COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. (AP) — For a pair of lower-level downhill events, this sure had plenty of Olympic medal-capturing and World Cup-winning ski racers. The stage belonged to , the 40-year-old who took another step on her comeback trail Saturday with her first races in nearly six years. Vonn wasn't particularly speedy and finished in the middle of the pack day at Copper Mountain. Times and places weren't the mission, though, as much as getting used to the speed again and gaining the necessary points to compete on the World Cup circuit this season. Vonn accomplished both, finishing 24th in the first downhill race of the day and 27th in the second. She posted on social media after the FIS races that she had enough points to enter World Cup events. The timing couldn't be more perfect — the next stop on the women's circuit is Beaver Creek, Colorado, in a week. Vonn, who used to own a home in nearby Vail, hasn't committed to any sort of timetable for a World Cup return. “Today was a solid start and I had a blast being in start with my teammates again!” Vonn wrote . “While I’m sure people will speculate and say I’m not in top form because of the results, I disagree. This was training for me. I’m still testing equipment and getting back in the groove.” Her competition — a veritable who's who of high-profile ski racers — applauded her efforts. “I don't expect her to come back and win — just that she comes back and she has fun,” said Federica Brignone of Italy, a former overall World Cup champion and three-time Olympic medalist. “She's having fun, and she’s doing what she loves. That’s the best thing that she could do.” In the first race on a frigid morning, 1.44 seconds behind the winning time of 1 minute, 5.79 seconds posted by Mirjam Puchner of Austria. In her second race through the course later in the morning, Vonn was 1.53 seconds behind Cornelia Huetter of Austria, who finished in 1:05.99. Huetter is the reigning season-long World Cup downhill champion. “It’s really nice to compare with her again, and nice to have her (racing) again,” Huetter said. “For sure, for the skiing World Cup, we have a lot of more attention. It's generally good for all racers because everyone is looking.” Also in the field were Nadia Delago of Italy, who won a bronze medal in downhill at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, and Puchner, the Olympic silver winner in super-G in Beijing. In addition, there was Marta Bassino of Italy, a winner of the super-G at the 2023 world championships, and two-time Olympic champion Michelle Gisin of Switzerland. “For me, it was really a training, but it was fun to have a World Cup race level right here,” Gisin said. “It was a crazy race.” Vonn remains a popular figure and took the time after each run to sign autographs for young fans along with posing for photos. When she left the sport, Vonn had 82 World Cup race victories, which stood as the record for a woman and within reach of the all-time Alpine record of 86 held by Swedish standout Ingemar Stenmark. The women’s mark held by Vonn was surpassed in January 2023 by Mikaela Shiffrin, who now has 99 wins — more than any Alpine ski racer in the history of the sport. Shiffrin is currently sidelined after a , last weekend. Vonn’s last major race was in February 2019, when she finished third in a downhill during the world championships in Sweden. The three-time Olympic medalist left the circuit still near the top of her game. But all the broken arms and legs, concussions and torn knee ligaments took too big a toll and sent her into retirement. She had a partial knee replacement last April and felt good enough to give racing another shot. “It's very impressive to see all the passion that Lindsey still has,” Gisin said. Also racing Saturday was 45-year-old Sarah Schleper, who once competed for the United States but now represents Mexico. Schleper was the next racer behind Vonn and they got a chance to share a moment between a pair of 40-somethings still racing. “I was like, ‘Give me some tips, Lindsey,’” Schleper said. “She’s like, ‘Oh, it’s a highway tuck, the whole thing.’ Then she’s like, ‘It’s just like the good old days.’" AP skiing:Donna Cipley of Levittown awarded $2M in suit alleging Nassau police falsely arrested her

Worried residents flee and stock up on supplies BEIRUT (AP) — Insurgents’ stunning march across Syria is gaining speed with news that they have reached the suburbs of the capital of Damascus. The government on Saturday was forced to deny rumors that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The rebels’ moves around Damascus were reported by an opposition war monitor and a rebel commander. They came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including two provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. But the president-elect is already moving aggressively to not only fill his Cabinet and outline policy goals, but also to try to achieve his priorities. In recent days, Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, two of the country’s largest trading partners. That led to emergency calls and a visit. And he's warned of “ALL HELL TO PAY” if Hamas doesn't release the hostages still being held captive in Gaza. South Korea's president avoids an impeachment attempt over short-lived martial law SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s embattled President Yoon Suk Yeol has avoided an opposition-led attempt to impeach him over his short-lived imposition of martial law. Most of Yoon's ruling party lawmakers boycotted a parliamentary vote Saturday to deny a two-thirds majority needed to suspend his presidential powers. The scrapping of