It also recently inaugurated a newly completed Centre for Leadership, Innovation, and Prosperity (CLIP). BY TIMES REPORTERIt's the most wonderful time of the year! It's the time of year when you rekindle past friendships, visit with family, and look forward to putting together your seventh mock draft in three days as the Chicago Bears have been out of the playoff picture since Halloween. Another year, another disappointing season for the Bears' faithful. The team continues to reel and limp toward the conclusion of the season despite Caleb Williams being on the cusp of breaking franchise records held by Erik Kramer. It's fitting that as we air our grievances towards this team in Festivus fashion, the franchise passing yards leader shares his namesake with the cooky next-door neighbor to Jerry Seinfeld. So, I wanted to ask my brethren at On Tap Sports what their Christmas wish would be if given their druthers and afforded one wish granted by St. Nick himself. No constraints. No holds barred. Let's fix the Bears on Christmas – a Christmas miracle if you will, and this team could be poised to win its first playoff game under the leadership of George McCaskey. Seth Conklin : Give me the Lions' offensive line It would be simple and practical, and would fix an issue that Ryan Poles has not been able to remedy in his three years as the Bears' General Manager. It's equal parts infuriating and awe-inspiring to watch the Detroit Lions pick up five yards any time they elect to run behind future Hall-of-Fame right tackle Penei Sewell. When Brad Holmes was brought into Detroit alongside Dan Campbell, their focus on fixing the offensive line was a crucial mission from the jump. The Lions had a solid bulwark to work with prior to Campbell's arrival, with left tackle Taylor Decker and center Frank Ragnow being budding stars but not fully developed. When Holmes and Campbell drafted Penei Sewell in 2021 and signed guard Kevin Zeitler this offseason, their line propelled to tops in the league. It's been a methodical construction for the Lions' line, one that is constantly being supplemented both in free agency and through the draft. Resources are consistently poured into their line, and it's been a key component to Jared Goff's career resurrection. So, Santa, whaddya say? Can you deliver five 300+ pounders down the chimney and into Halas Hall? Samir Patel : George sells the team! It's no surprise that the fish rots from the head, and the McCaskeys have represented a stinky fish since their takeover. George McCaskey seems like a nice guy, a real humanitarian who enjoys cozying up with the fanbase and saying all the right things. But, like Buster Bluth, he's not much of an intellect when it comes to the football side of his football team . The Washington Commanders are a great example of what happens when competent ownership ousts a league pariah. Josh Harris, who also owns the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils, purchased the Commanders last season and wasted no time in supplementing his front office with viable football people to run his football team. Adam Peters was brought over from the San Francisco 49ers, and Dan Quinn was hired to oversee a rebuild in the nation's capital. The result? The Commanders are a surprising 10-5, their first 10-win season since 2012. Ownership isn't some boogeyman, but the Bears' brass does favor nepotism and cronyism over any semblance of a meritocracy. Kevin Warren continues to be a wild card in that regard, but until there's tangible evidence that things are going to be different, then the fanbase can only do what our own Samir did: write a letter to the North Pole and beg for a change. Q: "I wish Jeffrey Lurie owned the team and brought Howie Roseman with him." It really is sickening to watch another storied franchise continue to make all the right moves while simultaneously having a fanbase that pelts Santa with AA batteries. The Philadelphia Eagles have been a poster child for sustained success; after winning a Super Bowl with Nick Foles and Doug Pederson in 2017, Roseman moved on after a few rough seasons from each and reached another Super Bowl with Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts. The Eagles, like the Lions, continue to inject talent into each of their lines. Their offensive line hasn't skipped a beat since All-World center Jason Kelce retired with the Eagles drafting Cam Jurgens back in 2022 as the heir-apparent. Roseman has been with the Eagles since 2000 and has been their general manager since 2010. In those 24+ years with the organization, the Eagles have rarely had any depth issues with any of their lines. Whether it was players like Jason Peters and Jon Runyan, Lane Johnson and Brandon Brooks, or Jordan Mailata and Cam Jurgens, the Eagles have had a solid, talented front-five to block for their quarterbacks. It is a straightforward team-building strategy that the Bears can't grapple with. From Jerry Angelo to Ryan Poles, the Bears seem almost to hold their nose when it comes to drafting hog mollies, and it shouldn't be a surprise that it's cost the team when it comes to developing their past three quarterbacks. Ron Luce: " All I want for Christmas is for the Bears to go to another city so they can't torture me anymore..." Bears fans are a special breed of masochists; we tune in to watch this team disappoint us weekly, and we do so during the holiday season. That