“BRAIN rot” has been voted word of the year after its usage rocketed among Gen Z. The condition, which is not medically recognised, can be caused by watching addictive memes and videos on social media for hours, experts say. It triumphed in a poll of more than 37,000 people by Oxford University Press, which defined it as the perceived deterioration of a person’s intellectual state, especially via over consumption of trivial, mainly online, material. It was first recorded by US writer Henry David Thoreau in 1854, where he criticised society’s tendency to devalue complex ideas. But it has taken on a new significance due to the rise of social media video apps such as TikTok . Its usage rose by 230 per cent from 2023 to 2024, particularly among Gen Z and younger communities. READ MORE UK NEWS Casper Grathwohl, of Oxford Languages, said: “‘Brain rot’ speaks to one of the perceived dangers of virtual life, and how we are using our free time. “It demonstrates a somewhat cheeky self-awareness in the younger generations about the harmful impact of the social media that they’ve inherited.” Other shortlisted words include “dynamic pricing”, heavily used when Oasis concert tickets rocketed amid huge demand . Also featured were “romantasy”, a literary genre combining romantic fiction and fantasy, and “slop”, low-quality, inaccurate content created using artificial intelligence. Most read in The Sun Last year’s Oxford top word was “rizz” , slang for romantic or sexual appeal, which originated online.Jimmy Carter, 39th US president, Nobel winner, dies at 100

Maryam Nawaz concludes China visit with $50m investment commitmentsVictor Willis, a founding member of Village People, said the band would “seriously consider” performing “Y.M.C.A.” for President-elect Donald Trump. “If he were to ask Village People to perform the song live for him, we’d have to seriously consider it,” Willis told Fox & Friends First host Todd Piro Thursday during an appearance on the show. The singer suggested Village People will not play at Trump’s inauguration because of concern over a performance appearing as an endorsement. The band has allowed the president-elect to use “Y.M.C.A.” because of his fondness for the 1970s smash hit and issues he has faced using other songs, Willis said. “I decided to allow the president-elect’s continued use of ‘Y.M.C.A.’ because he seems to genuinely, seems to genuinely like the song,” he said. “And, you know, some of the other artists were stopping him from using their music, so I decided to contact BMI and told them not to terminate his political use license because he seemed to be bringing so much joy to the American people with his use of ‘Y.M.C.A.,” Willis continued, referring to a music licensing company. He said the song has risen to the top of the charts because Trump has “done so much” for it and “brought so much joy to so many people.” The president-elect played it at campaign rallies this election season, when he danced in a way that went viral. Willis told Piro “the dance” is “the Trump thing.” “When we do the show, we spell out the letters. But, when he does it, he just does his little move and that’s his move,” the singer said. “And, it works for him, and that’s what’s important.”
The Indian Space Research Organisation ( ISRO ) is set to launch its year-end mission, " Space Docking Experiment " (SpaDeX), on Monday at 9:58 pm from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR in Sriharikota. The mission will use PSLV-C60 . ET Year-end Special Reads What kept India's stock market investors on toes in 2024? India's car race: How far EVs went in 2024 Investing in 2025: Six wealth management trends to watch out for As per the ISRO, the primary objective of the SpaDeX mission is to develop and demonstrate the technology needed for rendezvous, docking, and undocking of two small spacecraft (SDX01, which is the Chaser, and SDX02, the Target, nominally) in a low-Earth circular orbit. "In addition, SpaDeX, because of its small size and mass, is even more challenging due to the finer precision required for the rendezvous and docking maneuvers compared to docking two large spacecraft. This mission will be a forerunner for autonomous docking needed for future lunar missions like Chandrayaan-4 without the support of GNSS from Earth," ISRO said in a statement. Like all ISRO satellites in low-Earth orbit, both the SpaDeX spacecraft carry a differential GNSS-based Satellite Positioning System (SPS), which provides PNT (Position, Navigation, and Timing) solutions for the satellites. By subtracting the carrier phase measurements from the same GNSS satellites in both Chaser and Target SPS receivers, highly accurate relative states of the two satellites are determined. The VHF/UHF transceivers in both satellites aid this process by transferring the GNSS satellite measurements from one satellite to the other. Hardware and software test beds, including closed-loop verifications, were carried out to characterise the RODP performance," the statement said. The SpaDeX spacecraft were designed and realized by the UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) with the support of other ISRO centers (VSSC, LPSC, SAC, IISU, and LEOS). The spacecraft, in its orbital phase, will be controlled from ISTRAC using ISRO ground stations and other externally hired ground stations. "The full integration and testing of the satellite were carried out at M/s Ananth Technologies, Bangalore, under the supervision of URSC. Presently, after completing all tests and clearances, the spacecraft has moved from URSC to SDSC and is undergoing preparations for launch," the statement said. Kagiso Rabada turned batting hero as he and Marco Jansen took South Africa to a dramatic two-wicket win over Pakistan on the fourth day of the first Test at SuperSport Park on Sunday. For the latest Proteas news, bookmark The South African website’s dedicated section for free-to-read content Needing 148 to win, South Africa crashed to 99 for eight against superb bowling by Mohammad Abbas. The 34-year-old Abbas took a career-best six for 54. But Rabada, so often a match-winner as a bowler, went on the attack as a batsman, hitting an unbeaten 31 off 26 balls, while Jansen provided solid support in making 16 not out. Abbas bowled unchanged for 19.3 overs – four of them on Saturday when he took his first two wickets – in a spell of unremitting accuracy on a pitch which gave seam bowlers help throughout the match. It was a remarkable comeback for Abbas, whose previous Test appearance was against the West Indies in Kingston in August 2021. But it was not quite enough for Pakistan, seeking their first win in South Africa in 18 years. Batted solidly The result ensured qualification for South Africa in the final of the World Test Championship final in England next year. Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma batted solidly at the start of the day after resuming on 27 for three. Markram and Bavuma put on 43 for the fourth wicket, with Bavuma surviving on 14 – and getting six runs – when he hooked Abbas to fine leg, where Naseem Shah stepped over the boundary in catching the ball. Markram looked secure but was bowled by Abbas for 37 by a virtually unplayable ball which kept low and seamed back off the pitch. Bavuma and David Bedingham added another 34 runs until Bavuma uncharacteristically charged down the pitch at Abbas and was given out caught behind for 40. He walked off immediately but Ultra Edge technology showed the only ‘spike’ was when the ball brushed his trouser pocket. It was the first of four wickets which fell for three runs in 12 balls. Pakistan’s Naseem Shah bowled Kyle Verreynne and Abbas had Bedingham and Corbin Bosch caught behind off successive deliveries. Rabada and Jansen saw South Africa through to lunch at 116 for eight – then polished off the match in just 5.3 overs after the interval, with each stroke cheered by the home spectators. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark raised that point before the sparsely attended title game between No. 12 Arizona State and 16th-ranked Iowa State. There were thousands of empty seats at the home of the Dallas Cowboys. Yormark says he remains committed to having a Big 12 title game. Besides the issues of fans, there have been suggestions that some leagues might be better off without title games as it relates to playoff hopes. Boise State makes the College Football Playoff as Big 12's 1st-round bye chances dim INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The first big win in college football’s postseason goes to Boise State. The have Broncos captured the Mountain West Conference title and earned their spot in the sport’s first 12-team playoff. As for the losers, there was UNLV, which fell 21-7 to Heisman hopeful Ashton Jeanty and the Broncos in the conference title game. But more than that, it was the Big 12, which saw one path to a first-round bye in those playoffs blocked off by Jeanty and Company. Lindsey Vonn competes in a pair of downhills, another step on her comeback trail at the age of 40 COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. The 40-year-old Vonn is on the comeback trail after stepping away from the sport because of injuries. Norris’ last lap put him .209 of a second faster than Piastri, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. .020 further back. Seven-time F1 champion Hamilton qualified 18th for his last race with Mercedes after a bizarre incident wrecked his final qualifying lap. A plastic pole marking the inside of a corner was knocked loose by Kevin Magnussen’s Haas and Hamilton drove over it. Everton vs. Liverpool postponed because of Storm Darragh. Ashton Jeanty lets his play do the talking for CFP-bound Boise State BOISE, Idaho (AP) — After Ashton Jeanty streaked through the middle of UNLV’s defense on his way to a 75-yard touchdown run Friday night in the Mountain West Conference title game, he didn’t strike the Heisman pose. He didn’t even lobby for it after the game, instead letting his play do the talking in No. 10 Boise State's 21-7 victory over No. 19 UNLV 21-7. Jeanty added another 209 yards — his sixth game over 200 yards this season — to push his total to 2,497 — just 132 yards short of passing Barry Sanders’ FBS season rushing record. Trump has promised again to release the last JFK files. But experts say don’t expect big revelationsThe Colorado Buffaloes are engaged in a fierce battle with the Kansas Jayhawks in Week 12, and while the team as a whole isn't playing their best football, the same can't be said for Travis Hunter. The wide receiver/cornerback hybrid has continued to star, and he sent a Heisman-themed message with his latest touchdown celebration. Hunter has been on fire on the offensive side of the ball as of late, as he had scored four touchdowns over Colorado's past three games. And against Kansas, he continued to dominate in the early going, as he hauled in six receptions for 115 yards and two more scores through the first three quarters. The second touchdown of the day brought the Buffaloes within two points of the Jayhawks, and appeared to be a potential turning point in the game. After he found the end zone, Hunter struck the Heisman pose as his touchdown celebration, sending a clear message to voters as the regular season draws to a close. TRAVIS HUNTER SCORES THE TD AND HITS THE HEISMAN 💪 @CUBuffsFootball pic.twitter.com/62fAeYYpid Hunter has emerged as the clear cut favorite to win the Heisman Trophy this season, which is awarded to the top player in all of college football. With Hunter playing a big role on both offense and defense for Colorado, it's not much of a surprise to see him leading the pack for this award right now. While Hunter does have some serious competition for the award in Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty, his latest big outing against the Jayhawks will only further strengthen his case. And this iconic touchdown celebration could end up being looked back on as the moment where Hunter unofficially won the Heisman. © Nick Tre. Smith-Imagn Images The problem for Hunter, and Colorado as a whole, though, is that his big game hasn't been enough to push them ahead of Kansas. After he scored this big touchdown, the Jayhawks responded by scoring a pair of touchdowns, pushing the score up to 37-21 early in the fourth quarter. Losing this game would be catastrophic for the Buffaloes, and Hunter will do everything in his power to not only further solidify his Heisman case, but also help his team put together a late rally in this pivotal contest.
