The Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets agreed on a deal earlier today, sending Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton to the Lakers for D'Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis, and three second-round picks. This is the second major mid-season trade of the 24-25 campaign, with the Lakers getting this deal done just before the new year to add major reinforcements to their roster. This deal was straightforward with both teams getting two players with the Nets getting three second-round picks to make up for the value deficit. But who won this deal? Let's analyze and find out. Los Angeles Lakers Lakers Receive: Dorian Finney-Smith, Shake Milton Grade: A This deal can't be looked at as anything but a win for the Lakers. Fans and critics have been begging the Lakers to stop hoarding their future assets and try to go all-in on the final years of LeBron James and Anthony Davis . Despite their unspectacular roster, the Lakers have gone 18-13 to open the season and currently sit No. 5 in the West. This is a playoff-caliber franchise that just added two rotational players. Finney-Smith is averaging 10.4 points and 4.6 rebounds this season, shooting 43.5% from three. He comes into the Lakers as the team's best shooter while potentially being their second-best defender behind Anthony Davis. He's been a career-long rotational player and proved his winning impact over the first few years of Luka Doncic's Dallas Mavericks tenure, playing a crucial role in leading the franchise to the Western Conference Finals in 2022. Milton is averaging 7.4 points this season but has put up 12.6 points and 3.8 assists in the last five games after Dennis Schroder's departure opened up more minutes for him on the Nets. He's a two-way guard who won't have the offensive peaks that Russell brings but could contribute defensively and could be incredibly useful in the Lakers guard rotation behind Gabe Vincent. Giving up three second-round picks isn't a big deal in this trade. The Warriors gave the same to land Schroder, who was more productive in Brooklyn but joined a Warriors team with other available guards as well. Finney-Smith fills a bigger need and won't need to be forced into the starting five as his presence will be needed in the frontcourt. The Denver Nuggets gave up three second-rounders in the summer to salary dump Reggie Jackson, so the pick return shouldn't be a sore spot for LA. This is a win all around for the Lakers, with even JJ Redick having been a big fan of Finney-Smith for years, who is a former teammate. This partnership should be fruitful, as long as people don't overreact when the 31-year-old forward has a shooting slump. Brooklyn Nets Nets Receive: D'Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis, 2025 Second-Round Pick (LAL), 2030 Second-Round Pick (LAL), 2031 Second-Round Pick (LAL) Grade: B The Brooklyn Nets needed to move off their win-now veterans as their tanking season has been better than expected, with the franchise having a 12-20 record. They need to get worse and quickly to ensure they have a shot at landing Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, or Ace Bailey after their surprisingly good start to the season. D'Angelo Russell returns to the team he once was an All-Star for in a down season where he's averaging 12.4 points and 4.7 assists. Russell is on an expiring $18 million contract, so this also adds more cap space for the franchise this summer if they choose to let him walk. It could be a great situation for Russell, who gets to have a green light on a tanking franchise to rehabilitate his value before entering the market in the summer. Maxwell Lewis was a 2022 second-round pick by the Lakers who hasn't been able to crack into the team's rotation due to his inconsistent offensive abilities. However, Lewis was a high-potential low-floor prospect, so the Nets have a solid shot at building up his value before potentially trading him in the future or making him a long-term member of their rebuild. The reason this is a better deal for the Lakers than the Nets is purely in the return the franchises got. The grade could improve for the Nets if this deal makes them bad enough to secure a top-three pick in the 2025 Draft but the players and picks themselves don't seem to be great. Maybe if Brooklyn held onto Dorian until February, some team could panic and offer them a first-round pick for his services. In addition, the Memphis Grizzlies had put a lottery-protected first-round pick on the table , but their insistence that Brooklyn send them their second-round pick from this season killed the hopes of a deal. That's fine, as the Lakers offer is better because it might have no long-term adverse effects on the franchise. It's just that, it doesn't look like this deal is inherently positive from an assets POV unless they can tank far enough. The new Apple 15-inch Macbook Air is displayed during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference on ... [+] June 05, 2023 (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images) From the darling of Cupertino and the glory of taking the first step into a brave new world to a late-arriving afterthought, Apple’s MacBook Air has seen the highs and lows of the technology rollercoaster since 2020. The latest details on the upcoming M4 MacBook Air show that the consumer laptop isn’t returning to the highs for some time. When Is The Next MacBook Air Launching? Apple has long been expected to announce the next MacBook Air during the first quarter of 2025, and the assumption has been on a March release to tie in with the next wave of Apple Intelligence software and the launch of the fourth generation of the iPhone SE . Also on the launch docket are the iPad 11, AirTag 2 and iPad Air. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has suggested some tweaks to the timing, and it’s the final phrase that will attract the Mac community’s attention: “New entry level iPads (J481 and J482) are coming in the spring. iPhone SE, new iPad Air are on the same general timeline. The M4 MacBook Air will be earlier." How Will Apple Launch The Next MacBook Air? In the last few years, Apple has seen a rise in the number of products launched by press releases. While in-person events take place for the big-ticket items, and smaller online presentations have brought together the community for a shared experience, an increasing number of products are seen as either minor updates or not part of the current storyline Apple is telling. With the MacBook Air launching earlier than the iPhone SE and ahead of the next Apple Intelligence update, this points to a press release launch and Apple pushing its consumer laptops further into the background. Google’s Gmail Upgrade—Why You Need A New Email Address In 2025 Urgent New Gmail Security Warning For Billions As Attacks Continue FinCEN Extends Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) Reporting Deadline At one point, the MacBook Air sat on the beeling edge. With the move away from the Intel-based x86 technology across the Mac platform, the MacBook Air was chosen as the launch platform for the M1 Apple Silicon chipset. That launch in late 2020 upended the consumer laptop market with the increased performance, lower thermal characteristics, and improved battery life that the ARM-based chipset offered. Arguably, it’s only in 2024 that the Windows platform has leveraged the ARM advantage with this year’s Snapdragon X series. How Will Apple Position The MacBook Air? Apple Silicon continues to advance , but the MacBook Air is no longer given the standard to carry . The Mac launch of the M4 series was handed to the professionally-focused MacBook Pro in October 2024, and not a single MacBook Air was spotted. Even then, the Mac community could easily hold a grudge as Tim Cook’s team had given the all-important and symbolic “first flight” of the M4 to that summer’s iPad Pro. The MacBook Air will pick up the M4 technology nearly nine months after it first arrived in Apple’s tablet. That will be a welcome boost in the specifications, especially for consumers using their Mac for content creation, but Apple’s approach to the MacBook Air suggests a strategy of taking it away from the cutting edge and creating an artificial distance between its capabilities and that of the tablet alternative and the lust of a more powerful macOS laptop. The MacBook Air is no longer a player on Apple’s stage. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A lopsided, shutout loss has left the beat-up New Orleans Saints limping into the final two games of a lost season — and into a rather cloudy future beyond that. Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi figured that a visit to playoff-bound Green Bay would be a tall order for his injury-riddled squad, whose prominent missing players included starters at quarterback, running back and receiver. And when New Orleans’ mostly healthy defensive front struggled against a Packers ground game led by running back Josh Jacobs, the rout was on. Nothing “stuck out on film other than a lack of execution and lack of playmaking,” Rizzi said Tuesday after reviewing video of Monday night’s 34-0 loss at Green Bay . “We played against a playoff team, at their place, that has very few holes on their team,” Rizzi added. “It was a little bit of a perfect storm.” Rizzi, a special teams coordinator who has made no secret that he sees his eight-game interim stint as an opportunity to further his head-coaching ambitions, has two more games left in what has been an up-and-down audition. The Saints are 3-3 on his watch, which includes one of New Orleans’ most lopsided losses since the turn of the century. RELATED COVERAGE Titans QB Mason Rudolph gets another chance at starting, this time against the Jags Texans get visit from longtime foe Derrick Henry when the Ravens visit on Christmas Day Falcons drafting Penix no longer a head-scratcher with rookie QB shining in place of benched Cousins With the playoffs unattainable, and with a lot of reserves pressed into service, the final two weeks will serve primarily as a player-evaluation period heading into the offseason, when there are bound to be myriad changes on the roster and perhaps the coaching staff. Rizzi said the Saints, realistically, have been in evaluation mode “for the last month or so,” but added that there maybe be additional young or practice-squad players getting longer looks in the final two games. “My big thing this week is to see how we can respond,” Rizzi said. “We’re going to find out a lot about a lot of people.” What’s working Of the Saints’ four punts, three were inside the Green Bay 20 and New Orleans did not allow a single punt return yard. The punt team might have been the only unit that executed its job (even the kickoff unit allowed a 38-yard return). What needs help The Saints had trouble protecting the quarterback (three sacks) and protecting the football (two