TikTok's no stranger to controversial weight-loss trends, from the carnivore diet to the recent craze around "oatzempic ." But the latest diet to make waves on social media involves a cup of Joe: the coffee loophole diet. In general, the diet involves adding specific ingredients — like ground cinnamon, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper — to your coffee and drinking it within seven seconds of feeling hungry. TikTokers swear by it , claiming it boosts metabolism and burns belly fat. But let's pump the brakes for a second — while the health benefits of coffee have been well-known, the coffee loophole diet is not backed by research. Not to mention, the long-term health risks are definitely worth considering (ahem, gas and bloating issues). So even if you could bypass the smoky and spiced flavor of cayenne pepper in your coffee, are these additives safe to mix in your drink? To get a better understanding, we tapped two registered dietitians to learn about the coffee loophole diet, including the potential risks and its impact on the body. Dena Champion , MS, RDN, CSO, LD, CNSC, is a registered dietitian nutritionist at The Ohio State Wexner University Medical Center. Courtney Pelitera , MS, RD, CNSC, is a registered dietitian specializing in sports and wellness nutrition. What Is the Coffee Loophole Diet? There are different variations of the coffee loophole diet online. But generally, the trendy diet involves TikTokers adding additional ingredients to their coffee to shed weight and bolster metabolism. While social media users sing their praises of the diet , there's no research or scientific evidence to support that these coffee mixtures even work, let alone that it should be consumed within seven seconds. What Are the Potential Benefits of the Coffee Loophole Diet Dena Champion, MS, RDN, CSO, LD, CNSC, a registered dietitian nutritionist at The Ohio State Wexner University Medical Center, says that she doesn't see any benefits to this diet. Courtney Pelitera, MS, RD, CNSC, agrees — noting that "the dose of ingredients here is not enough to make a difference in your day-to-day metabolism." That said, coffee on its own — without the additives — has been shown to offer several potential health benefits, such as reduced risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and lower incidences of several types of cancers , including colon, rectal, breast, and endometrial , to name a few. That doesn't mean you can't add things to your coffee for taste. "If you want to add something to make your coffee taste better, that's great," explains Pelitera. "Milk, a teaspoon of sugar, milk alternatives are all great options. You just want to be careful not to go overboard with the added sugars." What Are the Risks of the Coffee Loophole Diet? According to Pelitera, the coffee loophole diet may increase one's risk of gas and bloating. "Coffee itself is a food we know causes heartburn in many who drink it regularly," says Pelitera. "If this is something that affects you, I would advise against this." While coffee itself can irritate the digestive system, the ingredients added in the coffee loophole diet could also make matters worse, especially for those with sensitive stomachs. "Most research on turmeric and cayenne had subjects with side effects of bloating and heartburn," Pelitera says. That's because cayenne and chilis contain capsaicin, an active ingredient that stimulates pain receptors in the body, causing a burning sensation, according to a study published in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility . Another study found that ingesting meals containing chili produced higher abdominal pain and burning symptoms when compared to standard meals. In addition, the diet could trigger binge eating episodes due to intense hunger as a result of a liquid diet, explains Champion. While this diet is relatively safe to try in an average healthy adult, says Pelitera, speaking to your healthcare provider and or nutritionist before trying a diet like this is recommended. Alternatives to the Coffee Loophole Diet Champion says that while it may be possible to lose weight in the short run, this diet is unlikely to support any weight loss long term, underscoring the importance of holistic and sustainable plans for weight management. Instead of the coffee loophole diet, Pelitera recommends prioritizing three full meals per day, ensuring each has a good source of fiber, protein, and includes between one and two servings of fruits or vegetables. Hydration is also king when it comes to weight management. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends 11.5 cups of water per day for women and 15.5 cups for men. Upping your water intake may increase a process called lipolysis, a process where your body burns fat for energy, which was found in a study published by Frontiers in Nutrition . Don't underestimate the power of sleep, either. "Less than seven to nine hours of sleep per night in adults has been proven to cause an increase in appetite , hormone regulation, and weight fluctuations," so it's imperative to get plenty of it, says Pelitera. Ultimately, the coffee loophole diet might sound like a quick fix, but it's not the most sustainable or healthiest approach. Instead, experts recommend focusing on small, manageable changes to your overall diet and lifestyle. "Don't buy into it [the hype]," says Pelitera. "Weight management comes from really looking into your day-to-day nutrition habits and creating a healthy, sustainable plan." The billing of London-born former Chelsea boss Hayes against England’s Dutch manager Sarina Wiegman – arguably the best two bosses in the women’s game – had generated more buzz in the build-up than the players on the pitch, despite it being a rare encounter between the two top-ranked sides in the world. Hayes enjoyed her return to familiar shores but felt the US lacked the “killer piece” after they looked the likelier side to make the breakthrough. Elite meeting of the minds 🌟 pic.twitter.com/R4d8EArqTp — U.S. Women's National Soccer Team (@USWNT) November 30, 2024 Asked what was going through her mind during the national anthem, Hayes said: “I was definitely mouthing (it), and Naomi (Girma) and Lynn (Williams) could see that I was struggling with where to be and all that. “I got to the end of the anthems and I thought, ‘that’s so ridiculous. I’m proud to be English and I’m proud of our national anthem, and I’m also really proud to coach America’. “Two things are possible all at once. I don’t want to fuel a nationalist debate around it. The realities are both countries are really dear to me for lots of reasons, and I’m really proud to represent both of them.” The Lionesses did not register a shot on target in the first half but grew into the game in the second. US captain Lindsey Horan had the ball in the net after the break but the flag was up, while Hayes’ side had a penalty award for a handball reversed after a VAR check determined substitute Yazmeen Ryan’s shot hit Alex Greenwood’s chest. Hayes, who left Chelsea after 12 trophy-packed years this summer, said: “I’ve been privileged to coach a lot of top-level games, including here, so there’s a familiarity to being here for me. “It’s not new to me, and because of that there was a whole sense of I’m coming back to a place I know. I have a really healthy perspective, and I want to have a really healthy perspective on my profession. “I give everything I possibly can for a team that I really, really enjoy coaching, and I thrive, not just under pressure, but I like these opportunities, I like being in these situations. They bring out the best in me. “You’ve got two top teams now, Sarina is an amazing coach, I thought it was a good tactical match-up, and I just enjoy coaching a high-level football match, to be honest with you. I don’t think too much about it.” Hayes had travelled to London without her entire Olympic gold medal-winning ‘Triple Espresso’ forward line of Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson and Sophia Smith, all nursing niggling injuries. Before the match, the 48-year-old was spotted chatting with Wiegman and her US men’s counterpart, fellow ex-Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, who was also in attendance. England were also missing a number of key attackers for the friendly including Lauren Hemp, Lauren James and Ella Toone, all ruled out with injury. "This shows where we are at and we need to keep improving. It is November now. This is good but we want to be better again. We have to be better again." 👊 Reaction from the boss ⬇️ — Lionesses (@Lionesses) November 30, 2024 Wiegman brushed aside suggestions from some pundits that her side were content to settle for a draw. She said: “I think we were really defending as a team, very strong. We got momentum in the second half, we did better, and of course both teams went for the win. “So many things happened in this game, also in front of the goal, so I don’t think it was boring. “We wanted to go for the win, but it was such a high-intensity game, you have to deal with a very good opponent, so you can’t just say, ‘Now we’re going to go and score that goal’. “We tried, of course, to do that. We didn’t slow down to keep it 0-0. I think that was just how the game went.”FORESTVILLE, Calif. — A major storm moving through Northern California on Thursday toppled trees and dropped heavy snow and record rain after damaging homes, killing two people and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands in the Pacific Northwest. Forecasters warned that the risk of flash flooding and rockslides would continue, and scores of flights were canceled at San Francisco's airport. In Washington, more than 320,000 people — most of them in the Seattle area — were still without power as crews worked to clear streets of electrical lines, fallen branches and debris. Utility officials said the outages, which began Tuesday, could last into Saturday. Meanwhile on the East Coast, where rare wildfires have raged, New York and New Jersey welcomed much-needed rain that could ease the fire danger for the rest of the year. The National Weather