WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump on Sunday pushed Russian leader Vladimir Putin to act to reach an immediate ceasefire with Ukraine, describing it as part of his active efforts as president-elect to end the war despite being weeks from taking office. “Zelensky and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness," Trump wrote on social media, referring to Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In a television interview that aired Sunday, Trump also said he would be open to reducing military aid to Ukraine and pulling the United States out of NATO . Those are two threats that have alarmed Ukraine, NATO allies and many in the U.S. national security community. Asked on NBC's “Meet the Press” if he were actively working to end the nearly 3-year-old Ukraine war, Trump said, “I am.” He refused to say if he had spoken to Putin since winning the election in November. “I don’t want to say anything about that, because I don’t want to do anything that could impede the negotiation,” Trump said. Superintendent Andy Johnson has been in his current position for three years. He believes Unit 40 performed “very well” on the science assessments; they were 63% proficient. However, he’d like to see the district do better in math, where 26.3% of students are proficient, and believes they did “okay” in English-Language Arts (ELA), where 38.2% of students met or exceeded the benchmark. “I think we do a lot well. I’m extremely pleased with the sense of importance of a child’s life, meeting every aspect of their life. I think from a social-emotional standpoint, we really take the heart, the importance of making sure that every child feels valued and appreciated,” said Johnson. “I think that goes a long way leading into the academic side and athletic side and extracurricular side.” The schools are also currently working on offering more programs than they currently do, especially for those who haven’t found one they’re passionate about. One way the district is doing this is by sending out exploration surveys to local businesses in the community. “They can offer up some suggestions and things that maybe we, as a school district, should consider offering opportunities for our kiddos for them to grow in different areas that those businesses might need,” said Johnson. When asked about the current chronic absenteeism rate of 18.5%, Johnson explained how the high school is always looking for ways to emphasize the importance of coming to school. He mentioned how the number jumped during the Covid-19 pandemic, but since 2022, it’s been decreasing. In 2022, chronic absenteeism was at 22.9%. In 2023, it dropped to 18.9%. “Whatever we’re doing is trending back in the direction of lessening that chronic absenteeism,” said Johnson. “From my standpoint as a superintendent, the biggest thing that you can do to try to encourage kiddos to come to school is [to] create a... culturally inviting environment, [so] that they want to be here.” According to the Report Card, the four-year high school graduation rate sits at 85.1%. The Giants were embarrassed in Sunday's 30-7 loss , taunted by Mayfield after a touchdown run just before halftime. And then they saw their fans walk out on them again when the Bucs extended their lead to 30-0 and sent New York (2-9) to its sixth straight loss. The losing streak is the longest for the Giants since 2019, when they dropped a franchise-record nine straight games to finish 4-12. That led to the firing of coach Pat Shurmur after two seasons. Third-year coach Brian Daboll is clearly in trouble, with the Giants guaranteed a second straight losing season. They were 6-11 in a 2023 season that featured a lot of injuries. Daboll, who denies he has lost the team, isn't the only one whose job is in jeopardy. General manager Joe Schoen is on the hot seat and so is this entire franchise, which is celebrating its 100th year. It's one thing to lose. It's quite another to give up, and that's what the organization did when it decided to bench Daniel Jones a week ago and then release him on Friday after the 27-year-old asked co-owner John Mara to let him walk away. The top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee warned Friday that President-elect Donald Trump is planning to "steal from the programs and services that affect middle-class, working, and vulnerable families" by refusing to spend money appropriated by Congress. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) said in a statement that Trump's strategy, known as "impoundment," is "uninformed and unconstitutional," adding that "the Supreme Court , the Department of Justice, and the Government Accountability Office are all in agreement — the Constitution provides no impoundment power to the president to unilaterally withhold funds appropriated by Congress." "It is the sworn duty of the president of the United States to faithfully execute the law," DeLauro added, "and appropriations laws are no exception." In a new fact sheet , Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee note that "the Constitution gives Congress the power of the purse, and nowhere does it give the president any unilateral power to either temporarily or permanently impound — steal, withhold, or prevent from being spent — funds appropriated by Congress." The Alameda