Latest employment data shows little change in tech job market, CompTIA analysis findsThe Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) Zaria is set to begin kidney transplant surgeries in 2025, aiming to provide relief to patients with kidney failure and reduce medical tourism. Prof. Ahmed Umdagas, the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Zaria. He announced that the Urology Centre of Excellence, which will deliver advanced urology services, is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2025. Related Stories Nigerians with kidney ailments face high dialysis costs as transplant exceeds N14 million US Surgeons perform the first pig to human kidney transplant “By the first quarter of 2025, ABUTH would commence kidney transplant. What was just holding us was a few infrastructure,” Umdagas said. He added that most of the required machines and equipment are already in place, and personnel have been adequately trained to deliver the services. Umdagas stated that the Urology Centre of Excellence at ABUTH would be ready by the first quarter of 2025 to deliver high-quality urology services. “By the first quarter of 2025, ABUTH will commence kidney transplants. What has been holding us back is a few infrastructure upgrades,” he said. He added, “Besides that, most of the machines and equipment required for kidney transplants are available, and our personnel have been adequately trained to provide the services.” Umdagas also revealed plans for an Amenity Wing, designed to accommodate patients from all classes. According to him, the Amenity Wing will feature a single-bedroom and a room-and-parlor option for affluent patients, emphasizing that ABUTH is committed to offering world-class services. “The Amenity Wing will have a dedicated line and a website,” Umdagas explained. “The website will showcase the profiles of doctors in the hospital. When a patient wants to see a specific professor or specialist, they will simply need to use the dedicated line or the website to book an appointment seamlessly.” Similarly, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) also disclosed that a contract has been awarded for the procurement of linear machines to enhance cancer care at the facility. Speaking on additional efforts to curb medical tourism, the CMD highlighted that ABUTH boasts a fully functional 128 Slice CT Scan machine. He explained, “If you undergo an investigation abroad requiring the 128 Slice CT Scan, it costs no less than $200, which is over N300,000. Meanwhile, ABUTH charges just N30,000 for the same service.” The CMD noted that many patients now come to ABUTH for scans, take the results abroad, and continue their treatments there. “ We also have 1.5 Tesla MRI and 0.2 Tesla MRI machines, which are advanced imaging technologies . These machines are fully functional, and the cost for such services at ABUTH is significantly lower than what is charged elsewhere in Nigeria.” , He said. He added, “We also perform lithotripsy at ABUTH, which involves breaking stones using lasers instead of surgery.” Umdagas further shared that the hospital had celebrated over five successful IVF cases in collaboration with its partners. He revealed plans to establish a dedicated unit for IVF services in future budgets, ensuring all necessary equipment is housed in one facility.
Peak U.S. Exceptionalism?Aden Holloway established career highs of 26 points and eight 3-pointers to help No. 5 Alabama roll to a 105-82 nonconference victory over South Dakota State on Sunday at Tuscaloosa, Ala. Freshman Labaron Philon had the best game of his young career with 21 points and six assists for the Crimson Tide (11-2). Mark Sears had 20 points, including 6-for-14 3-point shooting. Grant Nelson added 17 points and eight rebounds and scored the game's first eight points. Alabama coach Nate Oats has sometimes been critical of his squad's defensive effort and the second half against the Jackrabbits will provide more fuel for that concern. Alabama did connect on a season-best 19 3-point shots but also attempted 55 long-range shots (34.5 percent). The Tide also saw South Dakota State put up 49 points in the second half to keep the score relatively competitive. Alabama claimed a fifth straight win with its third 100-plus point performance of the season. South Dakota State (9-6) was led by Washington State transfer Oscar Cluff, who had 21 points and 15 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. The Jackrabbits connected on 11-for-26 3-point shooting (42.3 percent), with guard Isaac Lindsey scoring 11 points, including 3-for-6 on 3-point tries. After Nelson's personal 8-0 run to open the game, South Dakota State pulled with 16-14 on a shot by William Whorton with 11:45 to play in the opening half. But Alabama then broke the game open, going on a 24-3 run culminating in a Holloway 3-pointer to give the Tide a 40-17 edge with 7:37 left in the opening half. South Dakota State trailed 57-33 at halftime, but played a much more competitive