the motion is expected to intensify protests calling for Yoon’s ouster and deepen political chaos in South Korea. A survey suggests a majority of South Koreans support the president’s impeachment. Yoon’s martial law declaration drew criticism from his own ruling conservative People Power Party. But the party also apparently fears losing the presidency to liberals. Here's what to know NEW YORK (AP) — Weighted blankets are a popular choice to warm up in cold weather, but research on their effectiveness is limited. Such blankets come with extra heft in the form of glass beads, pellets or cotton. They're also more expensive than regular blankets. Scientists think the added pressure could calm the brain’s fight-or-flight response or signal the brain to produce what’s called the love hormone. There isn’t a ton of research on whether weighted blankets actually work, and the studies that do exist are on small groups. Experts say there’s no harm in giving them a try if you're willing to splurge.
A political party in North Macedonia on Saturday demanded authorities ban social networks whose content incites violence and self-destructive behavior after several young people were seriously injured in connection with the popular “Superman challenge” on TikTok . Health authorities said at least 17 students, ages 10 to 17, were brought to hospitals in the capital Skopje and other towns over the past week with broken bones, contusions and bruises. The children were injured after being thrown into the air by their friends to fly like superheroes and get applause on the internet. The Liberal-Democratic Party, which was part of the left-led coalition that ruled the country from 2016 to earlier in 2024, issued a press statement Saturday strongly condemning “the irresponsible spread of dangerous content on social media, such as the latest TikTok 'challenge' known as ‘Superman,’ which has injured six children across (the country) in the past 24 hours.” “The lack of adequate control over the content of social media allows such ‘games’ to reach the most vulnerable users,” the party statement said. It demanded the “immediate introduction of measures to ban content that incites violence and self-destructive behavior, increase surveillance, and sanction platforms that enable dangerous trends.” North Macedonia’s education minister Vesna Janevska said students should focus on education, not TikTok challenges. “The ban on mobile phones in schools will not have an effect. Phones will be available to children in their homes, neighborhoods and other environments,” she said. Psychologists have warned that the desire to be “in” with the trends on social networks, combined with excessive use of mobile phones, is the main reason for the rise in risky behaviors among children. They urged parents and schools to talk with students.LA Galaxy win record 6th MLS CupNEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 26, 2024-- FOX News Channel (FNC) commanded its highest-share of the cable news audience in network history across total day, holding 62% of the cable news audience during the historic election month, according to data from Nielsen Media Research. Nebula Care Hospital Limited with company number: RC-7133773, incorporated in Nigeria on Sep 12, 2023 is situated at Wilmer Street, Ilupeju, Lagos State. The chairman of Nebula Hospital Care Limited is Dr. J.G. Makadia. Nebula Care was opened on the 19th December, 2024, even as the management disclosed that the hospital has the latest high tech in medical delivery offerings and that it would handle general sickness, general trauma, joint replacement, spine, physiotherapy services, general surgery, gynaecology, Dentistry, radiology, x-ray, ECG, sonography, ultrasound, has pharmacy, and clinical laboratory, among others. Its specialty is in orthopaedic trauma, accidental trauma, related spine surgery, as a team of Indian medical specialists will be coming from India, to join their Nigerian counterparts to carry out major surgical operations as soon as the need arise. While declaring the hospital open, Consulate General of India/High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, Shri Chandramouli Kumar Kern, spoke glowingly about the hospital and the optimism it holds for Medicare in not only Lagos State but Nigeria in General. Makadia stated that Nebula is a very well-known name in the field of orthopaedic implant and related items. He said “I am very glad to open this facility, Nebula Care Hospital, it is going to be very significant in the health care system in Lagos and Nigeria. Nebula is a very well-known name in the field of orthopaedic implant and related items, they have many products which are very helpful in the rehabilitation of patients. “Modern day’s technology is evolving everyday so the health care system is also evolving, the most important this is the facilities are up to date and world class for the benefits of Lagosians. I am happy to note that this facility is wonderful. ”Shri Chandramouli Kumar Kern also spoke about the economic angle of the hospital to Nigerians as it is not only going to reduce medical tourism to India, it is going to bring down the cost of medical treatment. “It is possible to receive treatments for which Nigerians travel to India thereby saving millions of dollars on transportation. “This is possible, you see, I am going to give you an example, India is 9000 kilometers from this place, and still many people travel to India to obtain medical care, this facility is now right here in Lagos, it is going to be wonderful. You see people come to our Consulate for Visa and Visa is around a million, then after, the ticket is around a million, about