Musk’s motion alleges Microsoft and OpenAI are both blocking investments into xAI, his competing artificial intelligence company, and profiting from his early substantial funding and public support of OpenAI as a nonprofit. OpenAI maintains Musk sought to transform OpenAI into a for-profit company headed by Musk himself. Musk has long shared his fears about the possible danger artificial intelligence could pose to humanity, and supported OpenAI on the basis of his belief that the world’s leading AI firm should be dedicated to safety, transparency, and the public good. He has since launched xAI with the goal of surpassing OpenAI. Musk’s motion alleges OpenAI and Microsoft have violated antitrust laws, especially by allowing investment only by firms that vow to not invest in other AI companies, while profiting from technology developed when OpenAI was a Musk-bankrolled nonprofit. “Musk made absolutely clear that his donations—which established and sustained OpenAI, Inc. for years—were conditioned on Altman and [OpenAI President George] Brockman’s firm commitment to operate as a non-profit, devoted to the public good,” said the motion. The motion, filed in California, alleges Altman “approached Musk with a detailed plan to form an AI charity” and promised OpenAI would “remain a non-profit dedicated to the development and broad distribution of open and safe AI for the public benefit, not concentrated for shareholder profit.” More from this section The motion says Musk donated over $10 million to OpenAI based on Altman and Brockman’s promises. Musk’s motion says Microsoft and OpenAI now control 70% of the generative-AI market. OpenAI responded to the motion by referring to an earlier statement detailing its relationship with Musk, and said, “Elon’s fourth attempt, which again recycles the same baseless complaints, continues to be utterly without merit.” “In late 2017, we and Elon decided the next step for the mission was to create a for-profit entity,” wrote OpenAI. “Elon wanted majority equity, initial board control, and to be CEO. As science continues its evolution, discoveries and technologies can act like a master key that open doors leading to novel advancements. Artificial intelligence is one such key, making innovations possible by solving complex problems, automating tasks and enabling research that would have been impossible, or very time-consuming, without it. Mohammad Hosseini But do we want to do research on all topics, and shall we try the AI master key on every door? To explore this question, let’s consider the use of AI by genomics experts as an example. In recent years, genomics experts have added unbelievable depth to what we know about the world and ourselves. For example, genetics researchers have revealed facts about when certain animals and plants were domesticated. In another example, researchers used DNA from 30,000-year-old permafrost to create fertile samples of a plant called narrow-leafed campion. Importantly, genetic engineering has facilitated extraordinary advances in the treatment of complicated conditions, such as sickle-cell anemia. Thanks to AI, we are witnessing a dramatic increase in the pace and scalability of genomic exploration. But given the risks and possible consequences of AI use in science, should we rush headlong into using AI in all kinds of projects? One relevant example is research on Neanderthals, our closest relatives, who lived about 40,000 years ago. Neanderthals have been studied for several years now through genetic investigation of their fossils and their DNA. Genetic engineering can potentially use ancient DNA and genome editing methods to re-create a Neanderthal or aspects of a Neanderthal’s genetics and physiology. To do this, scientists could start by figuring out the DNA sequence of a Neanderthal by comparing it with the DNA of modern humans, because they are closely related. Then, scientists could use the gene-editing tool known as CRISPR to swap out parts of human DNA with Neanderthal DNA. This process would require a lot of trial and error and might not succeed soon. But based on what we know about genetics, if something is possible, AI can help make it happen faster, cheaper and with less effort. Scientists are excited about these developments because they could facilitate new discoveries and open up many research opportunities in genetic research. With or without AI, research on Neanderthals will proceed. But the extraordinary power of AI could give the final push to these discoveries and facilitate this kind of resurrection. At that point, the scientific community must develop norms and guidelines about how to treat these resurrected beings with dispositions very similar to humans. We would need to carefully consider their rights and well-being almost in the same way as when humans are involved and not as research subjects or artifacts of scientific curiosity. These ethical issues are discussed in more detail in a new paper published in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence. A more holistic question to consider is: Should we prioritize the use of resource-intensive AI, researchers’ time and public funds to resurrect extinct beings? Or should we invest these resources into conserving species that are critically endangered today to prevent biodiversity from more degradation? NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball switched a pair of series involving the Tampa Bay Rays to the first two months of the season in an attempt to avoid summer weather problems at open-air Steinbrenner Field, their temporary home following damage to Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay is scheduled to play 13 of its first 16 games at home and 47 of 59 through May 28, then play 69 of its last 103 games on the road. The Rays are home for eight of 25 games in July and eight of 26 in August. A series scheduled at the Los Angeles Angels from April 7-9 will instead be played at Tampa, Florida, from April 8-10, MLB said Monday. The second series between the teams will be played at Anaheim, California, from Aug. 4-6 instead of at St. Petersburg, Florida, from Aug. 5-7. Minnesota's first series against the Rays will be played at Steinbrenner Field from May 26-28 and the Twins' second will be at Target Field in Minneapolis from July 4-6. The Class A Tampa Tarpons, Steinbrenner Field's usual team, had six home postponements, two cancellations and four suspended games this year from June 21 through their season finale on Sept. 8. Tampa Bay is now scheduled to play its first six games at home against Colorado and Pittsburgh, go to Texas for a three-game series, then return for a 13-game homestand against the Angels, Atlanta, Boston and the New York Yankees. Tropicana Field, the Rays' home since the team started play in 1998, was heavily damaged by Hurricane Milton on Oct. 9, with most of its fabric roof shredded. Remember just a few years ago when “independent production” movies tended to be political documentaries by filmmakers like Michael Moore? Now there are many more feature films made by Christian evangelical groups than by anybody else. Or so it seems to those of us minding the general release calendars. One of the most active indie studios, maker of “The Sound of Freedom” (with a title that is a Dylan lyric quote) and the TV series “The Chosen,” is Provo Utah’s Angel Studios. Last Saturday night I found a seat in an almost full auditorium at the 13-plex to see Angel’s current film, “Homestead.” Among its stars are blue-eyed Neal O’Donough and former “Longmire” TV series cast member Bailey Chase.
