Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save The federal agency in charge of Green Peter Reservoir and Dam has agreed to halt the drawdown intended to give salmon species safe passage after three local cities complained that the murky water it creates is putting a strain on their drinking water filtration systems. In a letter sent to the city managers of Sweet Home, Lebanon and Albany just before 11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, Col. L. Dale Caswell Jr. of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers acknowledged that the cities have been in contact with Oregon health officials. The Army Corps also has been in touch with the Oregon Health Authority to assess the cities' complaints, and in response, Caswell wrote, has decided to halt the drawdown. People are also reading... A formal letter, dictating our decision, will be sent out next week," Caswell told the city managers. No other details about reversing the drawdown were shared. In Lebanon's recent entreaty to OHA to intervene in the drawdown, Lebanon City Manager Ron Whitlatch wrote that the operation "risks Lebanon's ability to provide safe drinking water and continues to damage our water treatment plant." Earlier Friday, Albany City Manager Peter Troedsson also sought help from the Oregon Health Authority, which ensures the quality and safety of the state's drinking water. "The city of Albany joins the cities of Lebanon and Sweet Home in requesting an immediate halt to the United States Army Corps of Engineers drawdown operations at Green Peter Reservoir. Our communities' drinking water treatment facilities are being impacted by continuous high turbidity (another word for murkiness) in the South Santiam River," Troedsson wrote. The South Santiam is typically a source of very clean water, he said. "These clean conditions mean that none of our water treatment plants were built to handle such turbid water conditions, especially for an extended period of time. The turbidity resulting from the Green Peter Reservoir drawdown puts considerable strain on our treatment plant capacity to meet demand, is causing additional operational costs, and has resulted in the loss of warranty on equipment due to exceeding design turbidity limits," Troedsson wrote. A federal judge ordered the agency to drawdown reservoirs in the Willamette Valley in response to a lawsuit filed by environmentalists who successfully argued the Army Corps has not done enough to ensure the habitat of the endangered chinook salmon and related species. Last year's drawdown at Green Peter was the first, and created green-tinged water that drew many resident complaints — and frustrated the operators at local municipal water treatment plants. In turn, local electeds put pressure on the state and federal government to reimburse them their costs of having to adjust to the suddenly murky water, created when dirt and bits of animal and plant matter become concentrated by the drawdown. By Neil Jerome Morales , Reuters Philippine security agencies stepped up safety protocols on Saturday after Vice President Sara Duterte said she would have President Ferdinand Marcos Jr assassinated if she herself were killed. In a dramatic sign of a widening rift between the two most powerful political families in the Southeast Asian nation, Duterte told an early morning press conference that she had spoken to an assassin and instructed him to kill Marcos, his wife, and the speaker of the Philippine House, if she were to be killed. "I have talked to a person. I said, if I get killed, go kill BBM (Marcos), (first lady) Liza Araneta, and (Speaker) Martin Romualdez. No joke. No joke," Duterte said in the profanity-laden briefing. "I said, do not stop until you kill them, and then he said yes." She was responding to an online commenter urging her to stay safe, saying she was in enemy territory as she was at the lower chamber of Congress overnight with her chief of staff. Duterte did not cite any alleged threat against herself. The Presidential Security Command said it had heightened and strengthened security protocols. "We are also closely coordinating with law enforcement agencies to detect, deter and defend against any and all threats to the president and the first family," it said in a statement. Police Chief Rommel Francisco Marbil said he had ordered an immediate investigation, adding that "any direct or indirect threat to his life must be addressed with the highest level of urgency". The Presidential Communications Office said any threat to the life of the president must always be taken seriously. However, Duterte told reporters on Saturday afternoon: "Thinking and talking about it is different from actually doing it," adding there was already a threat to her life. "When that happens, there will be an investigation on my death. The investigation on their deaths will be next." Political support Her strong comments probably will not dent her political support, said Jean Encinas-Franco, a political science professor at the University of the Philippines. "If anything, this type of rhetoric brings her even closer to what her father's supporters liked about him." The daughter of Marcos' predecessor as president, Duterte resigned from the Marcos cabinet in June while remaining vice president, signalling the collapse of a formidable political alliance that helped her and Marcos, son and namesake of the late authoritarian leader, to secure their 2022 electoral victories by wide margins. Speaker Romualdez, a cousin of Marcos, has slashed the vice presidential office's