Job-training agency returns Orange election chief Gilzean’s $1.9M giftAuthored by Steve Watson via Modernity.news, Video streaming site Rumble has filed a lawsuit against the state of California in response to legislation forcing social media platforms to censor political speech. Rumble is being represented by The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which filed suit against AB 2655, aka the “Defending Democracy from Deepfake Deception Act of 2024,” in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, Sacramento Division. The legislation is Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom’s response to a deepfake satire video of Kamala Harris that was shared on X by Elon Musk among others. JUST IN: Elon Musk tells CA Governor Gavin Newsom to "Suggon Deeznutz" after Newsom threatened to change the law to make AI “ad” voices illegal. Newsom was upset over a parody video (below) that Musk shared on X. "Manipulating a voice in an “ad” like this one should be illegal.... pic.twitter.com/19MYrk21rr ADF stated in a press release that the law “deputizes” Rumble to restrict its user’s free speech, while another law, AB 2839, “Protecting Democracy Against Election Disinformation and Deepfakes,” uses vague standards to punish individuals posting political content about elections. “California’s war against political speech is censorship, plain and simple. We can’t trust the government to decide what is true in our online political debates,” said ADF Senior Counsel Phil Sechler. “Rumble is one of the few online voices stepping up against this trend of censorship while other platforms and sites cave to totalitarian regimes censoring Americans,” Sechler further urged. He added that “Rumble is standing for free speech even when it is hard. Other online platforms and media companies must see these laws for what they are — a threat to their existence.” Chris Pavlovski, Chairman and CEO of Rumble, further urged that “The very thought of the government judging the content of political speech, and then deciding whether it should be permitted, censored, or eliminated altogether is about the most chilling thing you could imagine.” “Rumble will always celebrate freedom and support creative independence, so we’re delighted to work with ADF to help protect lawful online expression,” Pavlovski asserted. The Democratic Party is pushing hard to enact laws that force censorship. As both Hillary and Bill Clinton have noted, its a response to them losing ‘total control’ over the free flow of information. * * * Your support is crucial in helping us defeat mass censorship. In a statement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Vawda reiterated his previous claims, saying, “I still stand by my statement that Khan’s life is in danger from Bibi, Gandapur, and their supporters.” Vawda further pointed to a tweet by former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Qasim Suri, as evidence of the threat. Suri, whom Vawda referred to as a “fugitive”, had posted a tweet suggesting that Khan had lost his mental stability, even implying that he was “mad.” “The first indication of the threat to Imran Khan’s life is the tweet from the absconding fugitive Qasim Suri, in which he started spreading the narrative that Khan has lost his mental balance,” Vawda said. The senator emphasised that the nation is now beginning to understand the implications of such statements and actions. “But we must protect Khan’s life and save the founder of PTI from these individuals,” Vawda stated. On the other hand, Aliya Khan, Imran Khan’s sister, publicly denounced Suri’s tweet, labelling it as baseless and irresponsible.

In 2020, a conspiracy theory spread across social media claiming that online home goods retailer Wayfair was involved in child trafficking . People claimed that odd pricing and certain product names were evidence of the theory. VERIFY reader Leslie emailed us to ask if Wayfair was ever involved in the sex trafficking of children. THE QUESTION Is Wayfair involved in the sex trafficking of children? THE SOURCES National Center on Sexual Exploitation DeliverFund , a nonprofit intelligence agency that uses technology to help law enforcement fight human trafficking Polaris , organization that operates the U.S. National Human Trafficking hotline Original VERIFY reporting in 2020 Statement from Wayfair to the BBC in 2020 THE ANSWER No, there is no evidence to support the claims that Wayfair was involved in the sex trafficking of children. WHAT WE FOUND When the conspiracy theory first spread in 2020, people on social media pointed to Wayfair products with strange names and disproportionately high prices as proof that the online furniture store was involved in child trafficking. These products included a “Samiyah Storage Cabinet” priced at over $14,000 and a “Duplessis Zodiac Sign Astrological Constellation Personalized Throw Pillow” at $9,999. At the time, people claimed that these products shared the names of girls that were reported missing. The theory followed that the products had high prices because they were fronts for selling the missing girls. Wayfair told the BBC in 2020 that the prices were accurate for the industrial grade cabinets and were the result of a glitch in the case of the pillows. The viral social media posts frequently linked products to girls who were no longer missing. Multiple anti-trafficking groups said the claims were unproven and likely false. “We believe that the accusations being leveled against Wayfair regarding sex trafficking are lacking credibility in significant ways and, in many places, demonstrably false,” the National Center on Sexual Exploitation said at the time. In 2020, VERIFY found that the family of Samara Duplessis, a missing girl purportedly linked to the