Service extended a flood watch into Saturday for areas north of San Francisco as the region was inundated by the strongest atmospheric river — a long plume of moisture that forms over an ocean and flows through the sky over land — this season. The system roared ashore Tuesday as a "bomb cyclone," unleashing fierce winds. Communities in Washington opened warming centers offering free internet and device charging. A number of medical clinics closed because of power outages. "I've been here since the mid-'80s. I haven't seen anything like this," said Trish Bloor, who serves on the city of Issaquah's Human Resources Commission, as she surveyed damaged homes. Up to 16 inches of rain was forecast in southwestern Oregon and California's northern counties through Friday. The Sonoma County Airport, in the wine country north of San Francisco, received 6.92 inches Wednesday, breaking a record dating to 1998. In nearby Forestville, one person was hurt when a tree fell on a house. Small landslides were reported across the North Bay region, including one on State Route 281 on Wednesday that caused a car crash, according to Marc Chenard, a weather service meteorologist. Rain slowed somewhat, but "persistent heavy rain will enter the picture again by Friday morning," the weather service's San Francisco office said on the social platform X. "We are not done!" Dangerous flash flooding, rockslides and debris flows were possible, especially where hillsides were loosened by recent wildfires, officials warned. Scott Rowe, a hydrologist with the weather service in Sacramento, said that so far the ground has been able to absorb the rain in California's Butte and Tehama counties, where the Park Fire burned over the summer. "It's not necessarily how much rain falls; it's how fast the rain falls," Rowe said. Northern Mendocino and southern Humboldt counties received between 4 and 8 inches of rain in the last 48 hours, and similar amounts were expected over the next 48 hours, forecasters said. Wind gusts could top 50 mph. The storm system, which first hit the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday, reached the status of " bomb cyclone," which occurs when a cyclone intensifies rapidly. A winter storm watch was in place for the northern Sierra Nevada above 3,500 feet, with 15 inches of snow possible over two days. Wind gusts could top 75 mph in mountain areas, forecasters said. Sugar Bowl Resort, north of Lake Tahoe near Donner Summit, picked up a foot of snow overnight, marketing manager Maggie Eshbaugh said Thursday. She said the resort will welcome skiers and boarders on Friday, the earliest opening date in 20 years. "And then we're going to get another whopping of another foot or so on Saturday, so this is fantastic," she said. Another popular resort, Palisades Tahoe, is also opening Friday, five days ahead of schedule, according to its website. The storm already dumped more than a foot of snow along the Cascades in Oregon by Wednesday night, according to the weather service. Forecasters warned of blizzard and whiteout conditions and nearly impossible travel at pass level. Falling trees struck homes and littered roads across western Washington, killing at least two people. A woman in Lynnwood was killed when a large tree fell on a homeless encampment, and another in Bellevue died when a tree fell on a home. More than a dozen schools closed in the Seattle area Wednesday, and some opted to extend the closures through Thursday. In Enumclaw, east of Seattle, residents were cleaning up after their town clocked the highest winds in the state Tuesday night: 74 mph. Resident Sophie Keene said the powerful gusts caused transformers to blow out around town. "Things were exploding, like, everywhere," Keene told the Seattle Times. "Like the transformers over by the park. One blew big, it looked like fireworks just going off." Ben Gibbard, lead singer of the indie rock bands Death Cab for Cutie and Postal Service, drove from his Seattle neighborhood Thursday morning to the woods of Tiger Mountain for his regular weekday run, but there were too many trees blocking the trail. "We didn't get hit that hard in the city," he said. "I just didn't assume it would be this kind of situation out here. Obviously you feel the most for people who had their homes partially destroyed by this." In California, there were reports of more than 20,000 power outages on Thursday. Only 50 vehicles per hour were allowed through part of northbound Interstate 5 from 10 miles north of Redding to 21 miles south of Yreka due to snow, according to California's Department of Transportation. Transportation officials also shut down a two-mile stretch of the famed Avenue of the Giants, a scenic drive named for its towering coast redwoods, due to flooding. About 150 flights were delayed and another two dozen were canceled early Thursday at San Francisco International Airport after hundreds of delays and dozens of cancelations the previous day, according to tracking service FlightAware. Parched areas of the Northeast got a much-needed shot of precipitation