PASADENA, Calif. — The Rose Bowl is the next stop on No. 1 Oregon's national championship quest. And Ohio State or Tennessee will be the Ducks' opponent in the 111th edition of the Granddaddy of Them All. Oregon (13-0) received the top seed in the first 12-team College Football Playoff on Sunday, sending the Ducks to celebrate the new year in Pasadena for the ninth time in school history as they continue to fight for their first national championship. BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — Supermarket giant Carrefour’s support for French farmers’ protests against a trade agreement between the European Union and the South American bloc Mercosur has sparked a strong reaction in Brazil, including a refusal to supply beef to Carrefour stores in Brazil. Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard announced in social media posts last week that the French company would stop buying beef from all Mercosur countries, which also include Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. Bompard wrote that he agrees with French producers' arguments that Mercosur beef is an unfair competitor due to lower production costs resulting from fewer environmental and sanitary requirements. The executive encouraged other retailers to follow suit. The army denied claims it had entered or set fire to the complex and accused Hamas of using the facility for cover. Kamal Adwan Hospital has been hit multiple times over the past three months by Israeli troops waging an offensive against Hamas fighters in surrounding neighborhoods, according to staff. The ministry said a strike on the hospital a day earlier killed five medical staff. Israel's military said it was conducting operations against Hamas infrastructure and militants in the area and had ordered people out of the hospital, but said it had not entered the complex as of Friday night. It repeated claims that Hamas militants operate inside Kamal Adwan but provided no evidence. Hospital officials have denied that. The Health Ministry said troops forced medical personnel and patients to assemble in the yard and remove their clothes. Some were led to an unknown location, while some patients were sent to the nearby Indonesian Hospital, which was knocked out of operation after an Israel raid this week. Israeli troops during raids frequently carry out mass detentions, stripping men to their underwear for questioning in what the military says is a security measure as they search for Hamas fighters. The Associated Press doesn’t have access to Kamal Adwan, but armed plainclothes members of the Hamas-led police forces have been seen in other hospitals, maintaining security but also controlling access to parts of the facilities. The Health Ministry said Israeli troops also set fires in several parts of Kamal Adwan, including the lab and surgery department. It said 25 patients and 60 health workers remained in the hospital. The staffer said some evacuated patients had been unhooked from oxygen. “There are currently patients who could die at any moment,” she said. Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, an Israeli military spokesman, denied the accusations. “While IDF troops were not in the hospital, a small fire broke out in an empty building inside the hospital that is under control,” he said Friday night. He said a preliminary investigation found “no connection” between military activity and the fire. The system also can handle more sophisticated requests in a quicker fashion, they said. The company debuted its much-ballyhooed Apple Intelligence platform last month, but it still lacks many of the features offered by other tech giants. The new voice assistant, which will eventually be added to Apple Intelligence, is dubbed “LLM Siri” by those working on it. LLMs — a building block of generative AI — gorge on massive amounts of data in order to identify patterns and answer questions. Apple has been testing the upgraded software on iPhones, iPads and Macs as a separate app, but the technology will ultimately replace the Siri interface that users rely on today. The company is planning to announce the overhaul as soon as 2025 as part of the upcoming iOS 19 and macOS 16 software updates, which are internally named Luck and Cheer, the people said. Like Apple Intelligence this fall, the new features won’t immediately be included in next year’s crop of hardware devices. Instead, Apple is currently planning to release the new Siri to consumers as early as spring 2026, about a year and a half from now. Given that Apple is still several months away from announcing the plan, the timing and features could still shift. A spokesperson for Cupertino, California-based Apple declined to comment. The revamped Siri will rely on new Apple AI models to interact more like a human and handle tasks in a way that’s closer to ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. It also will make expanded use of App Intents, which allow for more precise control of third-party apps. And the software will be able to tap into features from Apple Intelligence, such as the ability to write and summarize text. Though Apple heralded “the start of a new era” for Siri when it first unveiled its AI platform in June, the company has yet to truly overhaul the software. The upgrades that accompanied Apple Intelligence were mostly cosmetic, including a new glowing interface that shows users when they’ve triggered the assistant. There’s also an option to type commands — rather than speaking them — and the ability to better understand users. Siri will get additional tweaks in the coming months as part of iOS 18, the iPhone’s current operating system. The software will be able to draw on customer data to provide context for commands and take action using the information on a user’s screen. The iOS 18 version relies on a first-generation Apple LLM to determine if requests should use the existing Siri infrastructure or be routed to a second LLM that can handle more complex queries and tap into third-party apps. The next-generation LLM planned for iOS 19 will be a new, end-to-end system that provides more advanced, ChatGPT-like capabilities. While the company works on that new technology, it will add ChatGPT to Apple Intelligence next month. Later, Apple plans to offer additional chatbot options, such as Gemini. The idea behind the new Siri is to bring these kinds of capabilities in-house, while emphasizing