budget by nearly two-thirds. Duterte's outburst is the latest in a series of startling signs of the feud at the top of Philippine politics. In October, she accused Marcos of incompetence and said she had imagined cutting the president's head off. The two families are at odds over issues including foreign policy and former President Rodrigo Duterte's deadly war on drugs. In the Philippines, the vice president is elected separately from the president and has no official duties. Many vice presidents have pursued social development activities, while some have been appointed to cabinet posts. The country is gearing up for mid-term elections in May, seen as a litmus test of Marcos' popularity and a chance for him to consolidate power and groom a successor before his single six-year term ends in 2028. Past political violence in the Philippines has included the assassination of Benigno Aquino, a senator who staunchly opposed the rule the elder Marcos, as he exited his plane upon arrival home from political exile in 1983. - ReutersSarnia councillor won't apologize to mayor and staff for vulgar attacks during meeting

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings waived cornerback Akayleb Evans on Saturday in another setback for their beleaguered 2022 draft class. Evans started 15 games last season, but he had been relegated to a special teams role this year after the Vikings added veteran cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore and Shaquill Griffin. Evans was a fourth-round pick out of Missouri, one of three defensive backs among Minnesota's first five selections in 2022. Lewis Cine (first round) was waived and Andrew Booth (second round) was traded earlier this year. One of their second-round picks, guard Ed Ingram, lost his starting spot last week. Evans was let go to clear a roster spot for tight end Nick Muse, who was activated from injured reserve to play on Sunday at Chicago. The Vikings ruled tight end Josh Oliver out of the game with a sprained ankle. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has formalised Papua New Guinea's first National Rugby League (NRL) team after committing $600 million of taxpayer money towards the venture. Mr Albanese announced the partnership in Sydney on Thursday alongside PNG Prime Minister James Marape. The Australian government will support the Pacific team to join the NRL competition no later than 2028. “Rugby league is the national sport of Papua New Guinea and PNG deserves a national team,” Mr Albanese said. “The new team will belong to the people of Papua New Guinea, it will call Port Moresby home. I know it will have millions, literally, of proud fans barracking for it from day one.” The Australian Prime Minister then handed over to Mr Marape. “Thank you, my brother. The Right Honourable Anthony Albanese,” the PNG Prime Minister said. “We want to preserve our Pacific as safe and peaceful and good for all of us to live in, especially our children. “Today, the investments of time and money put into this – and for rugby league to embrace a team from Papua New Guinea – is monumental.” The investment has been hailed as a strengthening of ties between Pacific neighbours as China has sought to exert its influence in the region. The move comes as part of Australia’s ongoing strategy to foster closer ties with PNG amid rising geopolitical tensions across the region. Mr Albanese emphasised the sporting investment was not just about “80 minutes of play on the field” but also “security relationships”. Mr Albanese previously pledged $600 million over 10 years as part of a broader effort to help PNG establish itself as a competitive team within the NRL. The investment included funding for infrastructure, player development and facilities in Port Moresby. The announcement follows several major spending promises from Labor ahead of the upcoming federal election. Labor has also promised $1 billion to fund new childcare centres in regional Australia, $427 million for subsidised childcare and $16 billion to reduce student debt .

If any film has the power to change the world, it’s “Wicked.” When I saw it on stage, I thought it was an above-average show that would best be remembered for turning Gen Z-ers onto theater. And seeing young girls in the lobby dressed as princesses and witches was as uplifting as hearing “Defying Gravity.” But the movie version stirred me even more by doubling down on the show’s anti-bullying theme and the consequences of shutting out those who don’t look like us, messages that resonate more than ever. Plenty of people have already experienced the magic. It made $162.5 million in its opening weekend, setting it up to be the most successful film ever based on a Broadway production. It’s bound to be a contender during awards season. One of the reasons for its popularity is that it’s a companion piece to the beloved “The Wizard of Oz,” one in which we discover that Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West (Cynthia Erivo) isn’t all wicked and Glinda the Good Witch (Ariana Grande) isn’t all good. For others, that plot line is a major turn off. They’d rather face down flying monkeys than sit through a musical. But I urge skeptics to suffer through the sappy songs and focus on the moments that remind you of times you’ve felt like an outsider. Sandy Lor, a 29-year-old social influencer based in the Twin Cities, had never seen the musical when she attended a special preview before the Nov. 22 release. The initial draw for her was Grande and director Jon M. Chu, who previously helmed 2018′s “Crazy Rich