Thursday, providing a bit of respite in a region plagued by wildfires and dwindling water supplies. More than 2 inches of rain was expected by Saturday morning in areas north of New York City, with snow mixed in at higher elevations. "Any rainfall is going to be significant at this point," said Brian Ciemnecki, a weather service meteorologist in New York City, where the first drought warning in 22 years was issued this week. "Is it going to break the drought? No, we're going to need more rain than that."GUWAHATI: A bus carrying 28 passengers from both India and Bangladesh met with a minor accident on Saturday in Brahmanbaria while the vehicle was travelling towards Dhaka from Agartala. There was no causality. Officials said that the Dhaka-bound bus owned by Shyamoli Paribahan of Bangladesh carrying 28 passengers -- 17 Indian and 11 Bangladeshi nationals -- left Agartala on Saturday morning. When the bus reached Ashuganj (in Brahmanbaria), 31 km from the Agartala-Akhaura Integrated Check Post, a goods-laden truck tried to overtake it and the bus collided with an auto-rickshaw, leading to a commotion among the local people, the official said. Of the 17 Indian passengers were supposed to go to Kolkata by another bus from Dhaka. Tripura Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury in a social media post said that local residents of Brahmanbaria threatened the Indian passengers travelling on the bus and raised anti-India slogans, made derogatory remarks and even threatened the passengers onboard. Nov. 30—Despite widespread claims on social media from conservative activists, Amish voters cannot be credited with winning Pennsylvania for President-elect Donald Trump, according to vote returns. While there looks to be marginal increase in the number of Amish people who voted this year, experts said they do not expect major shifts in Amish turnout this year, according to early analysis of vote returns in Lancaster County precincts with high Amish populations. The large Amish community in Lancaster County and across the state — many of whom dress plainly, minimize their technology use, and keep to their insular, self-sufficient communities — has long been seen as an untapped voting bloc for Republicans. Many of Pennsylvania's Amish do not vote, with some who view it as in conflict with their religious beliefs of serving God's kingdom by engaging with earthly government. But that has been slowly changing in recent years, with the largest jump occurring four years ago, when Amish turnout more than doubled from 7% in 2016 to 17% in 2020 of the approximate 20,000 Amish people who are of voting age in Lancaster County, or about 3,400 votes. Experts won't know exactly how many Amish voted until final voter rolls are available, when academics will then make the painstaking process of comparing names, addresses and birthdays of voters with those in Amish church directories. The Amish experts, based out of Elizabethtown College's Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, do not digitize or scan the directories, because Amish leaders oppose it. "I do not expect to find a large jump in Amish voters," said Steven Nolt, an Amish expert who runs the Young Center. "In 2020, the overall data suggested something different between 2016 and 2020. That's not the case this time as we eyeball up 2020 and 2024." The push for more Amish voters Republicans wanted to turn out even more Amish voters in Pennsylvania this year, in an election that was expected to be just as close as the last two presidential cycles. President-elect Donald Trump won Pennsylvania by more than 121,000 votes by increasing his vote share across the state, including in Democratic strongholds like Philadelphia. Elon Musk, the world's richest man, said America PAC, the political action committee he launched to boost Trump, organized rides to the polls for Amish, who often do not drive motor vehicles but are allowed to be passengers. Billboards and mailers targeted the Amish community specifically to turn out to vote for Trump. One grassroots group held weekly voter registration drives at Amish markets in Lancaster and Mifflin Counties. Philip Habegger, who grew up Amish in Kentucky as one of 11 children before leaving his community at age 27, said his family "would not have considered voting at all," though they were informed and interested in politics. Habegger, now 31 and living in Lancaster, volunteered with the Trump campaign. The Trump campaign never thought it would quadruple turnout like some pundits claimed, but knew it could convince more Amish people to vote in Pennsylvania in this election. They share many of the same beliefs as Republicans: a focus on religious freedom, economic opportunity, or in other words, want to "mind their business," Habegger said. "As far as efficiency goes, the Amish are much better at these things than the government," Habegger said. Scott Presler, a conservative activist who runs grassroots group Early Vote Action, which hosted targeted weekly voter registration drives and moved to Pennsylvania to flip the