said, since Kevin Warren can't find a place to build the new stadium after two years of aimless meandering the greater Chicago area, Ron may actually get his wish. There's an air of quiet apathy from the Chicago faithful this year. Soldier Field was reverberating with Jared Goff chants this past Sunday, and a once passionate fanbase seems almost resigned to each year of continued disappointment. As for myself, if I could ask Santa for one thing for the Bears, it'd be world peace. Just kidding, screw that. Give me Ozzie Newsome to replace Kevin Warren as team president. Newsome is what everyone is hoping Kevin Warren can become: a football lifer with a multitude of contacts. However, where they're different is that Newsome has experience building a Super Bowl-winning roster (twice) and a keen business sense to keep the Ravens both cap-healthy and flush with draft capital. So, Santa, if you're listening and have some extra room in your sack, a few of us have just some minor requests for our beloved Bears. After all, it'll take a Christmas miracle to fix the cycle of depression that's plagued this organization since its Super Bowl win almost forty years ago. Macau is regarded by China as a shining example of its "One Country, Two Systems" model, and Xi praised the city as a "pearl in the nation's palm" at the start of his three-day visit. The Chinese casino hub has grown from a Portuguese trading outpost to the world's casino capital by gaming revenue and a popular destination for Chinese tourists. When Macau reverted to Chinese rule on December 20, 1999, Beijing promised that the city's "capitalist system and way of life shall remain unchanged for 50 years". Arriving in the city on Wednesday, Xi lauded Macau's "world-recognised success" in implementing the "One Country, Two Systems" framework and said the city had a bright future. "Macau is a pearl in the nation's palm, and I have always kept in my thoughts its development and the welfare of all its people," Xi said. The Chinese president added that he would use his trip for "extensive and in-depth exchanges with our friends from all places, and discuss plans for Macau's development". Friday's festivities will be centred around the inauguration of Sam Hou-fai, the former president of Macau's apex court, as the city's fourth post-handover leader, replacing Ho Iat-seng. Security was tight around the city on Thursday, with roadblocks set up around an event venue and authorities increasing checks on inbound visitors. Following the end of 442 years of Portuguese rule, Macau's fortunes have risen in lockstep with China's economic growth. It is the only place in China where casino gambling is permitted and has long surpassed Las Vegas as the world's top casino hub, fuelled by two decades of Chinese visitor spending. Macau, which has a resident population of 687,000, saw just over 29 million visitor arrivals in the first 10 months of the year. Its GDP has soared from $6.4 billion in 1999 to more than $47 billion last year, and its population is the richest in China on a per capita basis. Under orders from Beijing to diversify the economy, Macau leaders have proposed fields such as financial services, technology and Chinese medicine as new economic drivers. But as of November, gaming-related taxes still made up 81 percent of government revenue and experts say Macau is years away from weaning itself off casino wealth. Xi on Thursday visited the Macau University of Science and Technology and was "briefed on the development of two state-level key laboratories" that involved Chinese medicine and planetary science, according to state news agency Xinhua. He also visited the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone on Hengqin Island, speaking to residents and people there in charge of planning, construction, management and services, Xinhua reported. Hengqin Island, a landmass adjacent to Macau and three times its size, was partly leased by Beijing to Macau to boost its land supply for non-gaming development. hol/oho/sco

Man arraigned on murder charges in NYC subway death fanned flames with a shirt, prosecutors say
In his first campaign ad this year, President Joe Biden asked a question over images of Martin Luther King Jr. and January 6 rioters: “What will we do to maintain our democracy? History’s watching.” For a few more weeks, Biden retains the responsibilities and powers of the nation’s highest office. If he believes his words, he must take urgent action to strengthen our democracy, even as he works to ensure a peaceful transfer of power. President-elect Donald Trump has made little secret of his desire for unchecked power, whether to be a dictator on day one, weaponize the Department of Justice against perceived enemies or strip broadcast licenses from disfavored media outlets. But this has yet to come to pass. America only has one president at a time. If Biden’s campaign ad was more than political bluster — and his lifetime of dedicated public service suggests it was heartfelt — he must now do everything he can to safeguard our fundamental rights. So what can he do? First, he can shore up protections for the dedicated career civil servants who keep us safe. Doctors, scientists and bank inspectors ensure the prescribed drugs are safe, our water is free of toxins, our jobs won’t cause us injury and our life’s savings won’t disappear when we make a deposit. Civil servants in agencies