turnovers). They couldn’t run the ball (67 yards). They couldn’t stop the run (188 yards allowed). They couldn’t pass the ball consistently (129 yards) or stop the pass when they needed to. As former Saints coach Jim Mora once said, they couldn’t do “ diddly poo .” Although rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler largely struggled and was responsible for both New Orleans turnovers, he had enough highlights — including a jumping, first-down pass on third-and-long — to keep him penciled in as the starter if the injured Derek Carr remains unable to play, Rizzi said. “It was definitely a performance where we got to take the good with the bad,” Rizzi said. “We’ve got to get rid of those negative plays.” Stock up New Orleans native Foster Moreau has emerged as one of the Saints’ most reliable offensive players. The sixth-year NFL tight end made two catches for a team-high 33 yards on Monday night, giving him 25 catches for 335 yards this season. His four TDs receiving entering the game remain tied for the team lead. Stock down Rizzi was riding high after two wins to start his interim term as head coach, but Monday night’s ugly loss is the club’s third in four games and took a lot of luster off his candidacy for a longer-term appointment. Injury report Center Erik McCoy left the game with an elbow injury, while guard Lucas Patrick hurt his knee in the closing minutes. Rizzi said McCoy won’t need surgery but could miss the rest of the season. The coach said Patrick needs more tests but is not expected to play again this season. While the chances of Carr (non-throwing, left hand) or top running back Alvin Kamara (groin) playing again this season appear slim, the Saints have declined to rule that out. Rizzi said Carr is getting closer to being able to play and wants the opportunity to go against his former team, the Las Vegas Raiders. Meanwhile, Rizzi said Kamara “is working his tail off to try to come back” this season. “Alvin told me this morning, in my office, that he really would like to play again,” Rizzi said. Key number 24 — The number of years since the Saints suffered a more lopsided shutout loss, 38-0 against San Francisco in 2002. Up next The Saints’ home finale against lowly Las Vegas will be an anticlimactic affair bound to generate a level of fan interest similar to, if not less than, a preseason game. But the game will be important to the current regime, which needs victories in each of the club’s final two games to avoid the franchise’s worst record since it was displaced by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and went 3-13. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has died. He was 100 years old. He passed away Dec. 29 at his home in Plains, Georgia, his charity the Carter Center announced on X , formerly Twitter. Carter, the oldest living U.S. president of all time, died less than three months after his 100th birthday and more than a year after the Carter Center said he had opted to receive hospice care at home with his family after "a series of short hospital stays." The Democratic leader is survived by his four children: John William "Jack" Carter , James E. "Chip" Carter III , Donnel Jeffrey "Jeff" Carter and Amy Carter . Carter was preceded in death by his wife of more than 75 years, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter , who died in November 2023 at age 96. Carter, the 39th president, was born in Georgia in 1924. He went on to attend Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, before receiving a degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946, according to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum . The same year, he married Rosalynn, and together they operated Carter's Warehouse, a seed and farm store in Georgia. Carter's political career took off in 1962, when he was elected to the Georgia Senate, later becoming governor of the Peach State in 1971. Five years later, he was elected president of the United States, during which he oversaw several international diplomacy efforts, including the Panama Canal treaties, the Camp David Accords and the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union. "We have learned that 'more' is not necessarily 'better,' that even our great nation has its recognized limits, and that we can neither answer all questions nor solve all problems," he said in his inauguration speech. "We cannot afford to do everything, nor can we afford to lack boldness as we meet the future. So, together, in a spirit of individual sacrifice for the common good, we must simply do our best." Following his time in the White House, he turned his attention to education. Carter became a professor at Emory University in Atlanta in the 1980s, founding The Carter Center and authoring more than 30 books throughout his life. The politician has been recognized for his compassion in his career and beyond. After leaving the presidency, he and his wife sought to create a better life for people not just in the U.S., but across the globe, through the Carter Center. This work was recognized in 2002, when the former peanut farmer was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Moreover, Carter is often remembered for his contributions to the start of the clean energy movement. During his presidency, Carter created the Department of Energy and introduced tax incentives for energy-friendly home insulation and for installing solar panels. As Carter put it in his inauguration speech, "The passion