County Registrar of Voters manually recounted all of the race’s ballots by Friday afternoon and the results appeared to hold the same, an official said Friday. Tim DuPuis, the Alameda County registrar, said Friday that he personally made the decision to review the race’s results because it was within 10 votes of separation – the closest race in the county. The results of the recount appeared to hold, Dupuis said Friday. The only other tight race in the county, he added, was the Fremont District 6 council race where Raymond Liu had a 36-vote lead over incumbent Teresa Cox. At one point, the contest had been as close as 12 votes before more ballots were counted.Dupuis said he did not elect to recount that race. I’m glad the ROV is doing a manual count and I hope that I remain in the lead,” Arteaga said in a statement Friday before the recount was completed. “Either way the voters have spoken and we will have new leadership on the council beginning in December.” The latest campaign finance records show Arteaga raised $14,902 through October, mostly through small donations, including a $2,500 personal loan. She spent $5,820, largely on print ads and other campaign advertising materials. “It seems like what people really want to see is that they’re safe, that their families are safe, and that we’re responsible,” Del Catancio said in an interview Friday. “I feel like I’d fit in wholeheartedly because I really love Newark, I’m a long term resident here and I also work in the area.” Del Catancio received a law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law and a master’s degree in administration from the University of Kansas. She is currently a Newark planning commissioner and educator in the Newark Unified School District. “Win or lose, I feel like we put our heart and soul into it and we tried the best that we could. And so I think that it’s really up to the people,” Del Catancio added. “The fact is that in any race, you set out, you try your hardest, you meet the people and they make a decision. Aurangzeb expresses intention to shut down Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation, create alternative mechanism for maintaining strategic reserves Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb on Sunday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting export-led growth, identifying agriculture and information technology (IT) as twin sectors to drive Pakistan’s sustainable economic growth. Speaking to farmers and stakeholders in Kamalia (Toba Tek Singh), Aurangzeb emphasised that agriculture and IT were crucial to Pakistan’s economic future. “We are very clear, agriculture and IT have to lead this country as we move forward,” he said. Aurangzeb optimistic about economic trajectory amid positive indicators He said that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme was focused on stabilisation. “If agriculture and IT face difficulties, it will be because of us, so we should find solution and promote these sectors for sustainable economic development.” Aurangzeb expressed concern that despite numerous research institutions working to develop the agriculture sector, they could not produce desired results in promoting crop yields. He noted that a significant portion of finances (80%) go towards salaries, leaving only 20% for research work, which he said should have been otherwise. The minister stated that the government successfully achieved macroeconomic stability, a crucial foundation for GDP growth. “Building on this achievement, Pakistan’s economy is poised to transition towards sustainable growth from 2025 onwards. “Notably, this claim of economic stability isn’t just a government assertion, but has also been corroborated by independent sources, lending credibility to the country’s economic progress,” he added. Highlighted achievements he said that the government was successful in ensuring macroeconomic stability, reducing inflation to a single digit , and decreasing interest rates . He also mentioned an increase in consumption of cement and fertiliser, as well as a 58% surge in auto-sales, as indicators of the government’s prudent policies. Aurangzeb reiterated the government’s commitment to bringing reforms in taxation, energy, and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) sectors, and emphasised the need to improve Pakistan’s tax-to-GDP ratio, which currently stands at 9-10%, and aims to increase it to 13.5%. The minister also announced plans to simplify the taxation process, ensure digitisation, and reduce human intervention. On energy, Aurangzeb expressed hope that energy tariffs would come down, and efforts were underway to check leakages in DISCOS by bringing reforms with private sector engagement, the finance minister informed. He reiterated that the government’s role was to ensure regulations, while the private sector should lead the economy. The minister expressed intention to shut down Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (Passco) and create an alternative mechanism for maintaining strategic reserves, may be in private sector. He also questioned the effectiveness the Higher Education Commission. Aurangzeb assured farmers and stakeholders of his full support in addressing their grievances, emphasising the government’s commitment to serving the people of Pakistan.