overpriced pillows, reported she was back home a couple of months before the Wayfair conspiracy became widespread. When VERIFY searched Wayfair for “Duplessis” products in 2020, we found the name attached to a number of different items that were considerably less expensive than the pillow. When VERIFY searched Wayfair’s site again on Dec. 2, 2024, we found it’s using the “Duplessis” name for at least one product, a rug selling for $144.99 , years after the missing girl was found. As for the reference to the cabinets in the original rumors, people claimed that there was a missing teenager from Ohio named Samiyah, too. But VERIFY was unable to find any evidence that a girl by that name was missing, and a teenager some people believed to be Samiyah refuted that she was missing in a video posted to her Facebook account. Wayfair told the BBC in 2020 that the expensive cabinets were “industrial size,” meant for business or commercial use and that the $14,000 price point was accurate. “We have temporarily removed the products from our site to rename them and to provide a more in-depth description and photos that accurately depict the product to clarify the price point,” Wayfair told the BBC in 2020. Another example of a missing teenager’s name possibly matching a Wayfair product was Mary Durrett to a Durrett coffee table. But she went missing in 2017 and was found safe two days after she was first reported missing. The claim connecting her to the coffee table listing was posted three years later. Many anti-trafficking organizations addressed the rumors in 2020. They all said the claims lacked credibility. “We identified early on that this was a likely hoax or a case of overexuberance by someone who did not have the expertise and data-driven approach that DeliverFund has,” Michael Fullilove, chief of operations for DeliverFund , a nonprofit intelligence agency that uses technology to help law enforcement fight human trafficking, said in 2020. “Based on the original source of the information, we were able to use open source intelligence techniques to determine that it was highly unlikely that the trafficking of children was taking place through the sale of expensive items on Wayfair,” Fullilove said. Polaris , which operates the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline, said the claims were unsubstantiated and did more harm than good. People overwhelmed the hotline to make reports related to the conspiracy, increasing wait times and potentially denying trafficking victims from reaching the hotline. The theory also resulted in harassment and privacy intrusions of people mistakenly believed to be victims, as well as broad sharing of online sexual abuse material of real victims never connected to the Wayfair conspiracy, Polaris said. Polaris pointed out that trafficking is rarely perpetrated by a total stranger who kidnaps children and is instead usually perpetrated by people the victims know or even love and trust. Scenarios where the trafficker locks up or imprisons the victim with literal shackles make up a minority of trafficking cases despite it being the common public perception of trafficking, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation said. Traffickers usually groom their victims and keep them captive through forms of psychological abuse, manipulation and coercion that can be difficult to identify. There are real cases in which sex trafficking is perpetrated online, usually through prostitution sites and pornography websites, according to the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation said in 2020 that traffickers were increasingly using “popular social media apps such as Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok to identify, groom and exploit children in the online space.” Anti-trafficking organizations say that sharing viral, unsubstantiated trafficking rumors online is generally unhelpful to trafficking victims. What’s more helpful, these organizations say , is to learn how to identify real, common cases of trafficking to spot victims who need help. CLEVELAND — Tyler Huntley stepped in for Tua Tagovailoa and stepped up for the Dolphins. Miami still has a playoff pulse. Huntley scrambled for a touchdown and threw for one while starting for the injured Tagovailoa, and the Dolphins stayed in the AFC wild-card race heading into their season finale with a 20-3 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. With Tagovailoa sidelined by a hip injury, the backup known as “Snoop” did enough for the Dolphins (8-8). “This was not ideal in any way, shape or form,” said Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel, adding he held out hope up until just before kickoff that Tagovailoa might play. “But it was a tremendous outing for (Huntley). It showed how far Snoop has come.” Miami needs to win next weekend at the New York Jets and hope the Denver Broncos lose at home to Kansas City to get a postseason berth. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and many of the top-seeded Chiefs’ starters are expected to rest. “For the first time in my life, I’m about to be a huge Chiefs fan,” Dolphins defensive tackle Calais Campbell said. “It might not happen (making the playoffs), but we have an opportunity. And if it does happen, look out, we’re coming.” Tagovailoa’s status for next week is unclear, but Huntley showed he can get the job done if necessary. He finished 22 of 26 for 225 yards and didn’t have any turnovers in his fourth start this season. The 26-year-old was with Cleveland in training camp before being released in August. Huntley downplayed any thought he was seeking revenge against the Browns. “When I left, that was it,” said Huntley, who was signed by Miami in September when Tagovailoa suffered his latest concussion. “For him to get cut, it was our blessing picking him up,” Campbell said. Tagovailoa was limited in practice all week with the hip injury suffered two weeks ago against Houston. McDaniel said “it’s impossible” to know whether Tagovailoa will be available to face the Jets. “From a medical perspective, it was not an option for him to play today,” McDaniel said. Tagovailoa spent the afternoon on the sideline in sweats, encouraging Huntley and his other teammates. The quarterback was not available for interviews afterward. The Browns (3-13) dropped their fifth straight, finished 2-6 at home and could be headed toward another offseason of major turnover. They improved their draft position for 2025, when they will likely look for a quarterback. “I have no comment on that,” said Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, whose job appears safe despite the team’s regression after making the playoffs last season. Dorian Thompson-Robinson isn’t the long-term answer. In his second straight start, the second-year QB completed 24 of 47 passes for 170 yards. He also threw an interception, lost a fumble and was flagged three times for intentional grounding. “We were harassing him all day,” Campbell said. Both offenses had issues in windy and wet conditions, but Huntley handled them better. He ran for a 13-yard touchdown early in the third quarter to put the Dolphins up 13-3. After rolling right, Huntley made several precise cuts as he picked his way down the sideline and into the end zone. “He was just making plays,” said receiver Tyreek Hill, who had nine catches for 105 yards. Hill said Tagovailoa pushed as hard as possible to play. “Basically, it was the staff trying to save a player from himself,” Hill said. The Browns had a chance to cut into the lead, but Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey broke up Thompson-Robinson’s fourth-and-goal pass toward Jerry Jeudy in the end zone. Huntley connected with tight end Jonnu Smith on a 7-yard TD with 3:38 left. Miami’s Jason Sanders kicked field goals of 54 and 39 yards. He’s made a franchise-best 25 in a row, the streak helped by a friendly bounce off the crossbar on his 54-yarder in the first quarter. The Browns tied it when Dustin Hopkins, who was benched for a game during a recent slump, kicked a 25-yard field goal. Browns defensive end Myles Garrett celebrated his 29th birthday with a pair of sacks. Last season’s defensive player of the year has 14 this season, making him the first player in league history to get that many four years in a row. Early lead, and winning streak, slip away from Wild in loss to OttawaA tasty Thanksgiving turkey meal is usually followed by days (or weeks) of sandwiches and other leftovers. But how long should you cling to those remnants of the holiday spread? Preparing, serving and storing food safely is key to staving off outbreaks of some forms of food poisoning that happen more frequently in November and December, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And the National Fire Protection Association calls Thanksgiving the "peak day" for home cooking fires. Here is what you need to know about Thanksgiving and food safety. The simplest way to thaw a frozen turkey is in the refrigerator, said Donald Schaffner, a microbiologist at Rutgers University where he is chair of the department of food science. "A good rule of thumb is 24 hours for every 4-to-5 pounds of turkey," he said. "If you use cold water thawing, you should allow 30 minutes per pound of turkey and change the water about every 30 minutes ... you should do this with the turkey in its original packaging." Schaffner said keeping the bird in its original packaging can prevent pathogenic bacteria on the surface of the turkey from moving around the kitchen and sink. As turkey fryers have become more popular, so have burns to people using them around Thanksgiving, said Dr. Robert Schwaner, medical director of the department of emergency medicine at Stony Brook University Hospital. One big mistake is dropping a frozen turkey into the oil-filled fryer, which can result in flames shooting up from the vat. "People get burned all the time," Schwaner said. "When you put the turkey in the vat, people splash themselves but if there is any frozen water, the vat will boil over." He said other mistakes people make include putting the fryer too close to a house or filling it with too much oil. No, Schaffner said. "It’s not going to remove that many germs and it’s going to take the germs and spread them around the rest of the kitchen." If you don’t already have one, invest in a tip sensitive digital thermometer, he said. You should stick it into the thickest part of the turkey and make sure it’s at least 165 degrees. Raw turkey can have bacteria such as salmonella, C. perfringens and campylobacter which can cause vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms of food poisoning, according to the CDC. C. perfringens can also be found in foods that have been cooked but left out and not refrigerated. Symptoms may not appear for 24 or 48 hours after ingesting food contaminated with the bacteria. The rule of thumb is no more than two hours, starting when the food is removed from the stove and brought to the table, Schaffner said. Fill containers with only about 2 inches of food and cover them lightly with a lid or parchment paper before putting them in the refrigerator, Schaffner said, because this allows the heat to escape and food to cool down. You should try to eat refrigerated leftovers in about three days. Frozen leftovers will last longer but may lose some flavor. He said people interested in more information should go to FoodSafety.gov , a government website that has extensive information on cooking temperatures, food preparation and storage.