N4million is spend without taking any medicine, without taking any medical care, but if you have the facility locally that would be more than enough for treating patients,He added that the hospital would br cost effective. “This is going to be cost effective also. This hospital can keep tracking people and when two, three patients are here, they could be operated here in their local Environment, they don’t have to eat Indian food, they would eat their own egusi soup, and get the treatment. You see, fantastic, I have come across many Nigerians, they said look, medical facility is wonderful but because of food I will not go to India. It is difficult, when you move to a place and you stay there for a month, it is difficult, the same thing if I have to go to America for treatment, it is going to be difficult for me. So it is a great thing that this facility is coming locally in Lagos and indeed Nigeria. ”I was at Java Moss they have started antibiotic factory, so they are going to be manufacturing antibiotics here, it is great. The local Indians are joining together with their Nigerian counterparts to create a better health care system that help to improve the health care ecosystem. “This is wonderful news, I congratulate the team of Nebular Care that this facility should be successful so that more value will be added in the health care system.Shri Chandramouli Kumar Kern who also commended other Indian investors in the healthcare system said the hospital is affordable. “If it is not cost effective this place will not grow, the local facility is certainly going to be cost effective, if they are bringing doctors from India or any other facilities, there would be five, ten, 20 people so that will spread the cost so it they charge you, it would be spread on 20 not on one person who is going to India. ”While stating that the facility is the only Nebula Hospital in Nigeria disclosed that India has very warm relationship with Nigeria. “Indian government has a very warm relationship with the Lagos State and Nigeria governments, you may be aware that the Indian Prime Minister was here and we had great engagement with the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the cooperation is vibrant, and we are happy to assist the Nigerian healthcare system in any way possible. “I am saying we are for even the local production of medicine, we are not just for supplying of medicine from India, no, the medical facility should grow in Nigeria locally. We have witnessed this when Covid was there, people were having money but they could not get medicine, if there was local production of medicine, you would have medicine any time. So that is important that local manufacturing facility grow, and we are here to support this cause, with the API, the technology, the machine, everything. We are ready to assist Nigeria, Lagos State Government as far as the hospital is concerned,” he said.General Manager of Nebular Care Hospital Mr Jay Ghosalkai, made it public that the hospital handles all types of general sicknesses, general trauma, joint replacement, spine, physiotherapy services, general surgery, gynaecology, Dentistry, radiology, x-ray, ECG, sonography, ultra sound, has pharmacy, clinical laboratory. ”Our specialty is in orthopaedic trauma, anything accidental trauma, related spine surgery, my team will be coming from India, they are specialists. They are specialising in trauma and joint replacement, also we have some of the Nigerian doctors who are one of the best in Nigeria today, who will also be coming for surgery here.Razaq Olusola Ajala, Chairman, Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA) who was present at the inauguration of the hospital said he felt elated and happy. He acknowledged the contributions of Indians in Ilupeju where he is the chief host even as he averred that the hospital would be of mutual benefits to both the locals and the Indians. “This hospital in Idi-Olowo-Ojuwoye by extension, Lagos State will automatically reduce medical tourism, most of our people travel to India and other developed climes because of the belief that they have the capacity in terms of manpower and facilities to attend to their health challenges, so with the location of this facility given the number of experts that will be working within the facility, the equipment, our people need not look elsewhere, they will see this place as a destination of choice whenever they are challenged health-wise because the same treatment they are given in India and other climes, they can as well get it here. Why wasting your money traveling from here to India, if you even think of the attendant risks involved in travelling from here to those places, as I said earlier, it is a destination of choice,” Ajala stated. He said there is excellent relationship between his government and the Indian community and as the local government Chairman he would ensure his ward patronize the facility. “The truth is that we have excellent relationship with Indian community. You would agree with me that we have long history that is of mutual benefit to both parties, I mean Nigerians and Indians. When you are talking of communities with highest concentration of Indians, you would agree with me that Ilupeju happens to be one of that community, we have excellent relationship between the government of Idi-Olowo-Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area and the Indians here. “It is a symbiotic relationship, we are lucky the Indians are lucky, because we have used the instrumentality of our position to provide a conducive environment for them to sleep with their two eyes open, and for them to see our community as a destination of choice whenever