Usyk retains world titles The electrifying clash between British Tyson Fury and Ukrainian heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk was watched by millions as all three judges scored the fight in Usyk’s favour by four points. Hence, Usyk retained all four WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight boxing championship belts after beating his rival in Saudi Arabia. In the closely matched contest between the pair, the judges were unanimous in the points decision, with all three scoring the fight 116-112 in Usyk’s favour. RONNIE CHANG , Martintar, Nadi Cabinet reshuffle Prime Minister is very frank in stating that he is loaded with extra work because some of the ministers’ performance are not up to par (FT25/12). Hence the need for a reshuffle. How can some ministers devote more time doing their actual duties when most of the times they are out of the country? And please don’t tell me it is important for them to attend to all the overseas meetings and conferences. We are not that gullible. Despite being assured that there will be a cut down on these junkets as promised during the election, nothing seems to have changed. On the contrary, the size of the delegation appears to have increased. I would urge the PM to also look into this and set ground rules for approving such travels in future. Let’s hope the PM will exercise his prerogative in reassigning the portfolios in a fair and transparent manner to the most capable members of his Cabinet so he is relieved from the nightmare of seeing the files in his sleep. I believe around the late 1960s major earthworks were undertaken along the Rewa River banks resulting in the flood-free status of the airport we now see. Nadi Town, being the major hub that tourists initially encounter and considering how important tourism is to Fiji, can something similar to Luvuluvu be undertaken for Nadi Town? Does he also know that Greenland is mostly ice and Iceland is mostly green? A lot of 78-year-old seniors start to get confused easily. It is always good to see that assistance is provided to people who are driven to succeed. I suspect we will see more and more of this as the election draws closer. My personal view is that people who are most successful are self-driven and motivated and do not rely on or ask for assistance. So, it would be interesting to know how these people who are being given assistance fare in a year’s time. On what basis is this assistance assessed? Is the basis on which the assistance handed out legal and based on equality and fairness? Is this type of assistance given depending on your ethnic background? On another note, what is this fixation with wrapping the boats, trucks and equipment with reels and reels of tapa cloth? I saw a report recently where even a new gravel road was adorned with tapa cloth. When did this tradition kick in? Where was the cake and the salusalu or is it the case that I will not understand because I am a vulagi? In addition, what is the fixation about ministers and assistant ministers having pictures plastered in newspapers and social media handing out this assistance. Is that to show us what a good job they are doing? They can pretend in the pictures all they want because I believe they are doing a hopeless job. Age is fast catching up and the PM has had to endure a lot in taking the People’s Coalition Government forward. I thank him for his patience and steadfastness in steering the nation forward ahead of challenges posed by the rise in crime rate, cases of drug abuse, violence and murder, littering, drop in literacy and numeracy rates and rise in cost of living. As Fijians celebrated Christmas, the PM reminded Fijians that Christmas was not just a celebration, but it was a time for peace, forgiveness and unity. As he spoke about the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, he reiterated how that humble beginning was a reminder of God’s desire to bring people closer to him. He added that Christmas allowed us to focus on healing, restoring relationships and coming together as a community. Furthermore, the PM urged Fijians to seek inspiration from the teachings of Jesus, focusing on reconciliation, unconditional love, kindness, selflessness, sacrifice, compassion, care for each other, and the ability to forgive and seek forgiveness. He concluded on a positive note, hoping that our beloved Fiji would continue to grow in the spirit of love, hope and reconciliation. I thank the PM for his service to our nation. I believe the individuals who are to be appointed had applied in accordance with the advertisement. According to the advertisement, these leadership positions are critical for ensuring the efficient delivery of municipal services, overseeing transformative projects and spearheading key reforms. It is to be noted that most of the CEO positions have been vacant for a while because of the departure and expiry of contracts of individuals who had been there. It is good to know that the positions were publicly advertised which gives everyone a fair chance and opportunity to apply. The advertisement highlighted that the ministry is seeking candidates who could drive municipal operations toward modernisation, address community needs and promote sustainable practices. The councils seeking new CEOs are: Ba, Labasa, Lami, Lautoka, Levuka, Nadi, Tavua, Rakiraki, Savusavu. As a ratepayer, I am pleased to know that this process was taking place finally. Last but not the least, we hope that only the best candidates and candidates who are appropriately experienced and qualified are selected. We have seen enough of appointments made along party lines. Googling morning radio show hosts online brings up a large variety of names, stations and sparkling personalities, but with one commonality that becomes glaringly apparent the longer one looks: Almost always, a male host is part of the program. Not so with Virgin Radio Vancouver's (94.5) Holly Conway and Nira Arora, who are among the only — if not