Asians,” one of the best rom-coms of the last decade. Lor didn’t expect to get so emotional during the scene in which the green-faced Elphaba is ridiculed at a party for wearing a crooked, black hat and doing a dance that may remind you of Elaine Benes’ herky-jerky moves on “Seinfeld.” But the heart-wrenching moment turns to pure joy when she is joined on the floor by her college roommate Glinda, transforming them from bitter rivals to tight friends. “I’ve been in Elphaba’s shoes before,” said Lor, who uses the name @sandysprosium when offering fashion and lifestyle tips online. “Her walking onto the dance floor was like me walking into the lunch area in high school and not knowing where to sit because I didn’t have a clique. That scene shows that it takes just one person to be on your side to make a big change. I didn’t know a movie could move me this much.” The bond between the two future witches is a huge part of both the film and the musical. The crowd I saw it with erupted into applause when the original version’s pair, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, made unexpected screen cameos. But I had completely forgotten about the dark sub-plot in which there’s a campaign to domesticate Oz’s talking animals by caging them and slowly robbing them of their ability to speak. Chu emphasizes that story line in the film by adding some sympathetic characters, including a bear nanny who nurses Elphaba through her childhood, and a cub that grows up to be the Cowardly Lion. One of the film’s more harrowing moments is when Dr. Dillamond (voiced by Peter Dinklage) is arrested for the “crime” of being a brilliant goat. “When he’s taken away, Elphaba asks, ‘What are we going to do?”' said Dan McNeil, executive director at Peacemaker Minnesota, a Roseville-based, non-profit group committed to fighting harassment in schools. “I hope that’s a question everyone asks when they see bullying going on.” The film also has a direct correlation to debates around the world about immigration, assimilating — or rejecting — other cultures. That theme was one of the reasons Chu, whose parents were born in Taiwan and China, jumped at the chance to direct “Wicked.” ‘‘’The Wizard of Oz’ had such an influence on my own family — an immigrant family that came to America with these dreams,’’ Chu told the New York Times. ‘’We’re going through such a changing period in our culture, and this hit it so on the nose — that change is difficult, that the Yellow Brick Road may not be the path for all of us.” McNeil thinks the film might inspire conversations with friends and family during the holiday season. At the very least, it may make those already standing up against discrimination feel like they’ve got reinforcements. But can a movie, even a blockbuster, really bring us closer together? It can’t hurt. “It takes schools, political leadership, corporate leadership, but also cultural influences like movies and music,” McNeil said. “Every little bit helps.”

Rental price development in Leipzig: Sven Schwarzat gives a forecastJamahal Hill will face a fresh challenge in his upcoming return at UFC 311 in Los Angeles. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill has his next Octagon assignment almost a full year after a knockout loss to Alex Pereira . Hill was originally supposed to co-headline UFC 303 against Khalil Rountree Jr., before withdrawing due to an injury. His recovery lasted the rest of 2024, capping off a frustrating year for the former titleholder. But, Hill has a chance to bounce back and get back in the title mix, as announced on the UFC Macau broadcast on Saturday. Hill will face Jiří Procházka at UFC 311 on January 18th at the Intuit Dome, the new home of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers. Immediately after the fight announcement, Procházka broke his social media silence ahead of UFC 311. “Its a Fight, Its a joy to be alive and create the Best ourselves,” Procházka posted on Instagram. “Lets get it !!!” As of this writing, Hill hasn’t posted anything on social media hinting at the UFC 311 booking. Procházka has lost twice to Pereira over the last year, including in a short-notice rematch booking at UFC 303 following Conor McGregor’s withdrawal from the card. While this will be the first fight between Hill and Procházka in their careers, their trajectories have been linked in recent years. After Hill won Procházka’s vacated belt at UFC 283 over Glover Teixeira, he suffered an injury months later, leading to Procházka facing Pereira for the again-vacated title at UFC 295. Before the loss to Pereira at UFC 300, Hill was on a roll in the UFC light heavyweight division, earning recent TKO wins over Thiago Santos, Johnny Walker, and Jimmy Crute. He’s looking to avoid the first losing streak of his career and bounce back similar to his UFC 263 loss to Paul Craig. Meanwhile, Procházka returns to the Octagon for the first time since UFC 303, a short-notice knockout loss to Pereira. Procházka regained some momentum in a come-from-behind win against Aleksandar Rakić at UFC 300. Procházka captured the light heavyweight throne by defeating Teixeira by fifth-round submission at UFC 275. Before that, he earned brutal knockout wins over former title challengers Dominick Reyes and Volkan Oezdemir. READ MORE: ‘I’m over the halfway point’... Hill and Procházka have the opportunity to cement themselves as the next man up to potentially face the Pereira vs. Ankalaev winner. In recent months, Hill has taunted the light heavyweight champion , setting up what would be an intriguing rematch.
