AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police say a man is in custody following a 14-hour crime spree, terrorizing multiple gas stations, firing shots and threatening workers across the city. Thirty-seven-year-old Alexander Sanabria is accused of robbing five gas stations between 11 p.m. Sunday and 1:30 p.m. Monday. Sanabria was booked on numerous charges after the violent crime spree that ended with a high-speed chase. The cases are still under investigation. Police said it all started with a shooting at a gas station on Nuckols Crossing Road in southeast Austin, at the corner of East Stassney Lane, where Sanabria is accused of firing multiple shots into the store. A store employee there recognized the gunman on social media and called police. Then, on Monday morning before 9:30 a.m., he fired a shot at a gas station on Scofield Ridge Parkway in North Austin, after he demanded a gas pump be opened for him. Just a few minutes later, Sanabria is accused of robbing gas from a gas station at gunpoint in nearby Pflugerville. Police said he also robbed cash from a gas station at the corner of Braker Lane and Research Boulevard in northwest Austin. A few hours later, Sanabria also stole cash from the QuikTrip gas station on FM 969 in East Austin. Finally, police arrested him on Monday afternoon, following multiple high-speed chases that ended with a crash that injured Sanabria. Inside the car, police found the gun used in the robberies, as well as clothing matching security footage. In a post on X on Sunday, his mother, Poornima Ramarao, said they hired a private investigator and did a second autopsy to throw light on the cause of death. The private autopsy "doesn't confirm" the cause of death stated by police, she said. Ms Ramarao also alleged that Mr Balaji's apartment - which was reportedly on the Buchanan Street - was "ransacked". "There was a sign of struggle in the bathroom and it looks like someone hit him in the bathroom based on blood spots," she said. "It's a cold-blooded murder declared by authorities as suicide. "If you believe what I believe, you have to just leave the company," Mr Balaji told the New York Times in an interview this year. The Indian-origin techie quit the company in October 2023 after spending nearly four years in the company. At OpenAI, he contributed to data collection for the company's flagship product, ChatGPT. Mr Balaji explained his concerns further on his personal website, claiming that the company's process of copying data for model training amounted to potential copyright infringement. He noted that while generative models rarely produce outputs identical to their training data, the act of replicating copyrighted material during training could violate laws if not protected under "fair use." "This is not a sustainable model for the internet ecosystem as a whole," he told the New York Times in October. OpenAI, however, disputed his claims, insisting that their data use adhered to fair use principles and legal precedents. "We build our AI models using publicly available data, in a manner protected by fair use and related principles, and supported by longstanding and widely accepted legal precedents. We view this principle as fair to creators, necessary for innovators, and critical for US competitiveness," the company said in a statement. Two of America’s greatest adversaries didn't respond with the same sentiments about the United States after Donald Trump won a second White House term. Survey findings released Monday by Morning Consult Political Intelligence indicate that adults in Russia had more positive views toward the U.S. after the former president won the election on Nov. 5. Net favorability toward America – represented by a five-day moving average of daily surveys – jumped among Russians in the aftermath of Trump’s win. Among Chinese respondents, however, opinion of the U.S. did not “appreciably” shift post-election, according to Morning Consult. The shifts – or lack thereof – from both countries aren’t wholly surprising. Trump has criticized the scale of Western aid to Ukraine amid its war with Russia and promised a swift end to the conflict if he were in charge, as he will be in a matter of months. Morning Consult notes that Russian state media has “generally portrayed a Trump administration as the better outcome for Moscow’s interests,” especially with a possible Ukraine resolution in mind. On what amounts to a shrug of the shoulders from the Chinese, meanwhile, the outlet notes that President Joe Biden’s policy toward China was largely a continuation of Trump’s, with Biden expanding tariffs placed on imported goods under his predecessor. Trump has threatened to hit China with 60% tariffs during his second term. Beyond these two U.S. rivals, favorability toward America among foreign adults in nine countries sank following Trump’s victory. Countries represented in that average from Morning Consult included Australia , Brazil , Canada , France , Germany , India , Japan , Mexico and the United Kingdom .