user privacy. But the company could still continue to offer access to third-party AI systems that provide specialized abilities or information. In recent weeks, Apple has posted job listings that hint at its plan for a more conversational Siri. “You will join a team that is redefining computing, creating groundbreaking conversational assistant technologies for both large-scale systems and new client devices, and with the people who built the intelligent assistants,” one listing reads. Others ask for candidates with knowledge in conversational AI interfaces and underlying technologies. Apple has been looking to give Siri more conversational abilities for several years but struggled to find the right technology. Over a year ago, Apple moved the team responsible for the way Siri interacts with users from the company’s AI division to its group responsible for software interfaces. Mackey Arena continues to be a house of horrors for Maryland men’s basketball. The Terps dropped their seventh consecutive game at the home of No. 8 Purdue, which overcame a five-point deficit midway through the second half with a 26-16 outburst to emerge with a 83-78 victory Sunday afternoon in West Lafayette, Indiana. Maryland (8-2, 1-1 Big Ten) has not experienced a triumph at Mackey Arena since Jan. 10, 2015, when that squad won 69-60. Perhaps more relevantly, the team was denied its sixth straight win and lost for the first time since a 78-74 setback to then-No. 15 Marquette on Nov. 15. Freshman center Derik Queen scored a career-high 26 points for the Terps, grabbed 12 rebounds for the fourth double-double of his fledgling year, and blocked two shots. Junior point guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie compiled 18 points and four assists, and graduate student small forward Selton Miguel and sophomore shooting guard Rodney Rice each scored 13 points. Maryland owned a 62-57 lead with 8:25 to go in the second half, but the Boilermakers responded with a 10-0 run and then added a 10-5 spurt for a 10-point advantage — the only double-digit lead of the game — to pull away and keep the Terps at bay. As disheartening as the defeat was, Big Ten Network analyst and former Purdue forward Robbie Hummel came away with positive thoughts on Maryland. “I don’t care about the result today,” he said during the network’s broadcast. “Just from the eye test of the talent and seeing them up close in the last two games against Ohio State and here today, This is as tough a building in college basketball to win as anywhere. The schedule kind of lightens up before they get back into Big Ten play, but I think very highly of the Maryland Terrapins. I think Kevin Willard is going to have an opportunity for this team to really compete this year.” Meanwhile, the Boilermakers (8-2, 1-1) produced four double-figure scorers, a group led by junior point guard Braden Smith (personal-best 24 points) and junior power forward Trey Kaufman-Renn (21). They also bounced back from Thursday night’s 81-70 upset loss at Penn State and avoided their first 0-2 start in the Big Ten since the 2013-14 seasons. Here are three observations from the outcome. Hardly anyone would have faulted the precocious youngster from Baltimore for feeling a little heat in his first true road game of the season in a hostile environment like the one created by the crowd at Mackey Arena. Queen, however, continues to prove that he is no ordinary freshman. He scored 18 points in the second half, which included back-to-back 3-pointers after missing his first 11 attempts from beyond the arc in his career. Queen nearly scored as many points as his teammates did (24) in that second half. In the first half, Queen scored eight points to trail Gillespie’s and Rice’s 10 points, but he refused to cave in to the announced 14,876 in West Lafayette. After drawing a foul with 72 seconds left before halftime, he jawed with the student section behind one corner of the court, inviting a chorus of boos. Despite the reception, Queen calmly sank both free throws. In the first two Big Ten games of his career, Queen has totaled 43 points, 23 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. And it doesn’t appear that he is showing many signs of playing like he should be intimidated about playing at the Division I level. In Wednesday’s 83-59 rout of Ohio State, the Terps locked down on the Buckeyes standout junior point guard Bruce Thorton, who finished with a quiet nine points, four rebounds and two assists. The defense could not repeat that performance against the Boilermakers. Smith and Kaufman-Renn each scored 15 points in the second half. Smith, the Big Ten’s preseason Player of the Year, added a game-high 10 assists, four rebounds and two steals to his day and demonstrated that his six-point, five-assist, three-rebound outing at Penn State was perhaps more of an anomaly than a concern. The 6-foot-9, 230-pound Kaufman-Renn, who turned the ball over seven times to offset the 15 points he scored against the Nittany Lions, found success in the lane against both the 6-10, 245-pound Queen and 6-9, 230-pound senior power forward Julian Reese, who fouled out with 12:32 left in the second half. Kaufman-Renn and 6-7, 205-pound sophomore small forward Camden Heide (15 points and three rebounds) helped Purdue outscore Maryland, 42-32, in the paint – a first by any opponent against the Terps. Throw in 12 points and seven rebounds by junior shooting guard Fletcher Loyer, and the Terps failed to craft the answers that could limit the damage done by the Boilermakers’ top players. One of the team’s top storylines so far had been a growing comfort and confidence coach Kevin Willard had in going to the bench to give the starters some much-needed rest and continue to carry out the offensive and defensive strategies employed by the coaching staff. But when push came to shove against Purdue, the Terps showed how dependent they are on the starters. The first five of Queen, Gillespie, Rice, Miguel and Reese accounted for 75 of the team’s points (96.2%), 26 of its 36 rebounds (72.2%), 11 of its 15 assists (73.3%), and all four of its steals. And with the exception of Reese due to his foul trouble, the other four played at least 32 minutes each. Sophomore shooting guard DeShawn Harris-Smith had two points, two rebounds and two assists, but junior power forward Tafara Gapare finished with more turnovers (two) than points (one). In