for freedom is on the rise. Tapping this new spirit, there can be no nobler nor more ambitious task for America to undertake on this day of a new beginning than to help shape a just and peaceful world that is truly humane." Look back at Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter's love story... Young Love A photo from Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter 's earliest days together as a young naval officer and his bride stands out at the Plains High School Jimmy Carter National Historical Park in their Georgia hometown. The Carters could share a private moment anywhere, even in front of thousands of people at the Democratic National Convention in 1976. Along with his mother, Jimmy and Rosalynn were joined at the DNC here by daughter Amy Lynn Carter , their eldest son, John William "Jack" Carter , and third son Donnel Jeffrey "Jeff" Carter with his wife Annette Davis . The couple, watching the returns with family in Atlanta, embraced on Election Night in 1976 upon finding out that Carter was going to be the 39th president of the United States. The president and first lady put their best feet forward at a series of inaugural balls following Jimmy's swearing-in on Jan. 20, 1977. Rosalynn raised some eyebrows by recycling the same Mary Matise for Jimmae gown she wore to her husband's 1971 gubernatorial inauguration balls, but she had her husband's full support, Jimmy writing in A Full Life that he was "very proud of her beauty and grace." Daughter Amy Lynn Carter was 9 when she and her Siamese cat Misty Malarky Ying Yang and dog Grits moved into the White House in January 1977. Jimmy was the first sitting president since Theodore Roosevelt (and no president has done it since) to send his child to public school, enrolling Amy at Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School in Washington, D.C. But if there had been an Internet, this would have been a meme: During his one debate with Republican challenger Ronald Reagan in October 1980, President Carter invoked his then-13-year-old when he said, "I had a discussion the other day with my daughter Amy before I came here to ask me what the important issue was. She said she thought nuclear weaponry and the control of nuclear arms." Let's just say, the other side had a little fun with that, with Reagan supporters in Milwaukee chanting "Amy! Amy!" two days later when the candidate delivered a speech. "I remember when Patti and Ron were tiny kids," the future 36th president quipped. "We used to talk about nuclear power." "Ask Amy" bumper stickers became a quick moneymaker for Republican groups, and she even made The Tonight Show , host Johnny Carson joking, "This will be a significant monologue because I asked Amy Carter what she thought were the most important issues to make jokes about." The Carters may have had a young daughter but they also had three daughters-in-law by the time Jimmy became president, and most of the family moved to Washington. Jack and wife Juliette "Judy" Langford stayed in Georgia, where they had welcomed son Jason James Carter on Aug. 7, 1975, and where daughter Sarah Rosemary would be born Dec. 19, 1978. (After their divorce, Jack married mother of two Elizabeth Brasfield on May 15, 1992.) The Carters' second son, James Earl "Chip" Carter III , worked for the Democratic National Committee in Washington while his dad was in office and moved into the White House with wife Caron Griffin , who was eight months pregnant on Inauguration Day. Still, she strolled along the parade route with the rest of the family for a few blocks when the president and first lady made the unprecedented move to walk the whole mile and a half from the Capitol to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. "People along the parade route, when they saw that we were walking, began to cheer and weep," Jimmy later wrote , "and it was an emotional experience for us as well." Chip and Caron's son, James Earl Carter IV , was born Feb. 25, 1977. That August it was announced that Chip was returning to Plains but his wife and child would be staying with the first family, and he and Caron confirmed their separation in 1978. Chip later married Ginger Hodges , with whom he welcomed daughter Margaret Alicia Carter on Sept. 23, 1987. Chip's been married to third wife Becky Payne since 2001. The Carters' third son, Jeff, married his college sweetheart Annette Davis on April 6, 1975, and they moved into the White House, too, while he was attending George Washington University. Jeff and Annette eventually had three sons, Joshua Jeffrey (b. 1984), Jeremy Davis (1987-2015) and James Carlton (b. 1991), and were together until her death on Sept. 19, 2021. Rosalynn was her husband's number-one confidante when he was president—and forever after. "It's a full partnership," Carter told the AP in 2021 of his then-75-year marriage. Jimmy and Rosalyn remain in sync at the White House in January 1979. Amy, here with her dad in 1995, is mom to son Hugo , born in 1999, with first husband James Gregory Wentzel , and son Errol Carter Kelly with her spouse since 2007, John Joseph "Jay" Kelly . The house Jimmy and Rosalynn built in 1961 and have lived in ever since remained the gathering spot for the whole family. The Carters are also great-grandparents to Jason's sons, Henry and Thomas , with his wife Kate ; Sarah's daughter, Josephine , with husband Brendan Keith Murphy ; Margaret's daughter, Alicia , with husband Harold Edward Carter ; Joshua's