclusive and effective foundational identity systems which can be used for general purpose service delivery, there are a number of things countries can do. These include putting in place workable policies and legal frameworks, setting up national population registers if need be and digitizing civil registration systems, making such systems interoperable and integrable with other existing systems, harmonizing siloed identity databases, deploying the right technology such as biometric or other AI-powered solutions, laying emphasis on data privacy and security and having guardrails in place, and if possible preparing the groundwork for integration with international identity systems. From the forgoing, it goes without saying that the impact of foundational identity on the advancement of the legal identity agenda cannot be undermined. It is a major step toward enabling countries attain their Sustainable Development Goals. | | | | | | |