second half offensively by connecting on 17 of 33 shots (51.5 percent). Alabama will open 2025 with a home game against No. 12 Oklahoma on Saturday. South Dakota State will host Summit Conference opponent Denver on Thursday. --Field Level MediaDon’t want green-energy jobs? We’ll take themGREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — While other teams around the NFL are seeing their injury lists grow as the season winds down, the Green Bay Packers appear to be getting healthy at just the right time. Not only is quarterback Jordan Love looking like himself after dealing with early-season left knee and groin injuries, but the rest of the roster is getting better, too. “I think every team that can realize their potential needs to be as healthy as they can be. And injuries are a part of this business,” coach Matt LaFleur said. “It is what it is in terms of the next man up, but obviously, you want the guys that are your starters to be available — especially as you get closer to the end of the year.” Love certainly has been rolling of late, completing 67.1% of his passes for 904 yards with six touchdowns and one interception (118.8 passer rating) over the past four games, owing some of his hot streak to simply being healthy again. “The name of the game is trying to stay as healthy as possible, especially late into the season,” Love said. “There’s definitely injuries that stack up and guys being out. To have everybody relatively healthy and to be able to have our top guys out there would be huge for us.” The Packers (9-4) head into their with the Seahawks (8-5) in Seattle with only one player having been unable to take part in Wednesday’s practice at all: safety Javon Bullard. LaFleur said Bullard is week-to-week with an ankle injury he suffered in the team’s . The Packers got full participation from Jaire Alexander, who has missed four of the team’s last five games with a knee injury suffered at Jacksonville on Oct. 27, and wide receiver Romeo Doubs, who has missed the last two games with a concussion he suffered against San Francisco on Nov. 24. Although Alexander had practiced on a limited basis in recent weeks, he has missed the last three games and pulled himself out of the team’s Nov. 17 win at Chicago because of his knee. Getting Alexander back to face Seahawks receivers DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba would give a major lift to the Packers’ pass defense, currently ranked 21st with 222.2 yards per game allowed. “When I was watching him, he looked like he was moving around well, and we’ll just see how it transpires throughout the course of the week,” LaFleur said. “Hopefully, he’ll be ready to roll.” LaFleur said Doubs and rookie safety Evan Williams, who left the Packers’ 34-31 loss to the Lions because of a concussion, are still in the concussion protocol. But Williams was able to practice on a limited basis. Meanwhile, tight end Luke Musgrave, who hasn’t played a snap since injuring his left ankle during a a Sept. 29 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, has been designated for return from injured reserve. Musgrave took part in practice for the first time since undergoing surgery in early October to repair a torn ligament in the ankle. He said he only did individual drill work Wednesday, making it unlikely he would be activated this week. “Just going to ease back into it, but I feel good,” Musgrave said. “Still getting the cutting back, but overall, it feels good.” ___ AP NFL:

These devices are commonly used to treat conditions like urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and sexual dysfunction, which can occur due to weakened pelvic floor muscles. The devices work by sending mild electrical impulses to the muscles, causing them to contract and gradually become stronger over time. This therapy is non-invasive and can be performed in a clinical setting or at home, offering a convenient and effective solution for people looking to regain control over their pelvic health. In addition to improving muscle strength, pelvic floor stimulation devices can also enhance neuromuscular coordination, helping users gain better awareness and control of their pelvic floor muscles. This is particularly beneficial for women after childbirth or during menopause when the pelvic floor tends to weaken. For men, these devices can help with conditions such as post-prostatectomy incontinence. The devices are generally safe and well-tolerated, although it is important to consult a healthcare provider before starting treatment to ensure it is appropriate for individual needs. Pelvic Floor Stimulation Devices Market Insights In 2023, North America held the largest share of the global pelvic floor stimulation devices market. This is primarily due to factors such as the increasing prevalence of urinary incontinence, particularly among the elderly, and neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, various initiatives by governments and nonprofit organizations are driving market growth in