they want to make investment decision. ”He said his government ensures the safety and well-being of everyone no matter the nationality or tribe. “My leadership platform ensures that everyone living within Idi-Olowo-Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area whether you are Indian, Briton, American, Nigerian, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, it is my responsibility as a government to ensure we have excellent relationship with all the security operatives of our people to be able to sleep with our two eyes closed, and to some extent, I think we have been able to achieve that.”By ALEXANDRA OLSON and CATHY BUSSEWITZ NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart’s sweeping rollback of its diversity policies is the strongest indication yet of a profound shift taking hold at U.S. companies that are revaluating the legal and political risks associated with bold programs to bolster historically underrepresented groups in business. The changes announced by the world’s biggest retailer followed a string of legal victories by conservative groups that have filed an onslaught of lawsuits challenging corporate and federal programs aimed at elevating minority and women-owned businesses and employees. The risk associated with some of programs crystalized with the election of former President Donald Trump, whose administration is certain to make dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion programs a priority. Trump’s incoming deputy chief of policy will be his former adviser Stephen Miller , who leads a group called America First Legal that has aggressively challenged corporate DEI policies. “There has been a lot of reassessment of risk looking at programs that could be deemed to constitute reverse discrimination,” said Allan Schweyer, principal researcher the Human Capital Center at the Conference Board. “This is another domino to fall and it is a rather large domino,” he added. Among other changes, Walmart said it will no longer give priority treatment to suppliers owned by women or minorities. The company also will not renew a five-year commitment for a racial equity center set up in 2020 after the police killing of George Floyd. And it pulled out of a prominent gay rights index . Schweyer said the biggest trigger for companies making such changes is simply a reassessment of their legal risk exposure, which began after U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in June 2023 that ended affirmative action in college admissions. Since then, conservative groups using similar arguments have secured court victories against various diversity programs, especially those that steer contracts to minority or women-owned businesses. Most recently, the conservative Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty won a victory in a case against the U.S. Department of Transportation over its use of a program that gives priority to minority-owned businesses when it awards contracts. Companies are seeing a big legal risk in continuing with DEI efforts, said Dan Lennington, a deputy counsel at the institute. His organization says it has identified more than 60 programs in the federal government that it considers discriminatory, he said. “We have a legal landscape within the entire federal government, all three branches — the U.S. Supreme Court, the Congress and the President — are all now firmly pointed in the direction towards equality of individuals and individualized treatment of all Americans, instead of diversity, equity and inclusion treating people as members of racial groups,” Lennington said. The Trump administration is also likely to take direct aim at DEI initiatives through executive orders and other policies that affect private companies, especially federal contractors. “The impact of the election on DEI policies is huge. It can’t be overstated,” said Jason Schwartz, co-chair of the Labor & Employment Practice Group at law firm Gibson Dunn. With Miller returning to the White House, rolling back DEI initiatives is likely to be a priority, Schwartz said. “Companies are trying to strike the right balance to make clear they’ve got an inclusive workplace where everyone is welcome, and they want to get the best talent, while at the same time trying not to alienate various parts of their employees and customer base who might feel one way or the other. It’s a virtually impossible dilemma,” Schwartz said. A recent survey by Pew Research Center showed that workers are divided on the merits of DEI policies. While still broadly popular, the share of workers who said focusing on workplace diversity was mostly a good thing fell to 52% in the November survey, compared to 56% in a similar survey in February 2023. Rachel Minkin, a research associated at Pew called it a small but significant shift in short amount of time. There will be more companies pulling back from their DEI policies, but it likely won’t be a retreat across the board, said David Glasgow, executive director of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at New York University. “There are vastly more companies that are sticking with DEI,” Glasgow said. “The only reason you don’t hear about it is most of them are doing it by stealth. They’re putting their heads down and doing DEI work and hoping not to attract attention.” Glasgow advises organizations to stick to their own core values, because attitudes toward the topic can change quickly in the span of four years. “It’s going to leave them looking a little bit weak if there’s a kind of flip-flopping, depending on whichever direction the political winds are blowing,” he said. One reason DEI programs exist is because without those