state back to red, said his organization is here to stay and is preparing to hire 19 full-time staff next week. And he's doubling down on their engagement with Amish voters, hiring a state director who will be specifically tasked with courting the votes of Amish and Old Order Mennonite communities. "We're not going away. This is a real concerted effort, not just every presidential year," Presler said of his organization's effort to engage more Amish people to vote in Pennsylvania. It's part of his group's larger strategy for incrementally running up the numbers in every county in Pennsylvania: Turn out 500 to 1,000 new voters for Trump, and win the state — which is exactly what Trump did. Presler noted that all counties with large Amish populations produced more votes for Trump this year than in 2020, but he acknowledged these increases were not all attributable to Amish voters. There are more than 90,000 Amish and Old Order Mennonite people living in Pennsylvania, which is the largest population in the country, with the highest population centered in Lancaster County. There are approximately 400,000 Amish people living in the U.S., mostly in Pennsylvania and the Midwest. The population continues to grow at a rapid rate, nearly doubling every 20 years and families have six to nine children on average — which will mean even more voters, Presler added. State Rep. Dave Zimmerman (R., Lancaster), who represents a district with Amish and Old Order Mennonite populations, said these groups were engaged and concerned about the outcome of the election. "The Amish are going to be most concerned about being able to be free to be Amish," Zimmerman added. "Any issue that's out there that is kinda interfering with their lifestyle, it's going to be a concern," such as invasive regulations or restrictions on their religious freedoms. "For the most part, they want to be left alone to raise families, send their kids to school, be down on the farm or be part of their construction business," Zimmerman said. (c)2024 The Philadelphia Inquirer Visit The Philadelphia Inquirer at www.inquirer.com Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.CHICAGO — It took 32 seconds of national embarrassment for George McCaskey, Kevin Warren and Ryan Poles to finally concede what everyone else already knew. And even when the Chicago Bears brain trust decided they no longer could justify keeping Matt Eberflus as head coach of their team, they still waited until he conducted one more news conference — telling us everything was fine and he was preparing for next week’s game against the San Francisco 49ers — before they actually pulled the trigger. Remember, this is an operation worth an estimated $6.4 billion, not a local hardware business trying to decide whether a store clerk should be let go for putting the wingnuts and screws in the wrong aisle. Fittingly, the Bears were the Bears until the last drop. “It’s been a normal operation,” Eberflus said Friday morning on a Zoom call with reporters before being Zoomed out of the NFL. The sad part is the Bears truly believe they are a normal operation when it’s quite obvious they’re the laughingstock of football. Who else would let Eberflus continue to fail time and time again after he repeatedly proved he wasn’t fit for the job. His .304 winning percentage was third-worst in Bears history, ahead of only John Fox (.292) and Abe Gibron (.274). And at least Abe had Melody to help take our minds off all the losing. (Google it, kids.) Eberflus’ days had been numbered since the Hail Mary loss to the Washington Commanders. The 19-3 loss to the lowly New England Patriots on Nov. 10, in which he and his team were booed off the field, would’ve been a perfect time to say sayonara. The Bears had eight games remaining to try to salvage the season, and at 4-5 there was still some hope it could be done. But, no, the McCaskeys don’t fire head coaches in season, we’ve been told a thousand times. Instead they got rid of the sacrificial goat, offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who was replaced by Thomas Brown. Fans would have to suffer through three more brutal endings before George McCaskey finally got it into his head that this marriage was not going to work. The Thanksgiving Day clock blunder will be remembered as the fatal blow, of course, because we all watched in a collective stupor as the clock ticked down and Caleb Williams kept barking out signals, seemingly oblivious to the fact the game was about to end. Even your Aunt Martha, who doesn’t know a football from a drumstick, was yelling: “What is he doing, for crying out loud?” It made for an unforgettable Thanksgiving, with everyone in the living room calling for Eberflus’ head. Then came the “everything is fine” news conference Friday morning that made it appear as though the Bears were actually trying to gaslight their fans. I’m not sure what made McCaskey agree to change the long-standing policy — whether it was Jimmy Johnson’s rant or a tweet by The Wieners Circle — but whoever it was should get a medal of valor for saving