sons, Charles and Jonathan , with wife Sarah ; and James' daughter, Rayna Rose , with wife Anna . It's no wonder they earned the nickname "first lovebirds." Jimmy knew a thing or two about keeping the peace. "Every day there needs to be reconciliation and communication between the two spouses," the winner of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize told the AP. "We don't go to sleep with some remaining differences between us." "Jimmy and I are always looking for things to do together," Rosalynn said, but "each [spouse] should have some space. That's really important." "One of the things Jesus taught was: If you have any talents, try to utilize them for the benefit of others," Jimmy told People in 2019, discussing the nearly four decades he and his wife had spent volunteering and advocating for Habitat for Humanity. "That's what Rosa and I have both tried to do." Though their physical involvement in construction grew more limited with time, the Carters became synonymous with the organization, which builds affordable housing and offers no-interest mortgages to buyers who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford a home. "I think both mine and Rosa's minds are almost as good as they used to be, we just have limited capability on stamina and strength," Jimmy said. "But we still try to stay busy and do a good job at what we do." They got so adept at wielding tools over the years, they knocked down their own bedroom wall during a later-in-life home renovation in Plains. "By that time," Rosalynn told the Washington Post in 2018, "we had worked with Habitat so much that it was just second-nature." "It's hard to live until you're 95 years old," Jimmy told People in 2019. "I think the best explanation for that is to marry the best spouse: someone who will take care of you and engage and do things to challenge you and keep you alive and interested in life."

DUP minister rejected suggestion licensing laws could be relaxed for jubileeWhat to Watch for: 5 Must-Have Elements in Crypto WhitepapersSAIC-Volkswagen plans to launch three new models in 2026 to reclaim the Chinese market Recently, Chinese media reported that the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture plans to launch three new models in the Chinese market in 2026 to achieve a comeback. The three models are internally codenamed A, B, and C, covering the BEV, EREV, and PHEV market segments. Specifically, both models A and B are developed by SAIC . A is a PHEV sedan modified based on the already launched Roewe D7 . B is a mid-to-high-end EREV SUV modified based on one of IM Motors’ unreleased vehicles (internal codename S31L). On the other hand, C is developed by Volkswagen , positioned as a pure electric SUV based on the CEA (China Electrical Architecture) platform jointedly built by Xpeng and Volkswagen. All three models will adopt Volkswagen’s VW logo rather than adopting a new brand strategy. This is not the first time such news broke out. The news that SAIC-Volkswagen will launch PHEVs and EREVs was already heard in April this year. At that time, some media reported that “Volkswagen will launch an EREV positioned as a B-class SUV, exclusively for the Chinese market and planned to go into production in 2026.” It seems that the B car is most likely the B-class SUV. Then on June 27, Volkswagen, SAIC, Volkswagen (China) Investment, Volkswagen (China) Technology, and SAIC-Volkswagen signed numerous technical cooperation agreements on SAIC Volkswagen’s new product projects. According to the agreement, Volkswagen will jointly develop three PHEV models and two BEV models with Chinese partners. For the first 11 months of 2024, SAIC-Volkswagen sold 1.049 million vehicles, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). In November, the joint venture sold 123,000 vehicles, up 5.9% year-on-year, with a market share of 5.1%, ranking seventh in automobile retail sales in China. At the same time, it’s worth pointing out that FAW-Volkswagen sold 147,000 vehicles in November, down 12% year-on-year, with a market share of 6.1%, ranking fourth. Source: SAIC-VW , Yiche , CPCA
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel unleashed its largest wave of airstrikes across Lebanon since agreeing to a ceasefire with Hezbollah last week, killing at least 11 people on Monday after the Lebanese militant group fired a volley of projectiles as a warning over what it said were Israeli truce violations . The projectiles were apparently the first time that Hezbollah took aim at Israeli forces after the 60-day ceasefire went into effect last Wednesday. The increasingly fragile truce aimed to end more than a year of war between Hezbollah and Israel — part of a wider regional conflict sparked by the devastating Israel-Hamas war in Gaza . In the United States, President-elect Donald Trump demanded the immediate release of Israeli hostages held by the Palestinian militant Hamas group in Gaza, saying on social media that if they are not freed before he takes office in January there would be “HELL TO PAY.” It was not immediately clear whether Trump was threatening to directly involve the U.S. military in Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. The U.S. has given Israel crucial military and diplomatic support throughout the nearly 15-month conflict. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said an Israeli airstrike on the southern village of Haris killed five people and wounded two while another airstrike on the village of Tallousa killed four and also wounded two. Israel's military carried out a string of airstrikes late Monday against what it said were Hezbollah fighters, infrastructure and rocket launchers across Lebanon, in response to Hezbollah firing two projectiles toward Mount Dov — a disputed Israeli-held territory known as Shebaa Farms in Lebanon where the borders of Lebanon, Syria, and Israel meet. Israel said the projectiles fell in open areas and no injuries were reported. Hezbollah said in a statement that it fired on an Israeli military position in the area as a “defensive and warning response” after what it called “repeated violations” of the ceasefire deal by Israel. It said complaints to mediators tasked with monitoring the ceasefire “were futile in stopping these violations.” Before the Hezbollah projectiles, Israeli carried out at least four airstrikes and an artillery barrage in southern Lebanon, including a drone strike that killed a person on a motorcycle, according to Lebanese state media. Another strike killed a corporal in the Lebanese security services. Israel has said its strikes are in response to unspecified Hezbollah violations, and that under the ceasefire deal it reserves the right to retaliate. Lebanon’s parliament speaker, Nabih Berri, accused Israel of violating the truce more than 50 times in recent days by launching airstrikes, demolishing homes near the border and violating Lebanon's airspace. Officials in the U.S. — which along with France helped broker the truce and heads a commission meant to monitor adherence to the deal — played down the significance of Israeli strikes. White House national security spokesman John Kirby said, “Largely speaking, the ceasefire is holding.” “We’ve gone from dozens of strikes down to one a day maybe two a day,” Kirby told reporters, referring to Israeli strikes. “We’re going to keep trying and see what we can do to get it down to zero.” Under the deal, Iran-backed Hezbollah has 60 days to withdraw its fighters and infrastructure from southern Lebanon. During that time, Israeli troops are also to withdraw to their side of the border. In a post on his Truth Social site, Trump called for Palestinian militants to free all of the roughly 100 Israeli hostages still held inside Gaza , around two-thirds of whom are believed to be alive. If not, Trump said, “Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied History of the United States of America. RELEASE THE HOSTAGES NOW!” Hours earlier, the Israeli government confirmed the death of Omer Neutra, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, whose body is still believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza, according to the Israeli government. The Biden administration is mounting a last-ditch effort to try to restart talks between Israel and Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office declined to comment on Trump's post though President Isaac Herzog welcomed it. In Gaza, meanwhile, alarm is mounting over increasing hunger. The amount of food allowed in by Israel has plunged over the past two months, compounded by a decision Sunday by the United Nations to halt aid deliveries from the main crossing into the territory because of the threat of armed gangs looting convoys. Experts have already warned of famine in the northernmost part of Gaza , which Israeli forces have almost completely isolated since early October, saying they're fighting regrouped Hamas militants there. Displaced families have set up tents surrounded by piles of garbage on the streets of Gaza City. Bilal Marouf, 55, said he and 11 family members fled the Israeli offensive “barefoot and naked.” “We had nothing. Hunger and thirst killed us, and we did not have a single shekel, nor clothes, nor a mattress, nor a blanket,” he said, speaking near his tent. Israel’s campaign in Gaza, triggered by Hamas’ Oct 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel, has driven almost the entire population of the territory from their homes. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians now live in squalid tent camps, relying on international aid. The Israeli military said it allowed 40 trucks carrying 600 tons of flour for the World Food Program to enter the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday night, as well as 16 other food trucks. Israel has said it is working to increase the flow of aid. November saw an increase in the average number of humanitarian trucks it let into Gaza, up to 77 daily from 57 the month before, according to official Israeli figures. But the levels are still nearly the lowest of the entire 15-month war. And the U.N. says less than half of that actually reaches Palestinians because Israeli military restrictions, fighting and robberies make it too dangerous to deliver the aid. The World Food Program was able to only deliver aid to some 300,000 Palestinians in November across the Gaza Strip due to ongoing Israeli military offensives and the looting of convoys, Carl Skau, WFP’s deputy executive director, said Monday. In a tent camp in the central Gaza town of Deir al-Balah, Palestinians lined up at makeshift mud ovens trying to buy a few loaves of flatbread for their families. With the price of flour mounting because of scarcity, the bakers — women displaced from further north — said they could bake less bread, and families could afford far less. “They divide them to their children, one loaf every day,” said one woman baker, Wafaa al-Attar.