the region. The demand for advanced technology and a growing number of regulatory approvals are further contributing to this growth. These conditions affect millions of individuals, particularly women post-childbirth and older adults. The increasing focus on women's health , coupled with advancements in non-invasive treatments, has driven demand for pelvic floor stimulation devices, which offer a more effective and less invasive treatment compared to surgeries. The devices work by delivering electrical stimulation to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, offering relief and improving the quality of life for many patients. A key market driver is the growing aging population , particularly in regions like North America , Europe , and parts of Asia . With aging comes a higher prevalence of pelvic floor dysfunction due to muscle weakening and other health conditions. Additionally, the increasing incidence of obesity and sedentary lifestyles has exacerbated the problem, further boosting the demand for solutions like pelvic floor stimulators. Technological advancements , such as wireless and portable devices, have also enhanced user convenience, driving adoption in home healthcare settings. However, the market is not without challenges. One significant barrier is the lack of awareness and societal stigma surrounding pelvic floor disorders, which may prevent individuals from seeking treatment. Moreover, the high costs associated with certain devices and limited insurance coverage for non-invasive treatments can restrict access to these devices for some patients, particularly in developing regions. Addressing these issues will be critical for sustained market growth. Despite these hurdles, there is significant growth potential for the pelvic floor stimulation devices market. Ongoing research and development efforts are focused on improving device efficacy and user experience, and the rise of telehealth and digital health platforms could expand access to these devices. The Fijians beat Spain 19-5 in the Cup final to end their 22-HSBC SVNS tournament losing streak. “It been a long time coming,” Kolinisau told World Rugby. “I’m so happy that we’ve got the monkey off our back now.” The 39-year-old said from now he wants consistency. Kolinisau highlighted that now he wants Fiji to challenge and win more titles this season. “We’ve worked really hard this last six months. We were disappointed at the Olympics. I told the boys hard work pays off and it paid off here.” An added bonus to Fiji’s win was when utility back Filipe Sauturaga was named Player of the Final. Debutant Kavekini Tanivanuakula said it has been a learning experience. “I’m thankful to God for his guidance as I’ve reached a good place in terms of my rugby career,” the Suva soldier said. “I’ve come to learn a lot of things, which improved my game. I’m thankful to the coaches and team-mates for giving in their time and effort.” Tanivanuakula said it was dream come true for him to win the tournament in his debut. “My favourite moment of this Dubai tournament is when I held the trophy. I hope to improve the way I play in the next tournament in Cape Town, South Africa.” Tanivanuakula said the standard set by the coach and senior players was a different level. “I thank my family and friends for their support and well wishes,” he added. Newcomer George Bose acknowledged divine intervention in their win. The last time Fiji won the Dubai tournament was in 2016. “I had observed the change in the (sevens) game as the other teams have showed class and experience,” he said. “Our bond on the field was the strength behind the win in the final.” Bose said they had to improve their defence going into the final day of the competition. “We hope to further improve our defence in the Cape Town tournament. “To be in the national sevens team is a different level and we should change our mindset when we are at this level. “If we don’t change our mindset it could result a drop in standard for the national sevens team. “At this moment we want to progress further.” Feedback: ioane.asioli@fijisun.com.fjNokia Corporation Stock Exchange Release 2 December 2024 at 22:30 EET Nokia Corporation: Repurchase of own shares on 02.12.2024 Espoo, Finland – On 2 December 2024 Nokia Corporation (LEI: 549300A0JPRWG1KI7U06) has acquired its own shares (ISIN FI0009000681) as follows: * Rounded to two decimals On 22 November 2024, Nokia announced that its Board of Directors is initiating a share buyback program to offset the dilutive effect of new Nokia shares issued to the shareholders of Infinera Corporation and certain Infinera Corporation share-based incentives. Jimmy Carter, the self-effacing peanut farmer, humanitarian and former navy lieutenant who helped Canada avert a nuclear catastrophe before ascending to the highest political office in the United States, died Sunday at his home in Georgia. He was 100, making him the longest-lived U.S. president in American history. Concern for Carter’s health had