(AP) — When the San Francisco 49ers used a third-round pick to draft Jake Moody last year, the hope was it would settle their kicking position for years to come. A shaky second half to Moody's second season with San Francisco has put that into question headed to the offseason. Moody missed his sixth field goal in the past seven games last week, leading to questions about whether the 49ers will need to replace him or at least bring in competition for next season. Coach Kyle Shanahan expressed confidence in Moody on Thursday, attributing some of the struggles to a high ankle sprain he suffered in his kicking leg earlier in the season. “I still feel the same about him, that I believe he is going to be our guy," Shanahan said. “Everyone has got to perform and do things like that and I think he has had a tough year. ... I thought he was doing really well and then had a high ankle sprain to his kicking foot. Since he’s come back, he hasn’t been as consistent, obviously. But I think a lot of that probably has to do with that, just common-sense wise.” Moody got off to a strong start this season, making all six field goals he attempted in the season opener and going 13 for 14 before injuring his ankle while attempting to make a tackle on a kickoff return in Week 5. He missed three games and has struggled since he returned. He missed three field goals in first first game back at Tampa Bay, two more in the snow at Buffalo in Week 13 and then a 41-yarder last week against the Dolphins. “That’s the great thing about kicking is, you can be as talented as whoever and you can struggle,” Moody said. “I feel like this year, I’ve struggled. It doesn’t really waver my confidence or anything. I feel like, throughout my entire life, I’ve gone through struggles, I’ve gone through high points. The biggest thing is to just stay consistent, not change anything.” Moody had an up-and-down rookie season, making 21 of 25 field goals in the regular season and missing only one extra point. But he missed a potential game-winning kick in a loss at Cleveland and missed field goals in playoff wins against Green Bay and Detroit. Moody then made three field goals in the Super Bowl with two coming from more than 50 yards, including a go-ahead 53-yard kick late in the fourth quarter against Kansas City. But Moody also had an extra point blocked in that game. “I believe we’ve got the right guy and I think that eventually, I think he has shown that at times,” Shanahan said. "I thought he showed that at times his rookie year. I thought he showed that big time being 12 out of 13 to start this year. And I think he’ll show us all that in the future.” NOTES: The Niners placed LT Trent Williams on IR after his ankle injury hasn't healed as quickly as hoped. Shanahan didn't think there were any long-term issues. ... LB Dre Greenlaw (calf) will be shut down for the rest of the season after playing parts of two games in his return from a torn left Achilles tendon. ... OL Spencer Burford (calf) didn't practice but might be able to play this week. ... San Francisco has signed two OL this week, adding Matt Hennessy and Charlie Heck. ... RB Isaac Guerendo (hamstring, foot) was limited but appears on track to play this week. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

As the sprawling tent city begins taking shape on the sandy Sangam banks, the authorities are getting ready to welcome crores of pilgrims to the setup which is equipped with all the measures to meet any exigency, especially the fire incidents. Apart from special vehicles and other modern equipment, the Uttar Pradesh Fire and Emergency Services Department has now deployed high-tech four articulating water towers (AWTs) equipped with advanced features in the fair area to prevent and tackle fire incidents here, said officials. The AWTs are equipped with advanced technologies, including video and thermal imaging systems. In addition to conducting firefighting operations, the AWTs will play a crucial role in safeguarding the lives of firefighters, acting as a protective shield during high-risk incidents, they added. Features of AWT Mahakumbh-2025’s nodal fire officer, Pramod Sharma, stated that the Articulating Water Tower (AWT) is a modern firefighting vehicle specifically designed to tackle fires in multi-storey structures and large tents. The AWT made of four booms can conduct firefighting operations up to a height of 35 metres and a horizontal distance of 30 metres. It is equipped with advanced features, including video and thermal imaging cameras. These capabilities not only allow the AWT to carry out rescue operations and protect lives and property but also provide a shield for the safety of firefighters during high-risk operations, he added. Deputy director (fire services) Aman Sharma said that to make Mahakumbh a fire-accident-free zone, a budget of ₹ 66.75 crore has been allocated to the department, in addition to the department’s budget of ₹ 64.73 crore. This brings the total expenditure for fire protection measures at the Mahakumbh Mela to ₹ 131.48 crore. The process of deploying fire safety vehicles and equipment in the fair area has already begun. Over 351 fire-fighting vehicles of various types, more than 2,000 trained personnel, over 50 fire stations, and 20 fire posts are being deployed for the Mahakumbh. Additionally, each Akhara’s tent will be equipped with fire-fighting equipment, he added.SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Bringing over 15 years of coaching experience at all levels of NCAA soccer, John Ciano has been named the next head coach of the Union College men’s soccer team, Director of Athletics Jim McLaughlin ’93 announced on Thursday via press release. “We are thrilled to welcome John Ciano to Union as the next head coach of our men’s soccer program,” McLaughlin said. “John stood out among a highly qualified candidate pool with