such as the FBI, CIA and Defense Department keep us safe from terrorists and foreign adversaries. With his billionaire Cabinet picks and quid-pro-quo style, Trump will replace servants of the people with those who serve him. He doesn’t want career civil servants to blow the whistle when his actions sacrifice Americans’ safety and well-being to benefit his wealthy friends. Solidifying job protections for civil servants gives them what authoritarians hate most: the ability to stand up, speak truth and ensure our laws are followed. Biden says he’s the most labor-friendly president in a generation. Now he must aggressively side with public workers in contract negotiations and offer whistleblower training to put our health and safety over the interests of billionaires. Second, Biden can recognize the Equal Rights Amendment to protect women. Many in Trump’s orbit are pushing him to use draconian measures to block Americans’ access to reproductive care. His nominee for defense secretary has said he believes women are less effective fighters and shouldn’t serve in ground combat units. Trump also could scale back efforts to combat sex discrimination in the workplace and health care. The ERA could offer vital constitutional protections. Virginia ratified it in 2020 and was the last state needed to bring it into force, but it has yet to be formally recognized as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution. This is the case even as the nation’s leading scholars and the American Bar Association argue it has already been adopted. Biden has the power to clarify this once and for all. Finally, Biden should do all he can to prepare our military, law enforcement and intelligence communities to uphold the rule of law and push back against attempts to weaponize them against law-abiding citizens. The Republican-led House of Representatives has passed two bills to safeguard journalists and stop the government from purchasing Americans’ private location, web history and search data without a warrant. Biden must press the Senate to take immediate action on these bills. Through training and guidance, he also can reiterate that presidential immunity does not shield military and law enforcement officers from the legal requirement to follow only lawful orders. Additionally, his administration can lay out constraints on the domestic deployment of federal forces, even if they are ultimately reversed. Biden’s term isn’t over, nor is his responsibility to the children and grandchildren watching him, waiting to see what kind of America they will inherit. Urgent actions are sitting on the most powerful desk in America. We must now ask the lifelong statesman and patriot who sits behind it: What will you do to protect our democracy? Over the past two days, President-elect Donald Trump has made clear that he has designs for American territorial expansion, declaring that the United States has both security concerns and commercial interests that can best be addressed by bringing the Panama Canal and Greenland under American control or outright ownership. Trump’s tone has had none of the trolling jocularity that surrounded his repeated suggestions in recent weeks that Canada should become America’s “51st state,” including his social media references to the country’s beleaguered prime minister as “Governor Justin Trudeau.” Instead, while naming a new ambassador to Denmark — which controls Greenland’s foreign and defense affairs — Trump made clear on Sunday that his first-term offer to buy the landmass could, in the coming term, become a deal the Danes cannot refuse. He appears to covet Greenland both for its strategic location at a time when the melting of Arctic ice is opening new commercial and naval competition and for its reserves of rare earth minerals needed for advanced technology. “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World,” Trump wrote on social media, “the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.” On Saturday evening, he had accused Panama of price-gouging American ships traversing the canal, and suggested that unless that changed, he would abandon the Jimmy Carter-era treaty that returned all control of the canal zone to Panama. “The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous,” he wrote, just before an increase in the charges scheduled for Jan. 1. “This complete ‘rip-off’ of our country will immediately stop.” He went on to express worry that the canal could fall into the “wrong hands,” an apparent reference to China, the second-largest user of the canal. A Hong Kong-based firm controls two ports near the canal, but China has no control over the canal itself. Not surprisingly, the government of Greenland immediately rejected Trump’s demands, as it did in 2019, when he first floated the idea. “Greenland is ours,” Prime Minister Mute B. Egede said in a statement. “We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.” The Danish prime minister’s office was more circumspect, writing in a statement that the government was “looking forward to working with the new administration” and offering no further comment on Trump’s remarks. After Trump brought up the Panama Canal again in a speech on Sunday, Panama’s president, José Raúl Mulino, said in a video that “every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent zones is part of Panama, and it will continue to be.” He added: “Our country’s sovereignty and