become a recurring theme in recent years. He was successfully treated for brain cancer in 2015, then suffered a number of falls, including one in 2019 that resulted in a broken hip. Alarm spiked in February 2023, however, when the Carter Center — the philanthropic organization he and his wife Rosalynn founded in 1982 — announced he would enter hospice care at his modest, three-bedroom house in Plains, Ga. Rosalynn Carter, a mental health advocate whose role as presidential spouse helped to define the modern first lady, predeceased her husband in November 2023 — a death at 96 that triggered a remembrance to rival his. “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” the former president said in a statement after she died. “As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.” Conventional wisdom saw his single White House term as middling. But Carter’s altruistic work ethic, faith-filled benevolence and famous disdain for the financial trappings of high office only endeared him to generations after he left politics in 1981. “The trite phrase has been, ‘Jimmy Carter has been the best former president in the history of the United States,’” said Gordon Giffin, a former U.S. ambassador to Canada who sits on the Carter Center’s board of trustees. “That grated on him, because it distinguished his service as president from his service — and I literally mean service — as a former president.” His relentless advocacy for human rights, a term Carter popularized long before it became part of the political lexicon, included helping to build homes for the poor across the U.S. and in 14 other countries, including Canada, well into his 90s. He devoted the resources of the Carter Center to tackling Guinea worm, a parasite that afflicted an estimated 3.5 million people in the developing world in the early 1980s and is today all but eradicated, with just 13 cases reported in 2022. And he was a tireless champion of ending armed conflict and promoting democratic elections in the wake of the Cold War, with his centre monitoring 113 such votes in 39 different countries — and offering conflict-resolution expertise when democracy receded. Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, nearly a quarter-century after his seminal work on the Camp David Accords helped pave the way for a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in 1979, the first of its kind. “His presidency got sidelined in the historic evaluation too quickly, and now people are revisiting it,” Giffin said. “I think his standing in history as president will grow.” A lifelong Democrat who never officially visited Canada as president, Carter was nonetheless a pioneer of sorts when it came to Canada-U.S. relations and a close friend to the two Canadian prime ministers he served alongside. One of them, former Progressive Conservative leader Joe Clark, once called Carter a “pretty good Canadian” — a testament to the former commander-in-chief’s authenticity and centre-left politics, which always resonated north of the Canada-U.S. border. The pair were reunited in 2017 at a panel discussion in Atlanta hosted by the Canadian American Business Council, and seemed to delight in teasing the host when she described Clark as a “conservative” and Carter as a “progressive.” “I’m a Progressive Conservative — that’s very important,” Clark corrected her. Piped up Carter: “I’m a conservative progressive.” In 2012, the Carters visited Kingston, Ont., to receive an honorary degree from Queen’s University. Instead of a fancy hotel, they stayed with Arthur Milnes, a former speech writer, journalist and political scholar who’d long since become a close friend. “He became my hero, believe it or not, probably when I was about 12,” said Milnes, whose parents had come of age during the Cold War and lived in perpetual fear of the ever-present nuclear threat until Carter took over the White House in 1977. “My mother never discussed politics, with one exception — and that was when Jimmy Carter was in the White House. She’d say, ‘Art, Jimmy Carter is a good and decent man,’” Milnes recalled. “They always said, both of them, that for the first time since the 1950s, they felt safe, knowing that it was this special man from rural Georgia, Jimmy Carter, who had his finger on the proverbial button.” While Richard Nixon and Pierre Trudeau appeared to share a mutual antipathy during their shared time in office, Carter got along famously with the prime minister. Indeed, it was at the express request of the Trudeau family that Carter attended the former prime minister’s funeral in 2000, Giffin said. “The message I got back was the family would appreciate it if Jimmy Carter could come,” said Giffin, who was the U.S. envoy in Ottawa at the time. “So he did come. He was at the Trudeau funeral. And to me, that said a lot about not only the relationship he had with Trudeau, but the relationship he had in the Canada-U.S. dynamic.” It was at that funeral in Montreal that Carter — “much to my frustration,” Giffin