the city from a mass mental breakdown. We all saw this coming, except perhaps the Three Amigos: McCaskey, Warren and Poles. That still doesn’t make it any more palatable. The Thanksgiving hangover firing bookends the most famous “hiring” in Bears history, when Mike McCaskey told the media Dave McGinnis would be the head coach before actually informing McGinnis, thus losing both the coach and the rest of his own dwindling credibility. That embarrassing moment would be the lowlight of Mike McCaskey’s career, just as this will be remembered as George’s unshining moment. How will Eberflus be remembered? Was he a poor man’s Pedro Grifol or a poorer man’s Jim Boylen? Until Thursday’s debacle, perhaps the moment that best epitomized the Eberflus era was, during a lopsided loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in October 2023, when he threw the red challenge flag after the Bears scored a meaningless touchdown late in the game. He meant to throw it before the play, but Eberflus was never one to react quickly to any situation. And because there wasn’t any video replay of the actual touchdown, it was no harm, no foul. What comes next for Bears fans is the hard part. Do they trust these executives to hire the right replacement? Almost as much as they trust Mayor Brandon Johnson to manage the city budget. The easiest solution is to throw money at Bill Belichick and see if he bites. If Williams is truly a game-changing quarterback then it makes sense to give the keys to the guy who coached the greatest quarterback of his generation. But making sense is not really the Bears’ thing, so expect them to go for someone they don’t have to give any real power to and will be blander than their last five coaches combined. Someone disposable by 2027. It’s just normal operating procedure at Halas Hall. ©2024 Chicago Tribune. Visit chicagotribune.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
Aaron Judge’s performance in October won’t be forgotten any time soon. Judge hit .184 with 20 strikeouts in 49 at-bats over the course of the Yankees ’ playoff run. His drop on a routine fly ball to center field in Game 5 of the World Series was the beginning of a fifth-inning defensive meltdown, allowing the Dodgers to come back and ultimately close out the series. Considering Judge is expected to lead the Yankees on both sides of the ball — and he has a track record of disappointing production in the playoffs offensively over his career — it’s no surprise that the captain has been subject to widespread criticism. Don’t let that be a distraction from the type of year Judge had in the regular season, though. Judge had an all-time campaign this year. He turned an uncharacteristic start to the season into one of the best single-season performances by a right-handed hitter in MLB history. That’s why Judge was named the Most Valuable Player in the American League for the second time in his career on Thursday night. SIGN UP FOR OUR FREE YANKEES NEWSLETTER: RESTORING THE GLORY Judge won the award unanimously, earning all 30 first-place votes to beat out Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. — who finished second — in a landslide. Juan Soto, who had a career year of his own hitting one spot in front of Judge in the Yankees’ lineup this year, finished third in the AL MVP race. With two MVP Awards to his name, Judge is the seventh player in Yankees history to win multiple MVPs. He joins Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Alex Rodriguez. Judge and Mantle are the only Yankees to ever win the award unanimously. Judge led the league in countless offensive categories this year. He swatted 58 home runs and drove in 144 runs while posting a spectacular 1.159 OPS. Judge worked a league-high 133 walks and his 11.2 FanGraphs WAR was the best in baseball. There was an extended stretch over the summer where Judge was on a pace to reach and possibly break his own single-season home run record (62 in 2022, his other MVP season). The same goes for a bid at a Triple Crown. Judge finished the year with a career-best .322 batting average, the third-highest mark in the American League. He was 11 points lower than Witt. The stretch that truly defined his season began on April 27. Judge entered play on that day in Milwaukee with a .178 batting average and .674 OPS on the season. He had only four home runs with 35 strikeouts across 27 games. Over his next 100 games, through August 23, Judge hit .378 with 45 home runs. It was the first time in MLB history a player batted higher than .375 with 45-plus homers in a stretch of 100 games within a single season. First Minister John Swinney and former prime minister Gordon Brown joined the service at St Giles’ Cathedral, with deputy first minister Kate Forbes and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar. Mr Swinney was booed as he arrived, with at least one person in the crowd outside on the Royal Mile shouting he was a “traitor”. The memorial is being led by Reverend George Whyte. Mr Salmond’s lifelong friend and Alba Party acting leader Kenny MacAskill is