his positive attitude, his connections to the Capital Region, and his track record of success at all levels of college soccer. “His enthusiasm for the role and dedication to the success of his student-athletes both on and off the field will help to advance our men’s soccer program,” he continued. “I look forward to welcoming John to campus and seeing the impact he can have beginning next season.” “I want to thank Director of Athletics Jim McLaughlin, Associate Director of Athletics Beth Tiffany and the rest of the search committee for allowing me the opportunity to lead the men’s soccer program at Union,” said Ciano. “As soon as I stepped on campus, I could tell right away that Union is a special place. I feel truly blessed and grateful to be associated with such a prestigious institution and hope to build a program that our team, school, and alumni can be proud of.” Ciano brings a wide range of collegiate coaching experience to Union, having coached at all three levels of the NCAA in both head and assistant coaching roles over the last 16 years. He comes to Schenectady from St. John’s University, where he has served as an assistant coach for the last two seasons. In 2024, the Red Storm earned a share of their first BIG EAST East Division regular-season title and reached the conference semifinals, the team’s second straight postseason appearance. He previously spent one year at Stony Brook University, serving as assistant coach while also taking part in the United Soccer Coaches Coach Credentialing Program. Ciano is no stranger to the Capital Region, having spent six years as the head coach at Division II College of Saint Rose from 2016-21. The Golden Knights posted a 45-38-11 (.537) record in his time in Albany, including a stretch of four straight winning seasons for a program that had just one season over .500 throughout its first 36 years. He coached the team to the only two 10-win seasons at the school, concluding with a 10-6-2 campaign in 2021 that saw the team earn its highest finish in the Northeast-10 Conference regular-season standings and receive votes in the United Soccer Coaches national poll for the first time ever. His 2019 team also reached the 10-win plateau, earned the first postseason win in program annals, and reached the NE-10 Championship game for the first time ever. Ciano left the school with the highest winning percentage in program history by more than 200 percentage points. “The Capital Region has always held a special place in my heart. I fell in love with the community and the sense of pride that was regularly on display when I spent nine years in the area,” Ciano added. “I am really excited to reconnect with old friends, establish new relationships, and build a high achieving program on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.” Prior to his time at Saint Rose, Ciano saw success over a combined five seasons as an assistant coach at the Division I level with Siena College and New Jersey Institute of Technology. In three seasons at Siena from 2013-15, Ciano served as recruiting coordinator for the Saints and helped the squad to 25 wins and a pair of MAAC Tournament appearances, including a 10-8-2 record in 2014 that remains the second-highest win total in a season in program history. In the second season of his two-year stint with NJIT (2011-12), the Highlanders produced the most wins in their Division I history. Ciano began his collegiate coaching tenure at Division III Manhattanville College (2009-10), where he helped guide the Valiants to a combined 24-11-2 record and a MAC Freedom regular-season title in 2009. As an undergraduate, Ciano was a four-year starter in goal between his time at Central Connecticut State University and Manhattan College, starting 54-of-55 games in one year with the Blue Devils and three years with the Jaspers. He graduated from Manhattan in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. Ciano takes over a Union side that posted a 6-8-5 record during the 2024 season under interim head coach Anthony Scaravillo, averaging under one goal conceded per game and allowing one goal or fewer in 15-of-19 outings. Five of the team’s losses came by one goal, including a pair to nationally ranked opponents. “I would like to thank Anthony for his stewardship of the program this season,” McLaughlin added. “The Union men’s soccer program is in a good position for future success and I look forward to seeing the team back on the field in the fall.”

ET Year-end Special Reads Corporate Kalesh: Top family disputes of India Inc in 2024 The world of business lost these eminent people in 2024 Fast, faster, fastest: How 2024 put more speed into your shopping The dam is approved to be built on Yarlung Tsangpo river, which becomes Brahmaputra when it enters India. Located near Arunachal Pradesh, the project raises geopolitical, environmental, and seismic concerns. The building of the dam presents unprecedented engineering challenges as the area is seismologically vulnerable. Total investment in the dam could exceed 1 trillion yuan, or $137 billion, according to a report in Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post (SCMP). The project may not adversely impact Brahmaputra in a big way but may reduce flow of water in the river, according to experts who have studied China for decades. India had earlier expressed concerns about the project, which could affect millions in downstream population centres in India and Bangladesh. The plan was initiated in the 14th Five Year Plan of China and President Xi Jinping referred to construction of a mega dam during his Tibet visit in 2021. "The project is expected to generate nearly 300 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually. By contrast, the Three Gorges Dam, which now has the world's largest installed capacity, was designed to produce 88.2 billion kWh," according to SCMP.