allowed — spent more than two hours in a holding room with Cuban leader Fidel Castro, a meeting that resulted in Carter visiting Cuba in 2002, the first former president to do so. But it was long before Carter ever entered politics that he established a permanent bond with Canada — one forged in the radioactive aftermath of what might otherwise have become the country’s worst nuclear calamity. In 1952, Carter was a 28-year-old U.S. navy lieutenant, a submariner with a budding expertise in nuclear power, when he and his crew were dispatched to help control a partial meltdown at the experimental Chalk River Laboratories northwest of Ottawa. In his 2016 book “A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety,” Carter described working in teams of three, first practising on a mock-up of the reactor, then on the real thing, in short 90-second bursts to avoid absorbing more than the maximum allowable dose of radiation. “The limit on radiation absorption in the early 1950s was approximately 1,000 times higher than it is 60 years later,” he wrote. “There were a lot of jokes about the effects of radioactivity, mostly about the prospect of being sterilized, and we had to monitor our urine until all our bodies returned to the normal range.” That, Carter would later acknowledge in interviews, took him about six months. Carter and Clark were both in office during the so-called “Canadian Caper,” a top-secret operation to spirit a group of U.S. diplomats out of Iran following the fall of the U.S. embassy in Tehran in 1979. The elaborate ploy, which involved passing the group off as a Canadian science-fiction film crew, was documented in the Oscar-winning 2012 Ben Affleck film “Argo.” Carter didn’t think much of the film. “The movie that was made, ‘Argo,’ was very distorted. They hardly mentioned the Canadian role in this very heroic, courageous event,” he said during the CABC event. He described the true events of that escapade as “one of the greatest examples of a personal application of national friendship I have ever known.” To the end, Carter was an innately humble and understated man, said Giffin — a rare commodity in any world leader, much less in one from the United States. “People underestimate who Jimmy Carter is because he leads with his humanity,” he said. “I read an account the other day that said the Secret Service vehicles that are parked outside his house are worth more than the house. How many former presidents have done that?” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec, 29, 2024.
NEW YORK — Deciding whether Juan Soto tops Shohei Ohtani for baseball's largest contract could be in the eye of the beholder because of all the deferred money in Ohtani's deal. Ohtani agreed last December to a $700 million, 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, easily exceeding the previous high set when Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels struck a $426.5 million, 12-year agreement through 2030. Ohtani's deal includes $680 million in deferred money payable from 2034-43. There are several interpretations for how to value that deal in current dollars: 1. For baseball's luxury tax, the average annual value is pegged at $46.08 million using a 4.33% discount rate. 2. The players' association uses a 5% rate, which puts the value at $43.75 million per season. 3. For MLB's regular payroll, a 10% rate results in a $28.21 million per year rate. Soto could get a contract of 10-to-15 years for $600 million or more. His agent, Scott Boras, is not a big fan of deferred money and thinks teams might not insist on delaying the cash. "I think it's much less of an issue than it was before," Boras said. "Deferral as a mechanism for me, is it: Will it impede my ability to get the greatest asset I can acquire? And the answer to that is I don't think they're going to want to do anything that impedes their primary pursuit and goal." The interest figure used for discounting to determine luxury tax value is set in the collective bargaining agreement as the federal mid-term rate defined in section 1274(d) of the Internal Revenue Code for the October preceding the initial contract year. That rate dropped to 3.7% this offseason, which meant if Ohtani's deal had been agreed to this month, its annual luxury tax value would have been about $49.3 million. That would have resulted in an additional $3.5 million annual tax bill for the Dodgers, who will exceed the top threshold and would pay additional tax at a 110% rate on each dollar. MLB's regular payrolls, which use the same rate as the one for calculating the qualifying offer price based on the 125 largest contracts, use the prime rate set by J.P. Morgan Chase on the preceding Nov. 1 plus 1%, rounded to the nearest full percentage point. That figure dropped to 9% for this offseason. Deferred compensation must be funded by the second July 1 after the season in which it was earned, discounted to a present-day value at a 5% rate. Los Angeles owes deferred payments just over $1 billion