independence are not negotiable.” But the president-elect’s statements — and the not-so-subtle threats behind them — were another reminder that his version of “America First” is not an isolationist creed. His aggressive interpretation of the phrase evokes the expansionism, or colonialism, of President Theodore Roosevelt, who cemented control of the Philippines after the Spanish-American War. And it reflects the instincts of a real estate developer who suddenly has the power of the world’s largest military to back up his negotiating strategy. Trump has often suggested that he does not always see the sovereignty of other nations’ borders as sacrosanct. When Russia invaded Ukraine, his first response was not a condemnation of the blatant land grab, but rather the observation that President Vladimir Putin’s move was an act of “genius.” Even now, as Trump seeks a deal to end the war in Ukraine, he has never said that the country’s borders must be restored, a key demand of the United States and NATO — he has only promised a “deal” to end the fighting. In the cases of Greenland and Panama, both commercial and national security interests are at play. Trump’s desire for Greenland was made explicit in the first term, when a wealthy New York friend of his, Ronald S. Lauder, the New York cosmetics heir, put the idea in his head. In the Trump White House in 2019, the National Security Council was suddenly delving into the details of how the United States would pull off a land acquisition of that size. Trump kept pressing the point with Denmark, which consistently rebuffed him. Trump was not the first president to make the case: Harry S. Truman wanted to buy Greenland after World War II, as part of a Cold War strategy for boxing out Soviet forces. Trump can make a parallel argument, especially as Russia, China and the United States jockey for control of Arctic routes for commercial shipping and naval assets. Arctic experts did not dismiss Trump’s Greenland bid as a joke. “Not that many people are laughing about it now,” said Marc Jacobsen, an associate professor at the Royal Danish Defense College in Denmark who focuses on Arctic security. Jacobsen noted that the reaction in Denmark to Trump’s latest bid had been one of fury (one Danish politician called it “an unusually strange way to be an ally”). But, he said, Greenlanders — who have long sought independence — may seek to use Trump’s interest as an opportunity to further strengthen economic ties with the United States. Since 2009, Greenland has had the right to declare its independence, but the vast territory of about 56,000 people is still heavily dependent on Denmark and has never chosen to pursue that path. Trump’s interest could give Greenland an opening for more U.S. investments, including in tourism or rare earth mining, he said. “Was it crazy when the U.S. acquired Alaska? Was it crazy when the U.S. built the Panama Canal?” asked Sherri Goodman, a former Pentagon official and a senior fellow with the Wilson Center Polar Institute, a Washington-based think tank. Goodman, whose book “Threat Multiplier: Climate, Military Leadership, and the Fight for Global Security” centers in part on the Arctic, said the United States did have a strong interest in ensuring that China in particular does not develop a strong presence in Greenland. China’s ambitions in the Arctic have grown, and in 2018 it laid out plans to build infrastructure and develop shipping lanes opened by climate change. Goodman said the United States should continue to prevent China from gaining a foothold in the doorstep to North America, but said Greenlanders must decide their own fate. “We want to have all those territories proximate to our own mainland territory to protect us and also to prevent an adversary from using it to our strategic disadvantage,” Goodman said. “On the other hand, there is international law and international order and sovereignty, and Greenland is still a part of Denmark.” When it comes to Panama, Trump may also hold a distant personal grudge. In 2018, Panamanian police officers ousted the Trump Organization from the Trump International Hotel in Panama City after a protracted legal battle between the president-elect’s family and the majority owner of the property. The Trump name subsequently came down. The company had held a contract to manage the property. David L. Goldwyn, who served at the State Department under Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, noted that Greenland has tremendous undeveloped natural resources, including more than 43 of the 50 so-called critical rare earth elements used to make electric vehicles, wind turbines and other clean technology. “Certainly if Greenland chose to develop these resources, it would provide a significant alternative to China, although it is China’s capacity to process those minerals which gives it its current advantage,” he said. But Goldwyn said that in addition to Denmark’s sovereignty, Trump might find that Greenland’s Indigenous communities do not want mining and resource extraction as much as he does. “It is highly unlikely resource extraction could be forced on an unwilling population,” he said. “A more fruitful path might be to collaborate with the Danish government and Greenland’s population on ways to safely and sustainably develop those resources.” This article originally appeared in The New York Times . © 2024 The New York Times Company