his three previous games, the Georgia Tech transfer had averaged 13.3 points and 5.7 rebounds. Considering how potent the Boilermakers were on offense, perhaps it shouldn’t be startling that Willard was forced to shorten his bench on Sunday. But Maryland would surely welcome greater contributions from its reserves to alleviate some of the pressure on the starters and convert some of these negative results into positive ones. There were posts lionizing Mangione’s physique and appearance, the ones speculating about who could play him on “Saturday Night Live,” and the ones denouncing and even threatening people at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s for spotting him and calling police. It was all too much for Pennsylvania's governor, a rising Democrat who was nearly the vice presidential nominee this year. Josh Shapiro — dealing with a case somewhere else that happened to land in his lap — decried what he saw as growing support for “vigilante justice.” The curious case of Brian Thompson and Luigi Mangione captivated and polarized a media-saturated nation. It also offers a glimpse into how, in a connected world, so many different aspects of modern American life can be surreally linked — from public violence to politics, from health care to humor (or attempts at it) . It summons a question, too: How can so many people consider someone a hero when the rules that govern American society — the laws — are treating him as the complete opposite? Luigi Mangione, a suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, on Monday at the police station in Altoona, Pa. Writings found in Mangione's possession hinted at a vague hatred of corporate greed and an expression of anger toward “parasitic” health insurance companies. Bullets recovered from the crime scene had the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose,” reflecting words used by insurance industry critics, written on them. A number of online posts combine an apparent disdain for health insurers — with no mention of the loss of life. “He took action against private health insurance corporations is what he did. he was a brave italian martyr. in this house, luigi mangione is a hero, end of story!” one anonymous person said in a post on X that has nearly 2 million views. On Monday, Shapiro took issue with comments like those. It was an extraordinary moment that he tumbled into simply because Mangione was apprehended in Pennsylvania. Shapiro's comments — pointed, impassioned and, inevitably, political — yanked the conversation unfolding on so many people's phone screens into real life. “We do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint,” the governor said. “In a civil society, we are all less safe when ideologues engage in vigilante justice.” But to hear some of his fellow citizens tell it, that's not the case at all. Like Bonnie and Clyde, John Dillinger, D.B. Cooper and other notorious names from the American past, Mangione is being cast as someone to admire. The discourse around the killing and Mangione is more than just memes. Conversations about the interconnectedness of various parts of American life are unfolding online as well. One Reddit user said he was banned for three days for supporting Kyle Rittenhouse, who was acquitted after testifying he acted in self-defense when he fatally shot two people in 2020 during protests. “Do you think people are getting banned for supporting Luigi?” the poster wondered. The comments cover a lot of ground. Well, nobody ever believed that. The first expanded playoff bracket unveiled Sunday left a presumably deserving Alabama team on the sideline in favor of an SMU squad that finished with a better record after playing a schedule that was not as difficult. It ranked undefeated Oregon first but set up a possible rematch against Ohio State, the team that came closest to beating the Ducks this year. It treated underdog Boise State like a favorite and banged-up Georgia like a world beater at No. 2. It gave Ohio State home-field advantage against Tennessee for reasons it would take a supercomputer to figure out. It gave the sport the multiweek tournament it has longed for, but also ensured there will be plenty to grouse about between now and when the trophy is handed out on Jan. 20 after what will easily be the longest college football season in history. All of it, thankfully, will be sorted out on the field starting with first-round games on campuses Dec. 20 and 21, then over three succeeding rounds that will wind their way through traditional bowl sites. Maybe Oregon coach Dan Lanning, whose undefeated Ducks are the favorite to win it all, put it best when he offered: "Winning a national championship is not supposed to be easy.” Neither, it turns out, is figuring out who should play for it. The Big Ten will lead the way with four teams in the tournament, followed by the SEC with three and the ACC with two. The lasting memory from the inaugural bracket will involve the decision that handed the ACC that second bid. Alabama of the SEC didn't play Saturday. SMU of the ACC did. The Mustangs fell behind by three touchdowns to Clemson before coming back to tie. But they ultimately lost 34-31 on a 56-yard field goal as time expired. “We were on pins and needles,” SMU coach Rhett Lashley said. “Until we saw the name ‘SMU’ up there, we were hanging on the edge. We're really, really happy and thankful to the committee for rewarding our guys for their total body of work." The Mustangs only had two losses, compared to three for the Crimson Tide. All will play in quarterfinals at bowl games on Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Clemson stole a bid and the 12th seed with its crazy win over SMU, the result that ultimately cost Alabama a spot in the field. The Tigers moved to No. 16 in the rankings, but got in as the fifth-best conference winner. The conference commissioners' idea to give conference champions preferable treatment in this first iteration of the 12-team playoff could be up for reconsideration after this season. The committee actually ranked Boise State, the Mountain West Champion, at No. 9 and Big 12 champion Arizona State at No. 12, but both get to skip the first round. Another CFP guideline: There’s no reseeding of teams after each round, which means no break for Oregon. The top-seeded Ducks will face the winner of Tennessee-Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.