due from 2028-46 to Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, Teoscar Hernández, Blake Snell and Tommy Edman. "It's just trying to kick dollars down the road," St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said at the general managers meetings last month. Ohtani's payments are two-thirds of the total owed. "It was a unique situation for where a club was, a unique situation for a player who has very significant earning potential outside of strictly his compensation from a club," New York Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said. "Those other ones are much more representative of what you see in sort of standard contracts around the industry. Each organization, each ownership group is going to have a slightly different perspective on this, on how they're calculating the returns off of that deferred compensation." Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said his team's leadership from Guggenheim Baseball Management has the expertise to fund deferred compensation wisely. "A lot of our ownership group are from financial background and can have that money going to work right now," he said. MLB proposed during collective bargaining on June 21, 2021, to put an end to the practice. "For contracts entered into after the effective date of the Basic Agreement, deferred compensation of any kind will not be permitted," the proposal read, according to a copy obtained by The Associated Press. That idea was rejected by the union and not included in the five-year agreement that expires in December 2026. New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman thinks his team's large resources encourage players to seek their money as soon as possible. "We're open to deferrals," he said. "A lot of times players are less open to doing deferrals for us than they are for maybe other markets, but if we can do stuff that benefits us, of course we will." Rachel Zegler And Jaeden Martell Explained The Millennial Pause To Kyle Mooney In A Generational Trivia ChallengeCHICAGO (WLS) -- Sammy Sosa is set to return to the Chicago Cubs' winter fan convention. Sosa and the Cubs reconciled last week , ending their 17-year estrangement after the former slugger apologized for making "mistakes" during his playing career. Minutes after the apology was released, the Cubs invited Sosa to the Cubs Convention for the first time since he retired in 2007. The 2025 Cubs Convention will take place Jan. 17-19 at the Sheraton Grand in Chicago. The Cubs officially announced Saturday that Sosa will be in attendance. Sosa, who has been linked to performance-enhancing drugs for decades, stopped short of directly admitting to PED use in a statement released December 19. But the former National League MVP said that at times throughout his playing career he "did whatever I could to recover from injuries in an effort to keep my strength up to perform over 162 games" and added, "I never broke any laws, but in hindsight, I made mistakes and I apologize." Sosa, 56, hit 609 home runs -- the ninth most in Major League Baseball history -- during an 18-year career highlighted by his 13-year stint with the Cubs. He hit at least 60 homers in three seasons over a four-year stretch from 1998 to 2001, all of which came in the heart of baseball's steroid era. Sosa is one of a group of players, including Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire, who haven't been elected to the Hall of Fame in part because of their ties to the steroid era, which occurred from about 1994 to 2004, when more stringent testing began. Sosa testified in front of Congress in 2005 and denied using PEDs, although the New York Times later reported he had tested positive in 2003. Sosa, Bonds and McGwire all fell well short of Hall of Fame election in 2022 on their 10th and final appearance on the Baseball Writers' Association of America ballot. Sosa received a high of 18.5% support in his final year, less than a quarter of the 75% needed. His next chance for consideration would be if he were put on the ballot for the contemporary player committee, which meets next December. Cubs ownership hinted at the need for an apology from Sosa before welcoming him back to the organization or even inviting him to an offseason team function. "We appreciate Sammy releasing his statement and for reaching out," Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said in a statement Dec. 19. "No one played harder or wanted to win more. Nobody's perfect but we never doubted his passion for the game and the Cubs. It is an understatement to say that Sammy is a fan favorite. We plan on inviting him to the 2025 Cubs Convention and, while it is short notice, we hope that he can attend. We are all ready to move forward together." Sosa's 545 home runs in a Cubs uniform is the most in franchise history. "We can't change the past, but the future is bright," Sosa said in his statement. "In my heart, I've always been a Cub and I can't wait to see Cubs fans again." ESPN contributed to this report.