the only — female-led morning show across Canada and potentially, far further than just our country's borders. In an age where there's an endless variety of what people choose to listen too, including satellite radio and podcasts, many still gravitate to shows like Holly and Nira for their local, quality content, and also, how they stand out from the rest. "I think technically, we are the first female-led Canadian women duo for a Top 40 radio station in Canada," Arora, who lives in South Surrey with her husband and three children, said Wednesday (Dec. 11), shortly after wrapping their 5:30 to 9:30 a.m. weekday show. She and Conway agreed the milestone also means a lot of pressure. "I think it's super cool! it's very cool ... it's very uncharted territory and it's also, a very male-dominated industry, so it feels pretty awesome! But (there's) a lot of pressure," said Conway, who lives in North Vancouver with her husband and two children. The duo keeps their listeners entertained and informed for several hours a day, five days a week, with constant contests to enter, vacation and cash giveaways, as well traffic, news, pop culture tidbits and Arora's Biz each morning. Sometimes, if the pair disagree on a topic, they'll send it to their listeners with a Five Calls Says It All segment, and listeners decide who's right, among other program features. "I think there used to be typical roles in radio for women, like the morning show guy and the sidekick," Conway noted. "Two dudes in the morning and the woman! — a lot of stereotypical roles — she does traffic, she does weather, she's the 'ha ha girl,' and I think for us, it's been really cool to do something that has never been done ... to be two women that actually big up each other and support each other and have built this crazy trust — it is such a trusting environment because there is no button. Everyone always asks, 'Is there a button that you hit? If it's not going well? Is there a delay? There's no delay — it's live." The duo became a female-led show in early 2021, when their former morning show colleague, Jonny Staub, switched careers and became a firefighter. "At the end of the day, we thought about adding someone else ... we didn't want to force it," Arora recalled. She and Conway are about much more than fun and frivolity in the mornings, however, as longtime listeners (this author included) can confirm. They focus on serious issues such as mental health, hosting therapists on their show for things like Therapy Thursdays as well as Bell Media's Let's Talk initiative, an annual event that encourages people to join the conversation on mental health. Arora and Conway also stand out by keeping it real. They share extremely personal information about their own lives on a daily basis, bringing a warmth and authenticity to the program, drawing their own experiences into their early-morning, on-air discussions. "We constantly mine our lives for information for stories, for bits we can turn into great content on the air. ... I think we bring really original content that no one else does, but you also have to be so open to talking about things," Conway said. "People say to us, 'We feel like we know you!' and I'm like, 'Well you do! I don't know you, but you definitely know us. We're very open — you have to be very open and honest, and that can be a challenge sometimes." Sharing such personal information about their lives can be tough at times, she shared. "My youngest son is on the spectrum, and that's been a new challenge for me. It's been difficult for me to talk about, but I do feel like we have an amazing platform to use for good." Arora agreed, and added having a passion for what they do — especially when it means waking up at 3:30 a.m., five days a week — also helps keep the show real and fresh. "I think the freshness also comes with me still having a passion for what I do, so that is what lights the fire inside for me ... is loving what I do and having a passion for it, and that's what keeps things fresh and not going stale." Working as closely as they have, as long as they have (since 2012), the pair have become friends in real life, they shared, with some listeners even thinking they live together (they don't). They both made a choice — of their own volition — during the COVID-19 pandemic that they have stuck to, to this day. "We've decided — every single day we take one of our breaks — every time we go on the air, it's called one of our breaks ... Every single day we take one break and we've decided to dedicate it towards social justice, some form of social justice, whether it's diversity, multiculturalism — any type of fundraising or campaigns to support those who need a voice, who don't really have a voice in the community," Arora said. "I think we're the only show — maybe ... I don't know anywhere that has made that type of commitment." As busy morning show hosts as well as mothers and wives with young children and jam-packed family life schedules, the duo admit the constant sleep deprivation, as their hours are akin to shift work, can take a toll. But they try to balance as much as they're able, often working in the local community throughout the Lower Mainland. "We love connecting with the community — we try to be out there as much as we can, because it means a lot to us," Arora said. Each pair hopes listeners take away something different from each show. "I hope they’re entertained — that we add to their day, and that they sort of feel like they’re hanging with friends in the morning," Conway said. "It’s crazy right now for everybody, and it’s a very stressful time to be doing anything, so hopefully we take away from the stress." Arora — "Learn! She wants to say learn!" Conway interjected with a grin — said she hopes listeners feel. "I hope that they — I would love to say learn — but what I really want is that every listener feels something, whether they’re happy or they get sad, whether they get angry ... I hope every person feels a feeling."