programs, companies may be vulnerable to lawsuits for traditional discrimination. “Really think carefully about the risks in all directions on this topic,” Glasgow said. Walmart confirmed will no longer consider race and gender as a litmus test to improve diversity when it offers supplier contracts. Last fiscal year, Walmart said it spent more than $13 billion on minority, women or veteran-owned good and service suppliers. It was unclear how its relationships with such business would change going forward. Organizations that that have partnered with Walmart on its diversity initiatives offered a cautious response. The Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, a non-profit that last year named Walmart one of America’s top corporation for women-owned enterprises, said it was still evaluating the impact of Walmart’s announcement. Pamela Prince-Eason, the president and CEO of the organization, said she hoped Walmart’s need to cater to its diverse customer base will continue to drive contracts to women-owned suppliers even if the company no longer has explicit dollar goals. “I suspect Walmart will continue to have one of the most inclusive supply chains in the World,” Prince-Eason wrote. “Any retailer’s ability to serve the communities they operate in will continue to value understanding their customers, (many of which are women), in order to better provide products and services desired and no one understands customers better than Walmart.” Related Articles National News | Bird flu virus was found in raw milk. Several of those companies have subsequently announced that they are pulling back their initiatives, including Ford , Harley-Davidson, Lowe’s and Tractor Supply . Walmart confirmed to The Associated Press that it will better monitor its third-party marketplace items to make sure they don’t feature sexual and transgender products aimed at minors. The company also will stop participating in the Human Rights Campaign’s annual benchmark index that measures workplace inclusion for LGBTQ+ employees. A Walmart spokesperson added that some of the changes were already in progress and not as a result of conversations that it had with Starbuck. RaShawn “Shawnie” Hawkins, senior director of the HRC Foundation’s Workplace Equality Program, said companies that “abandon” their commitments workplace inclusion policies “are shirking their responsibility to their employees, consumers, and shareholders.” She said the buying power of LGBTQ customers is powerful and noted that the index will have record participation of more than 1,400 companies in 2025.
Syrian insurgents reach the capital's suburbs. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions. The factions are by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the United Nations. An archbishop's knock formally restores Notre Dame to life as winds howl and heads of state look on PARIS (AP) — France’s iconic Notre Dame Cathedral has formally reopened its doors for the first time since a devastating fire nearly destroyed the 861-year-old landmark in 2019. The five-year restoration is widely seen as a boost for French President Emmanuel Macron, who championed the ambitious timeline, and brings a welcome respite from his domestic political woes. World leaders, dignitaries, and worshippers gathered on Saturday evening for the celebrations under the cathedral's soaring arches. The celebration was attended by 1,500 dignitaries, including President-elect Donald Trump, Britain’s Prince William, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. For Catholics, Notre Dame’s rector said the cathedral “carries the enveloping presence of the Virgin Mary, a maternal and embracing presence.′′ Trump is welcomed by Macron to Paris with presidential pomp and joined by Zelenskyy for their talks PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron has welcomed Donald Trump to Paris with a full a dose of presidential pomp. Trump isn't back in office but he's already pushing his agenda and negotiating with world leaders NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is making threats, traveling abroad, and negotiating with world leaders. He has more than a month-and-a-half to go before he’s sworn in for a second term. Days after gunman killed UnitedHealthcare's CEO, police push to ID him and FBI offers reward NEW YORK (AP) — Nearly four days after the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, police still do not know the gunman’s name or whereabouts or have a motive for the killing. But they have made some progress in their investigation into Wednesday's killing of the leader of the largest U.S. health insurer, including that the gunman likely left New York City on a bus soon after fleeing the scene. The also found that the gunman left something behind: a backpack that was discovered in Central Park. Police are working with the FBI, which on Friday night announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. It was a long time coming for the Nebraska Cornhuskers but it all finally came together Saturday on a memorable afternoon in Lincoln. In beating Wisconsin 44-25, the Huskers became bowl-eligible for the first time since 2016, beat the Badgers for the first time since 2012 and showed their most progress this season. Over the past several weeks, head coach Matt Rhule and even new offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen have said the players have to make plays, execute and stay locked in for a full 60 minutes. Related: Huskers become bowl-eligible with dominant 44-25 win over Wisconsin Follow us on Facebook “They’ve wanted to get it done, it’s gonna come down just really to execution, how we match up with Wisconsin, the