expected to speak. Mr Salmond, the former leader of the Scottish National Party and Alba Party, died last month in North Macedonia at the age of 69. He was elected MP for Banff and Buchan in 1987 and first became SNP leader in 1990. With the creation of the Scottish Parliament in 1999, he became leader of the opposition at Holyrood while retaining his seat at Westminster. He stood down as SNP leader in 2000 and left the Scottish Parliament in 2001, but returned as leader in 2004 and guided the SNP to a narrow Scottish election win in 2007, becoming the first SNP first minister. Mr Salmond signed the Edinburgh Agreement with David Cameron on October 15 2012, setting out the terms of the Scottish independence referendum held in 2014. Despite losing the referendum and subsequently quitting as first minister, Mr Salmond continued in politics with the SNP. He stood for the upstart Alba Party at the 2021 Holyrood election after a rift with his successor Nicola Sturgeon and he left the SNP for good. Mr Salmond was at a conference in North Macedonia when he suffered a heart attack. His body was repatriated with the help of businessman Sir Tom Hunter. He was buried in a private family ceremony near his home in Strichen, Aberdeenshire, on October 29.
Daily bread: Barrio Bread sports holiday loaves, and lines, ahead of ThanksgivingNew Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) Gold prices have breached Rs 80,000 per 10 grams levels in major Indian cities, recovering from the impact of Donald Trump's expected high tariff trade policy and a firm US dollar, analysts said. A flare-up in geopolitical tensions due to the Russia-Ukraine war is bolstering the precious metal, which crossed the USD 2,700 an ounce level in global markets, they added. The uncertainty surrounding the US economy and volatile stock markets are also driving inflows into the safe-haven, however, the US Federal Reserve's (Fed) cautious attitude towards policy interest rate and strong US dollar are acting as headwinds for the bullion, analysts stated. On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold prices tanked Rs 6,775, or 8.5 per cent, to hit Rs 73,000 per 10 grams after Donald Trump's victory raised expectations of a restricted trade policy by the US. "Gold prices had fallen 8 per cent after the US election results. "The strengthening US dollar index which rose from USD 101 to 107.5 pressured gold immensely, while Trump's pro-cryptocurrency stance during his campaign diverted investor funds seeking higher returns," Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst, Commodity and Currency at LKP Securities, said. Further, Trump's pledge to impose a 10 per cent tariff on all US imports further limits the Federal Reserve's ability to ease aggressively, adding to the downward pressure on gold, he said. However, recent missile attacks by Russia at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro heightened geopolitical tensions, bolstering the gold's appeal as safe haven investment. "Gold prices surged significantly as geopolitical tensions fuelled safe-haven demand, driven by renewed fears of nuclear risks in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict," Trivedi added. Rising global unease pushed gold higher by USD 38 on Comex, closing at USD 2,707 per ounce, and by Rs 900 on MCX, reaching Rs 77,600 on Friday. "This sharp recovery highlights gold's resilience and its role in balancing portfolios during uncertain times," he said. In spot markets, the precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity surged Rs 1,100 to hit a two-week high of Rs 80,400 per 10 grams, while the price of gold of 99.5 per cent purity soared Rs 1,100, to reclaim the Rs 80,000-mark again on Friday. Meanwhile, in futures trade on the MCX on Friday, gold contracts for December delivery rose Rs 69, or 0.09 per cent, to close at Rs 77,685 per 10 grams. Gold regained lost ground, and a bullish sentiment remains intact and the precious metal is likely to trade in a range of Rs 77,000-78,300 on the MCX, analysts said. The ongoing wedding season in India is also pushing gold buying interest by jewellers and retailers, they added. "Wedding season is pivotal for our business, with bridal or wedding jewellery constituting a significant share of our sales. During the ongoing wedding season this year, we are witnessing healthy demand for bridal jewellery across all our stores in India," M P Ahammed, Chairman at Malabar Group, said. Key macroeconomic data, such as the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes, and the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, to be released next week, which will play a critical role in investor sentiment towards the bullion, traders said. Market participants will also await the US Q3 GDP data that will provide further direction for the yellow metal, they added. US coach Emma Hayes admits to anthem uncertainty ahead of England stalemateWhy Manchester United and Man City's Sunday kick-off times are earlier than usual