Trump threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico if they don’t stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across their borders with the United States. He said on social media last week that he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders. Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, whose responsibilities include border security, attended a dinner with Trump and Trudeau at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club on Friday. Trudeau requested the meeting in a bid to avoid the tariffs by convincing Trump that the northern border is nothing like the U.S. southern border with Mexico . “The prime minister of course spoke about the importance of protecting the Canadian economy and Canadian workers from tariffs, but we also discussed with our American friends the negative impact that those tariffs could have on their economy, on affordability in the United States as well,” LeBlanc said in Parliament. If Trump makes good on his threat to slap 25% tariffs on everything imported from Mexico and Canada, the price increases that could follow will collide with his campaign promise to give American families a break from inflation. Economists say companies would have little choice but to pass along the added costs, dramatically raising prices for food, clothing, automobiles, alcohol and other goods. The Produce Distributors Association, a Washington trade group, said last week that tariffs will raise prices for fresh fruit and vegetables and hurt U.S. farmers when the countries retaliate. Canada is already examining possible retaliatory tariffs on certain items from the U.S. should Trump follow through on the threat. On immigration, the U.S. Border Patrol reported 1.53 million encounters with migrants at the southwest border with Mexico between October 2023 and September 2024. ROME — As part of Oneida County’s efforts to upgrade the Triangle Site into an industrial zone, the city of Rome will likely get a new traffic circle next to the B-52 bomber display off of Route 825 (also known as Mohawk Drive) on the Griffiss Business and Technology Park, according to county officials. Thanks to a $23.6 million grant from FAST NY and the recent purchase of Mohawk Glen Golf Course, Oneida County and Mohawk Valley EDGE are working to upgrade the Triangle Site off Perimeter Road into a location that can sustain heavy industry. In order to make this happen, Oneida County gave a presentation to the Rome Common Council Wednesday night explaining how they need the city to rezone those areas for industry. Parts of the triangle site are currently zoned as an airfield, being adjacent to the Griffiss International Airport, while the golf course is zoned for conservation and open space, according to county officials. As part of their presentation, county officials announced that the work would require turning the intersection of Perimeter Road and Mohawk Drive into a new roundabout. EMERGENCY services remain at the scene of a bushfire that broke out at Caves Beach overnight as firefighters prepare for potentially "nasty" conditions today. Login or signup to continue reading Multiple tankers and crews from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) and Rural Fire Service (RFS) brigades responded to reports bushland was alight and flames were threatening a house just before 11pm on Boxing Day. A FRNSW spokesperson said first responders called for back-up and headed down fire trails in the bushland to get protection lines in place. The blaze had ripped through about three hectares of bushland as firefighters battled "strong" 15-knot winds. Crews managed to get the bushfire under control within about an hour, by 11.50pm, the spokesperson said. Firefighters remained at the scene overnight to patrol the fireground. It comes as FRNSW and the RFS prepare for "potentially a nasty day" on December 27 with an extreme fire danger rating and a total fire ban in place for the Hunter region. Hot, dry and windy conditions are expected across much of the state. Fire permits remain suspended; even if a landowner has a permit, no fire can be lit. An RFS spokesperson said a band of lightning was tracking with storms towards the east coast on Friday and could cause new fires. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned Newcastle could reach 40 degrees today. "The chance of a thunderstorm, possibly severe in the afternoon and evening," the forecast said. Thunder was already rolling in the city at about 9am. Anyone who sees an unattended fire should call triple zero (000).