things that we do well, so I’ve just encouraged them to focus and I’ve encouraged them not to shy away from the gravity of this," Rhule said leading up to the game. "To lock into it and lean into it, the only way out is to go through it and so they’ve gotta bust through this weekend.” He added, "I want us to go win the game and I want our players to walk off proud knowing that they won the game." On the day Nebraska honored roughly 30 players on Senior Day, the Big Red finally accomplished those goals felt the emotions they've long been waiting for. “This will be the last time we ever celebrate six wins but, as I’ve told our players, it’s always hard to be the first to do it," Rhule said. “My speech to them in the locker room was, 'I would do anything to do this for you but I can’t, you have to go do it.' ... I got a little bit choked up there too (during the BTN postgame interview)," he added, "because, they’ve worked so hard and I wanted them to have this.” "You know what, we don't have a place for it, but we're going to find one!" Matt Rhule talks @HuskerFootball being bowl eligible and taking home the Freedom Trophy for the first in his tenure at Nebraska 🙌 #B1GFootball pic.twitter.com/QBVCjtFfon Not only did they do it but the Huskers did it in a big way. They racked up their most points and second-most yards since Rhule took over and got their biggest margin of victory over a power-conference team since a 56-7 shellacking of Northwestern on Oct. 2, 2021. Importantly, Nebraska secured a bowl game berth with the win but the team and state also felt some things it hasn't for a long time. “Joy. I mean, just to finally attain one of the goals we had for our season and prevail through all the adversity that’s been thrown at us, to be able to go out and be able to do it, it’s awesome,” senior defensive tackle Ty Robinson said. “It was incredible. I’m ecstatic," said wide receiver Jahmal Banks. "Everyone that loves Nebraska won today. Moments like that come once in a lifetime so I definitely cherished that. I’m definitely grateful to be a part of that.” “It felt great, it felt amazing," running back Emmett Johnson described. "It’s been awhile since we’ve gone on to a bowl game. I’m really happy for the seniors and the guys that have been here for a long time through the ups and downs. It was exciting in the locker room, that was a great feeling.” And some relief? “Yes. 100%. 100%," Rhule admitted. "And again, it’s relief in that I’ve got the benefit of doing this twice before ... so to come full tilt two years later, to be able to run the football in the game, to be able to stop the run, yeah, I’m proud of them but it does feel like relief and it feels like relief because I want those older players to know ... we’re not snakebit, there is no curse, you’ve just gotta go play good football and if you play good football, good things will happen.” That's what the Huskers did, they played good football. There were still missed opportunities and is certainly a lot of room for growth, but when the coaches put them in good spots, the players delivered more often than not. According to Pro Football Focus, Nebraska's running backs and receivers forced 18 missed tackles on Saturday, easily their most of the season. It's no coincidence the Huskers also tallied six runs of at least 10 yards — something they've only done one other time this season, back in Week 2 against Colorado. “I just think they went out and they executed. ... The players made the explosive plays, the players made people miss," Rhule said. "Like, Emmett was untackleable at times today, right?” There is a lot left to do, but this was the next step this team needed to take. The program can't get back to being a contender without first making a bowl game, and that has now been accomplished, which is reason for celebration. “It’s big for the state. It felt good to get the win for us and for them. I know this state’s been through a lot with us, they go through it with us and they’ve stuck by us this whole time and they haven’t given up on us so it was awesome to see,” senior defensive back Isaac Gifford said. It's also reason to celebrate because, as Rhule said, the standard has now been raised. Next year, sights will be set much higher than just six wins and a bowl game, and the team knows that. “Playoffs next year," quarterback Dylan Raiola said. "I mean, as simple as that.” Dylan Widger-Imagn Images
WASHINGTON (AP) — Matt Gaetz withdrew Thursday as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general amid continued fallout over a federal sex trafficking investigation that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation's chief federal law enforcement officer. The announcement caps a turbulent eight-day period in which Trump sought to capitalize on his decisive election win to force Senate Republicans to accept provocative selections like Gaetz, who had been investigated by the Justice Department before being tapped last week to lead it. The decision could heighten scrutiny on other controversial Trump nominees, including Pentagon pick Pete Hegseth , who faces sexual assault allegations that he denies. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” Gaetz, a Florida Republican who one day earlier met with senators in an effort to win their support, said in a statement. “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1," he added. Trump, in a social media post, said: “I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!” He did not immediately announce a new selection. Last week, he named personal lawyers Todd Blanche, Emil Bove and D. John Sauer to senior roles in the department. Another possible contender, Matt Whitaker, was announced Wednesday as the U.S. ambassador to NATO. The withdrawal, just a week after the pick was announced, averts what was shaping up to be a pitched confirmation fight that would have tested how far Senate Republicans were willing to go to support Trump’s Cabinet picks. The selection of the fierce Trump ally over well-regarded veteran lawyers whose names had circulated as possible contenders stirred concern for the Justice Department's independence at a time when Trump has openly threatened to seek retribution against political adversaries. It underscored the premium Trump places on personal loyalty and reflected the president-elect's desire to have a disruptor lead a Justice Department that for years investigated and ultimately indicted him. In the Senate, deeply skeptical lawmakers sought more information about Justice Department and congressional investigations into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls, which Gaetz has denied. Meanwhile, Justice Department lawyers were taken aback by the pick of a partisan lawmaker with limited legal experience who has echoed Trump's claims of a weaponized criminal justice system. As Gaetz sought to lock down Senate support, concern over the sex trafficking allegations showed no signs of abating. In recent days, an attorney for two women said his clients told House Ethics Committee investigators that Gaetz paid them for sex on multiple occasions beginning in 2017, when Gaetz was a Florida congressman. One of the women testified she saw Gaetz having sex with a 17-year-old at a party in Florida in 2017, according to the attorney, Joel Leppard. Leppard has said that his client testified she didn’t think Gaetz knew the girl was underage, stopped their relationship when he found out and did not resume it until after she turned 18. The age of consent in Florida is 18. "They’re grateful for the opportunity to move forward with their lives,” Leppard said Thursday of his clients. “They’re hoping that this brings final closure for all the parties involved.” Gaetz has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. The Justice Department’s investigation ended last year with no charges against him. Gaetz’s political future is uncertain. He had abruptly resigned his congressional seat upon being selected as attorney general, a move seen as a way to shut down the ethics investigation into sexual misconduct allegations. He did win reelection in November for the new Congress, which convenes Jan. 3, 2025, but he said in his resignation letter last week to House Speaker Mike Johnson that he did not intend to take the oath of office. He transmitted a similar letter to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the state launched a special election process to fill the vacancy. Republicans on the House Ethics Committee declined this week to release the panel's findings, over objections from Democrats in a split vote. But the committee did agree to finish its work and is scheduled to meet again Dec. 5 to discuss the matter. As word of Gaetz's decision spread across the Capitol, Republican senators seemed divided. Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin, who served with Gaetz in the House, called it a “positive move." Maine Sen. Susan Collins said Gaetz “put country first and I am pleased with his decision.” Others said they had hoped Gaetz could have overhauled the department. Florida Sen. Rick Scott, a close ally of Trump, said he was “disappointed. I like Matt and I think he would have changed the way DOJ is run.” Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said he hoped that Trump will pick someone “equally as tenacious and equally as committed to rooting out and eliminating bias and politicization at the DOJ.” Gaetz is not the only Trump pick facing congressional scrutiny over past allegations. A detailed investigative police report made public Wednesday shows that a woman told police that she was sexually assaulted in 2017 by Hegseth, the former Fox News host now tapped to lead the Pentagon, after he took her phone, blocked the door to a California hotel room and refused to let her leave. “The matter was fully investigated and I was completely cleared,” Hegseth told reporters Thursday at the Capitol, where he was meeting with senators to build support for his nomination. Instead, she’ll stay behind and have surgery on the right foot she re-injured last week . “She’ll have the surgery and get back to working on her recovery,” Gophers coach Dawn Plitzuweit said. Plitzuweit said a decision on whether Braun will attempt to return this year is still pending. “It’s way too early to tell,” she said. The team’s leading scorer, Braun originally injured her right foot landing on an opponent in the fourth quarter of the Gophers game at Illinois on Jan. 28. She had surgery then and was lost until the Gophers began play in the WNIT tournament. But, after two games there, she tweaked the injury and missed the final three games . Last season it took about two months for Braun to return. It remains to be seen how her recovery goes this time, but Braun would be eligible for a medical redshirt should she miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season. The Gophers were 5-0 when Braun stepped wrong and re-injured the foot in the morning shootaround prior to the Nov. 20 game against Eastern Illinois. She has watched the last two games from the bench, wearing a walking boot. Since the start of the 2023-24 season the Gophers are 21-6 with Braun in the starting lineup, 6-10 without her. The Gophers have beaten both Eastern Illinois and Montana since Braun’s latest setback. Next up, they’ll play Houston on Friday in New Orleans.