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The congregated as a team Wednesday for the first time since Sunday's win over the , only an important figure was missing from the group: . "LeBron is not with the team right now," Lakers coach JJ Redick said after practice. "He's out for personal reasons, excused absence." James because of soreness in his left foot. It was the first game James, 39, missed all season. With the schedule providing a break -- L.A. plays just two games in a 10-day stretch from Dec. 9-18 -- Redick gave the entire team Monday off and designated Tuesday as an optional "get what you need" day. Redick met with many of the Lakers' players individually Tuesday, but James was not present, the coach said. The coach was asked about the upcoming break on Sunday and made it clear he would give his players the freedom to use the time as they deemed fit. "Heck, if somebody wants to go spend a couple of nights in Santa Barbara and relax, that's fine too," Redick said after the Blazers game. "It's a quarter way through the season." Redick added that James is currently "taking some time" and he was unclear whether the 22-year veteran would be back with the team for their next game, Friday on the road against the . Lakers backup center said James' presence was missed, but he was not worried about him falling behind on the team's schemes because of his absence. "I mean, we know he already knows everything," Koloko said. "He's going to come back and he's still going to be the same. He's going to give everything on the court. "We just got to do our part and just get better so that when he comes back, he can just look at us and be like, 'Oh, yeah, [they] were actually working,' when he wasn't there. But we know he'll come back and just pick up everything. He's been in the NBA for a long time." On the season, James is averaging 23 points on 49.5% shooting (35.9% from 3), 9.1 assists and 8.0 rebounds. Redick said he is in constant communication with both James and his longtime athletic trainer, Mike Mancias, about managing the four-time MVP's workload as he nears his 40th birthday at the end of the month. "In game, he's asked for a sub a couple times because he's gassed," Redick said. "For us, we have to be cognizant as we play more and more games, just the cumulative effect of playing a lot of minutes and Sunday, being banged up with the foot thing, it felt like a good opportunity for him to get some rest." Redick added that Lakers starting shooting guard , who missed the past five games with a left pelvic injury, returned to practice Wednesday and was able to join his teammates for most of the drills. "I wouldn't call Austin a full participant," Redick said. "There was one thing that he sat out that we suggested ... that was probably not good for him, just due to the nature of the drill. It was particularly a physical drill and just want to be mindful of his pain tolerance. But he was full participant of all the 5-on-5, live stuff and all the breakdown drills." Reaves is considered day-to-day heading into the Minnesota game, according to Redick.
Schlumberger Limited (NYSE:SLB) Shares Bought by Commerce BankMumbai, Nov 30 (IANS): Congress leader Bhai Jagtap has defended his controversial remarks about the Election Commission of India (ECI), which sparked a major political controversy. Jagtap, who referred to the ECI as 'dog' of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has refused to back down, asserting "his statement reflects the sentiments of crores of people". Backing his remarks, Jagtap -- a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, told IANS: "I am firm on my statement. This is not just Bhai Jagtap’s statement, but the sentiments of crores of people." He accused the ECI of undermining democracy and creating confusion in voters' minds, particularly after the Maharashtra Assembly election results. "The Election Commission is supposed to strengthen our democracy, not cause doubts," Jagtap added, questioning why the ECI did not act on alleged violations such as BJP leader Ram Shinde's comments on "involvement of money in the electoral process". He also raised concerns over the ECI's decision to erase Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) data and conduct mock polling, urging the poll body to address these issues. Bhai Jagtap also responded to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's remarks at the Congress Working Committee meeting about the party's 'below-expectation' performance, wherein Kharge questioned the over-reliance on national leaders and urged party workers to focus more on local issues. Jagtap agreed with Kharge, saying: "What he said is true. Every political party needs to evaluate itself for improvement. If both Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi feel this way, it’s important that we address our weaknesses." On the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) decision not to play in Pakistan in the upcoming Champions Trophy, Jagtap, a "former cricketer" himself, insisted that sports should not be politicised. "It's a BCCI decision, and they know best about it."
